“I Remember Everything” by John Prine
I’ve been down this road before
I remember every tree
Every single blade of grass
Holds a special place for me
And I remember every town
And every hotel room
And every song I ever sang
On a guitar out of tune
I remember everything
Things I can’t forget
The way you turned and smiled on me
On the night that we first met
And I remember every night
Your ocean eyes of blue
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
I’ve been down this road before
Alone as I can be
Careful not to let my past
Go sneaking up on me
Got no future in my happiness
Though regrets are very few
Sometimes a little tenderness
Was the best that I could do
I remember everything
Things I can’t forget
Swimming pools of butterflies
That slipped right through the net
And I remember every night
Your ocean eyes of blue
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

I remember the evening John came home having written a new song with Pat McLaughlin. He loved to write with Pat because it meant he got to hang out with him-they were old friends and committed co-writers. John and Pat had shared many Meat and Three lunches and written some beautiful songs together over the years. I had never seen John quite like this when he had a new song to bring home. He literally bounced in the door, immediately took his guitar from its case and said, “Listen to this Fi...” He was excited and proud, but there was something else too. As he picked the melody I could see he was emotional with tears welling up in his eyes. “I’ve been down this road before, alone as I can be careful not to let my past go sneakin’ up on me.... He stumbled over some of the lyrics, stopped, and started again. A yearning, evocative, and simple melody; his classic fingerpicking and a somewhat familiar yet new 3-chord melody from the same old D-28 John had written every song on. “I remember everything, things I can’t forget the way you turned and smiled on me on the night that we first met...” He made it through the song and explained there were still some tweaks needed and asked, “What do you think Fi ?” We were both crying a little by now and I told him it was beautiful - that it was as beautiful a song as he had ever written. John would always say, ‘No song before it’s time.’ I’m not sure if he heard that from someone else but I know he absolutely believed it to be true. It appears John knew more than I imagined about the demands of Time. He left us a beautiful and timely parting gift. Thank you, John. Thank you, for Everything. Fiona Whelan Prine

Thank you so much for sharing this memory with us. I have loved his music since I was a kid. Now that I am old, I especially love this song, and “I remember everything, things I can’t forget the way you turned and smiled on me on the night that we first met...” I do try not to let my past go sneakin' up on me, but it often does.

My dad and I shared a deep love for John's music. He and my mother were killed in a car accident this past May, and I like to imagine Daddy's sitting on a pretty hillside picking with John, and Momma's within earshot watching the birds and squirrels as John's magical voice trails through the air. There was nothing outside of family that Daddy loved more than good music, so that's inevitably his heaven.

No musical artist has ever affected me as deeply as John Prine. I never tire of listening to the simple poetry of his lyrics and the elegant picking of his strings. “I Remember Everything” is so beautiful, yet so melancholy. A life well lived...but far too short.

Much love to the Prine family. My short interaction with one of his sons was a pleasant one, especially considering I was out of my mind at the time. Sorry for freaking out the folks at the record label, the good news is I'm much better now, and I managed to find some answers on my journey. I wish I had had the chance to see John play live, but I'm glad to have his music to comfort me for the rest of time.

Leave it to my music hero of 47 years to leave us with a perfect denouement to the end of his phenomenal songwriting career. All three of my books of Songs and Poetry give John Prine credit for sparking the writer in me. I am forever thankful and grateful that I was turned on to his music at the age of 17 in 1973. Just before I joined the Navy... Thousands of Submarine Sailors have heard me sing his songs since 1974...They ALL appreciated his style and intellect... I spent my entire adult life trying to write just one song that could match up to him...But I never did... I will miss him forever...But I will forever remember every song he ever sang too... Rest in Peace Handsome Johnny and save the Wednesday night Gig at the Tree of Forgiveness in Heaven for me man...I can hardly wait to book a steady show there... God Bless the Family and all John Prine fans everywhere...Here's my tribute to John from a few years back I wrote for his 70th Birthday. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYaZq36cm8qghpI

As far as last records go I sure thought Tree of Forgiveness was a helluva swan song, even more so after he passed. That this is the last song he wrote and recorded, particularly given how he died and the current state of the world....it’s simply magic. He left us with something to help us grieve his loss. Who, but John Prine, does this? Blessings to his family and loved ones.

Hearing this takes me back to the time when I used to live in those hills. I can picture Tyler topping that hill with busted boots and overalls carrying that fox. With a big shit grin he hands me a 50$ bill and the fox as if handing me a trophy or a badge of honor. There’s more to the story but the song captures the moment in time so clear as do most of his songs. It’s this song and story that’s the inspiration for the fox on his album covers. Thanks T. Aaron.
