It's amazing to see Professor Mearsheimer to have debates with Chinese intellectuals about US-China competition.

Professor Mearsheimer was on point that whatever China does defensively will be viewed by America as offensive, and vice versa. This is called the "security dilemma" that spirals into an arms race.

@@yanidilag8407 That’s why you have arms treaties, which the US have very tragically torn up. Doesn’t bode well for the future of mankind.

Whether china can rise peacefully depends on whether US would want one. How many wars has china been in the path 30 years as compared to US? China would be foolish to want war that would derail its economic rise

China talks about invading Taiwan because it views Taiwan as a rogue province that should be under PRC, instead of ROC control. China may start a war over this. Not saying it will happen, but it does tell you that China isn't as unwilling to go to war as it seemsm

@@a11u45 In reality, I can't recall China ever talking about invading Taiwan, the US has said they would, but then I don't think the US controls the PLA yet.

watching this debate in 2021, wondering where Prof. Mearsheimer stands with his "...leadership doesn't matter very much" argument.

On the same ground. He’s talking about foreign relations, not internal affairs, it’s a different type of leadership the one you’re mentioning.

i guess if you follow his arguments and theory, he is correct. As the essential power of country changed and therefore it forces the leader to change the behavior, not the other way around.

yes, 1 is explaining areas where leadership will make a difference (ie military vs economic approach to containment), and the other is explaining areas where leadership won't matter (balance of power politics).

My problem with the whole discussion above is that it does not even consider the question of global terrorism which shifts around and becomes a problem for different countries at different times, sapping both attention and resources. And the pandemic. I have also wondered if the pandemic in China, just before the Chinese New Year, was an attempt to contain the rise of China. The timing was spot on, and if China had not been so disciplined and quick, it would have been a demonstration to the world and to the Chinese that they were a limited and vulnerable country. But instead....

@@franticmower7300 Where have you been over the last decade? Surely you know how the internet has become a recruiting ground for various violent groups? Alt-Right terror led to attacks in New Zealand, the US, UK, and these were the ones that got away. More have been prevented. Religious terrorism has gone global with ISIS and varied other groups who seem to have no other path to power and glory - these are in competition with each other and hike up their levels of violence to get more attention (I suspect with it come donations). I expect this to get worse as climate change displaces more people.

@@nimmiragavan8290 I don't understand how this has anything to do with what has been said in the video. Terrorism exists because it is supported and used by nation states as a tool. Someone's freedom fighter is another's terrorist. What you see as a threat is a mere distraction on larger scale. And what's that about the virus? A conspiracy theory? The virus, if anything, helped China and honestly it would be foolish to think that it is man-made.

@@bruh5361 Following your logic American Leadership don't really matter in its development. So everything is pre ordained? In a War leadership matters and pivotal. In competition between nations Leadership also plays the pivotal role. A snake does not move without its head. Gorbachev led to the Demise of former Soviet Union. Chinese Leadership didn't. Mearsheimer is wrong. According to balance of Power between Soviet Union and US during Cold War it would not have collapsed. It was due to failure of Leadership to successfully reform. Nothing is Autopilot. We make choices. Our choices affect our future. Mearsheimer says Trump wants to withdraw from Syria. And he didn't start stupid new wars. Well who made those decisions? Autopilot or Human decision.

Actually I am a Chinese who are college student now , and baesd on my understanding to my own people, they are probably one of the most practical or realism people in the world. So the so called "ideogoly" is merely an approach to achieve some goals for Chinese leadership, in history the year 1978 is a boundary. When that " ideology" function doesn't work anymore, Chinese people will drop it immediately. So you need to understand the real behind purpose of Chinese leadership, " while the "ideology" is ont the final goal.
