"Lonesome Friends of Science"
The lonesome friends of science say
"The world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog, and my family, uh-huh
Now Poor ol' planet Pluto down
He never stood a chance no how
When he got uninvited to
The interplanetary dance
Once a mighty planet there
Now just an ordinary star
Hangin' out in Hollywood
In some ol' funky sushi bar
The lonesome friends of science say
"The world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog and my kids, and me uh-huh
The Vulcan lives in Birmingham
Sometimes he just don't give a damn
His head is full of bumblebees
His pride hangs down below his knees
Venus left him long ago
For a guy named Mars from Idaho
The Vulcan sent a wedding gift
Three-legged stool and a wheelchair lift uh-huh
The lonesome friends of science say
"This world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog, my kids and me uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Those bastards in their white lab coats
Who experiment with mountain goats
Should leave the universe alone
It's not their business, not their home
I go to sleep and it never rains
My dog predicts hurricanes
She can smell a storm a mile away
That's all the news we have today uh-huh
The lonesome friends of science say
"The world will end most any day"
Well, if it does, then that's okay
'Cause I don't live here anyway
I live down deep inside my head
Well, long ago I made my bed
I get my mail in Tennessee
My wife, my dog and my family
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh

Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
He worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

Sad day today. I first heard your music in 1975 and it has stuck with me ever since. I was 23 then and when I heard Hello in There, I felt sorry for those old folks, I guess that was partly the point. The other to have some empathy.... Now I am "those old folks" and for me, it gives the song a whole new meaning. How could you have been that insightful in your 20's.....guess that was your genius. Thanks for the memories John Prine, your work here is done, may you rest peacefully.

John Prine, it's great to hear you are keen to get back on the road. My family will be at your show in London (England) later this year. I'm hoping we can get to meet you in person as my 11 year old son is as big a fan of you as I am. We are looking forward to the premier this evening (8pm here). My son has had a stent at two weeks old. He doesn't remember it of course but I certainly do.

The first time I saw John play live was in 1984. It was him and Steve Goodman. They played at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When I heard they were coming, I literally ran to the box office and got 4 tickets. Second row, center. I had been listening to him for almost 10 years by then, mostly while stationed in Germany in the army. To see him and Steve in person was the culmination of my music listening journey. I still have the ticket stub and have since scanned it to help preserve the memory. Thanks, John, for bringing us to this moment.

Been listening to John Prine for years the unique thing about his songs that i have found the songs i dont at first care for usually become my favorites this is another example of that the first one for me was sweet revenge years ago when I first heard it it just didn't jive with me then one day things changed and it meant so much to me and still dose today the only thing I can compare this to is the writings of the Bible as i study it i may not get a particular passage but then it hits me i believe John and Hank Williams SR ARE UP in heaven cracking jokes and playing music making GOD smile see you brothers when I get there

20 years ago I moved from NY to Tampa and auditioned for a band shortly afterward. Having never played the particular genre of music this band did, they gave me a tape of songs to learn. It was then that I heard John Prine for the first time with tunes like Paradise and Far from me. At the audition I mentioned how great those songs were and asked who it was? They laughed at me and said are you kidding me? That's John Prine. You don't know John Prine? I didn't up until that point, but I started listening to a lot of his work, and he soon became one of my favorite songwriters of all time. Damn will he be missed? Even more so in the future then now, because his vintage only improves with time. As writers of his ilk become fewer and fewer, we'll miss him more and more.

You still in the area? What would Tampa be without the St Pete music scene, WMNF, or Skippers Smokehouse? Saw John at his last St Pete show in December, and that made it even harder when he made transition so few months after. But it will always be a treasured memory.

@@TampaDave I'm still around. I used to get homesick now and again. But with each visit back to NY, it gradually diminished until I eventually did a complete 360°. Now when I visit NY, I miss Florida. I was totally surprised when I first moved here to discover all the excellent musicians and great music scene in this area at the time. Now that I'm retired I'm looking to get back into playing more regularly. The problem I've had is finding musicians around my age. I have no problem playing with the younger guys, it's the younger guys that don't understand that I'm not old, I'm Vintage. There's a difference.

@@TampaDave I believe I saw them at Skippers years ago if it's the same band I'm thinking of. The band I saw was an excellent Grateful Dead cover band. But that was quite a while ago.

@@mtp4430 yes, they used to play every Thursday. For over 1100 Thursdays. They play some Sundays at Skippers now.

Hope you’re on the mend John. My friends and I flew from Toronto to Denver this past weekend to see your show at Red Rocks....we bought the tickets a couple months back. We were so saddened to hear what you were going through. We will just have to catch you next time when you’re in Toronto again....most important thing is you get healthy....much love
