John Mellencamp performs "Pink Houses" live at Farm Aid 2005 at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, Illinois on September 18, 2005. Get this concert on DVD at: FarmAid.org/200...
Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid in 1985 and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Who is going to pick up the mantle when Mellencamp is gone, when Seger is gone, when Billy Joel is gone? Those singers who proudly sing their own material? Who is there to get on stage, then pour out the truth?

The 9/11 attacks took place on a Tuesday. That Saturday we saw Mellencamp at Great Woods just outside of Boston. He came on stage and said "we weren't sure whether to do this show or not and decided if we didn't it would be like letting the terrorists win." Then they launched into this song. Every time I listen to it my eyes still tear up 21 years later.

Very very true statement. This is pure raw talent. It amazes me the "tricks" pulled off today. Even guitar tracks use pre-recorded live tracks during solos not, it socks. The few like John will sound great live forever like Tom Petty and Joe Co ker did keeping it real.

@@jourdanrolland522 unfortunately everybody is "polishing" their music with help, even ones that could be great. To me a real live show shows the real talent but these days EVERYONE uses recorded tracks live. Today in a live show when one puts the guitar behind their neck to play its usually a recorded track, even guitar heroes, the great ones do it.

@erik Knudsen oh that’s absolutely true. My point is though, that there are plenty that don’t. Tyler Childers, Billy Strings, Rebelution, Iration, Slightly Stoopid, Passafire, Colter Wall, and Sturgill Simpson just to name a few.

@@jourdanrolland522 I agree, even some you mentioned (I will check out the others) are doing it raw and great, we just need to find them. The industry is a wreck unfortunately. Even ones back in the day got shelved because that one band on the label made it and that's where the money went. Back in the 50s and early 60s the labels released everyone but slowed down in the 70s and stopped in the 80s. Thats why so many one hit wonders came out early on. Its a shame too.

@@charleswestfall622 I saw him a few times in the 1990s. Once at an outdoor venue, and once in a theater. He sounded great both times. It’s unfortunate that he smoked his vocal chords out of existence. I would have liked seeing more of him. One thing he was always good at was hiring talented musicians to back him. Kenny was on drums both times I saw him. Lisa was on violin. Would have killed to be in the audience of the MTV Unplugged special. That version of All Along The Watchtower should have been released.

Larry Klawiter ….you’re not the silent majority and never were, also you should really read the lyrics/meaning of the song if you think this is a “blind patriotism” song. Also Mellencamp’s legal team has sent cease and desist letters to certain republican politicians and organizations when they tried to use this song for their rallies and he disagrees with their stances.

To be truthful, it was all gone, the music and the movement, with the advent of the Eighties, although the vitality was shot by the end of the war. Was the apex Kent State or Woodstock? Sometimes, I have no concept of time and it seems it hasn't left us. You just have to know where it is today. The idea of peace and love will never die. The preposterously brilliant music, however, comes in comet time, and we shall not see the likes soon.

@@roningram5877 I agree with you that this is the reality today, however you have to understand that nothing stays the same. We are in the infancy of sustainable power home to home. This means one day you may only be connected to utilities for backup. In my opinion society will eventually recognize that most of our health problems are related to our diets. This will be re-enforced by startling evidence that that our ability to repel viruses as COVID-19, will be based on simple relationships between our diet and immunity. This will be long coming but in the end, the family farm will return as people realize that their access to WFPB (Whole Food Plant Based) will be augmented, by the production of more plants with less (or zero), meat and diary farm systems. The US has wide swaths of farm-able land. The small family farm will return, like yuppies in the 80's. We will interact and be employed 95% online, remotely. We can't cry for yesterday, we will survive other different ways.

Such a shame that a small number of very rich people in power prioritized themselves instead of everyone else and now the dream of pink houses is a harder and harder reality. Get involved in your local civic and public life folks. Let’s make sure the country to get to a place where folks have a real chance to own something of their own and enjoy life.

My daughter nailed this song at age 6 with a microphone plugged in to a amp while the record played ( not to mention that she was swiping my beer ) it took me a minute to figure out what was happening to my pony Millers! I stood back and abserved her. I was cleaning house and my beer would be in the kitchen on the counter. When i would leave the room I watched her see grabed that little beer went straight to th mic and to my surprise she had the song and a few more from the album nailed! I then proceed to put my beer on the top of the refrigerator...

Struck me... I listened to Mellencamp a lot in the 80's... And a friend critisized him heavily today, which lead me here. ironic? Anyway, my heart goes out to America, I still love you, you were the best place I ever was allowed to call "home". I miss you, and my biggest wish, besides getting my kids to be healthy and happy adults, is to return to you. Not a day passes, where I don't pray for every U.S-Citizen, and Expat on U.S -ground.

I mean EVERY literally. U.S citizenship is not something decided by today's government, they have violated every "american" thought, in my point of view.

In the 80's I drove semi, hauling Ford production parts. In Indiana the radio was all John. When in Detroit and Michigan the radio was Bob Seger, Northern IN and Southern MI it was both......man that was the best of times!
