You hit the nail on the head. He speaks to mortality and reflection with being an imperfect human (as we all are) learning life's lessons along the way and striving to do what's right - all with a positive vibe. "17 had turned 35" or "Hold on to 16 as long as you can. Changes come round real soon make us women and men." Walk Tall! 🙏

@@dimedraweriv258 I wouldn't say either of them is the poor man's anything. They're different and similar. They're both champions of the common people and a voice for the kinds of people who wouldn't have a voice otherwise. But Bruce is almost like a mythical figure, and John is the kind of guy you could find hanging out at the local bar and would change your life with some hard-earned wisdom.

He is one of the most underrated artists and songwriters of his generation. He originally went by John Cougar Mellencamp and was viewed by many as a trifling pop artist - especially in comparison to the critically beloved Springsteen (I’m not dissing Bruce). This wrong footed start to his career has left a lasting effect of him not getting near the veneration he deserves.
@Sometimes-even-lyrical
@Sometimes-even-lyrical 2 жыл бұрын
Don't think he cared other than he wanted to do music his way, chafing under industry attempts to shape his image (the "Cougar" appellation the record company put on him without his approval on record releases... he dumped as soon as he could). Mellencamp still is doing things his way, including paintings (he's a fine artist as well as a singer/songwriter, and a good friend of Springsteen...with whom he communicates regularly and shares creative interests).

@@Ou81gi812 He didn't name himself Cougar. It was an early decision made between his manager and the record company, without John's input. He hated it. And as soon as he got more control, he transitioned from Johnny Cougar to John Cougar Mellencamp, and at last, happily, to John Mellencamp.
@Ou81gi812
@Ou81gi812 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sometimes-even-lyrical Back in the day, NOBODY knew any of this…except for John and the record company. I bought his self-titled album, “John Cougar,” because of the long intro of, “I Need a Lover (who won’t drive me crazy) back in ‘79, and because “Cougar” sounded cool. So, as far as I’m concerned, John Cougar will always be John Cougar. I always hated the fact that he felt…”compelled” to add “Mellencamp” to the name after he became famous. There are other examples of people “recreating” themselves after becoming successful like, The Rock wants to be Dwayne Johnson, now. Back in ‘79, flipping through albums, I might buy a record because the album cover was cool, or the name of the group was unique (Lynyrd Skynyrd). If I stumbled across an album titled, “John Mellencamp,” I’d probably keep flipping. So John owes a great deal of gratitude to the record executives who KNEW “Cougar” could sell more albums than “Mellencamp” could…and the movie studio executives that thought “John Wayne” could sell more tickets than “Marion Morrison,” could. Everything you said is true (J.C. even wrote a song about those record executives) but, hindsight is 20/20, and at that moment in time, I chose to give my money to…”Cougar.”

But I find it funny because I always believed that he was telling a story in his music and if you close your eyes you can see the painting he is singing about,like this song it brings back a feel of dancing in a place that is you and a date in a simple small town and it's all about family cookouts and backyard swimming holes and hanging out with friends. So many memories.

That's probably my favorite song of his. Such a good, nostalgia inducing vibe. That instrument is an autoharp. It commonly has 36 strings, with buttons that depress bars which mute all but the strings you want to sound, thus forming chords. Often used in Appalachian folk and other styles. Apparently John didn't actually play it in the song, although he's shown playing it in the video.

Just FTR the instrument is called an Autoharp. It comes from the Zither family and has bars across the many strings with touchpads on the underside so that pressing the button plays only the many strings that make up various chords. That way a player doesn't have to learn how to shape chords or have 15 fingers.

This song made be do a complete 180 when it came to Mellencamp. It also caused me to start my "Lifetime Passes" -- he need do nothing else ever. "We were young and we were improving" "17 has turned 35. I'm surprised that we're still living. If we've done any wrong, I hope that we're forgiven" These lyrics cut straight to my heart. 💥💥 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I'm not a actual fan of John "Cougar" Mellencamp's music but I must admit i absolutely loved this song. It would be in my top 25.

Glad you watched him singing as well as listening. Sometimes just hearing a song doesnt give a total feel of who the performer is.

Having the mixed couple in the video seems to give balance to what the song's saying. There were so many wonderful things we can remember from that time, but some things are better now. The two ideas can both exist - because they do.

This is a great song and video. John got death threats over this as interracial couples were an item still not seen much on TV. Kudos to John for breaking down barriers.

This is my favorite JCM song, it’s so sweet! Nothing like a song about reminiscing to reminisce to! Always bringing back great memories! Love you guys!! Thanks for all the good feelings!

In a sneaky way it was a warning of what America would become if we didn't hold on to our roots. That America was losing its soul. At the time of the song America was caught up in the pursuit of wealth and we were losing our country to greed. You do have to listen to the album. He and Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA album captured this sentiment. I think the experience was much different for people of color than white's in rural areas and suburbia.

JCM is a self described country rocker. Always a great sound. Bittersweet for me, was coming home from a great JCM concert when I got hit by a drunk driver in 86

Never took to Mellencamp until I heard this tune in the late 80s (early 90s?) and you're right, it did make me feel nostalgic even though I was only in my twenties.

John is a hell of a painter, a few years ago Sammy Hagar had him on his interview show, turn out John never really like doing concerts. He did them but did not enjoy them as much as you might think. Very interesting man and fascinating to listen to

I'm so excited that you finally got to this song. I knew you would love it. The instrument he is playing is called a dulcimer I believe but there are many types. Rock on with Mellancamp, there's so much more.🤗🤗🤗🎼🎶🎵

John mellencamp was an active advocate for the family farmer, he's always been a big part of Farm aid and it's made it a part of his music.
