How awesome. Any good tips looking to fly in 2024 from Canada and do this for my 50th. Aug sept or early oct. Would you be able to hammock camp most of this?

This is an EPIC section of the JMT. You're going to love it. Should be no issue whatsoever with your hammock in this area. Rumor is this is going to be another high snow year so late Aug into Sept are good targets. You'll see mosquitos but nothing like you don't already experience in Canada. My suggestion on travel: Fly into Reno and take the Eastern Sierra Transit (www.estransit.com/) to Mammoth. There's a shuttle from Mammoth Mountain Inn (good place to stay) down to Reds Meadow. That's what I'd do. When you get to Yosemite you can take YARTS (yarts.com/) back to Mammoth and from there take the Eastern Sierra Transit back to Reno.

There's a "JMT North of Devils Postpile " permit from Inyo National Forest you can obtain for this trip.

Awesome video! Beautiful scenery. Day two 14 miles with 4000ft elevation gain...ouch! Great that you guys made it safe and sound and I bet Peet's coffee, burger and the shower combination on the last day was awesome. Keep on backpacking.

how hard was it to get a permit for that section?

Not too bad. If you try for the JMT North permit it'll be hard but you can use permits for entry to Minaret Lake or Beck Lake as well. The quota is for the trailhead, once you're in you're free to travel to Yosemite Valley or Tuolumne.

Great video! I'm terrified of bears/bobcats/things that can kill me? I'm considering doing Red Meadows to Happy Isles. Any advice?

I would worry more about eating right and having a great time than I would about bears. And if you're going this year, the lack if water between Tuolomne Meadows and Nevada Falls. Black bears just want your food. They're more afraid of you than you are of them. Just be sure to put anything that smells (food, trash, sunscreen, toothpaste, chap stick, ...anything that has a scent) in your bear canister each night and you'll be fine. We didn't see any bears on this trip but they're around so store your food appropriatley. Just think....how many news reports have you heard about people being attacked in the Sierra this century? It just doesn't happen... Relax, have a good time.
