I was never a big fan of his, as he always scored against my team (Boro) and kept my hero Johnny Hendrie out of the Scotland squad, but by god he reminded me of why football was so much better 20 years ago. If footballers today had 1% of his the self respect, respect for his supporters and pride for his profession John has it would be a much better sport. Bolton fans have a true legend there.

I remember seeing him when I was a lad watching millwall and he scared a couple and I remember thinking he's good. Then that same season he scores against us when he went to Bolton. We turned pretty quickly on him as you do. Definitely a loss losing him but then again we did have some good goal scorers at that time in Alex rea and so on.

What a genuine and lovely guy. A true Bolton legend. I'm a die hard Blackburn Rovers fan but I used to go and watch the odd Bolton game in the 90's with my Bolton pal on the Burnden Terrace. By eck it was lively on there. Great memories. I bet Super John will be at Wembley for the final. Good luck , hopefully see you lot at Ewood next season.

Still a legend in Bolton. Really enjoyed this podcast as I was a season ticket holder at Burnden in the years he played there and they were great years. Sad to hear it wasn't paid what he was worth by the club BUT as fans.. we treated him like the legend he is! Super John McGinlay!

Bolton legend, they said it themselves he's a dying breed, probably a dead breed in football tbh, not having an agent was probably a bad thing for him, he deserved to be treated like a king at Bolton, by the board at the club, he was treated like a king by the fans but the people behind the scenes took advantage of his good nature and loyalty, can't believe he turned down Celtic to stay there, massive respect for him, one of Footballs good guys is John.

I've been a life long Bolton fan and John is in my top 3 all time favourite players. I had a season ticket throughout his time at the club and travelled all over the country watching the whites. Bit surprised his partnership with Andy Walker wasn't mentioned and he didn't say that initially it was Roy McFarland took over from Bruce, not just Colin Todd. Audio quality was a bit low but very enjoyable watch, with lots of things I didn't know.

Good shout James. Brown & Parkin's football knowledge is unbelievably bad. Brown the tit will be one of those that talks about football as if it never existed before 92 and the Premier League. It kills Sky Sports that Sheffield United and Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier league goal. As soon as he came out with that I went straight to the comments and thought "Please someone correct him. Someone mention Brian Deane and Sheffield United. Good man👍

I saw Big John play in one of his first few games for Bradford City at Maine Road, weirdly enough, exactly 24 years ago today in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. You could tell he was a Bolton legend, because there was about a dozen Bolton fans in their Bolton shirts in with the away fans, in that odd temporary (it felt temporary anyway) stand at Maine Road made out of scaffolding. The Bolton fans obviously only turned out just to support John. You wouldn't get many fans these days going to a game to support an ex player, no matter who they were or who they played for I don't think. Shame it didn't work out for him at Bradford City, I know the fans really wanted him to do well. But by the season after, Paul Jewell had replaced Kammy, we'd signed the likes of Lee Mills and Robbie Blake up front and we were Premiership bound.

Rioch never asked Wright to play like McGinlay. What he did want to get across to Wright was how to work wiser in wide positions, something Mcginlay excelled at and Rioch thought Wright could improve there. The silence of the Arsenal players, or at least their acceptance of this version as true, wrongs Rioch immensely That said, Rioch shouldve stayed at Bolton , his Bolton stint is now seen with rose tinted spectacles but its worth remembering he left Bolton when they needed him most and is not the faultless semi god he is made out to be. Good memories, proper players from the last proper era.

Super John. Legend before I watched this but even more so now. Humble, Modest, Loyal and out of the same mould as Nat Lofthouse. This for me just showed the difference between the modern day footballer and the old school pre Bosman and pre Premier League. One John was only interested in football whilst listen to that big numpty Parkin and you get the impression all he cares about is £$£££. Not only that he was a pretty crap forward and his performances in front of the camera are equally embarrsaing.
