I was introduced to this song my by father, John, back in November 2019 while sitting in the ER in Pittsburgh. We had just heard from the doctors that his cancer was terminal and with tears in his eyes he asked my brother and I to make sure we played this at his funeral. He was much like John Prine in his humourous ways, and I recently learned of the passing if John Prine just a month before my own father passed. I hope these two Johns are up there singing together now and will be happy to watch down and see us play this when we celebrate my father's life with all his close friends and family in a couple of weeks.❤

I was fortunate enough to see John Prine perform several times and happy to see that Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed him to be the "Mark Twain of American song writing" in 2017. It is a appropriate honor. You will be missed by many, John.

Rolling Stone would proclaim Mark Twain the "Mark Twain of Literature" if it'd elect some fool "Blue, No Matter Who."
@paulo4771 Жыл бұрын
@@ezekielbrockmann114 With all respect to whatever feelings or insight you may (think you) possess, I don't know (or care about) the "politics" of RS, but knowing the abundance of folky Americana songs Mr. Prine wrote that captured a lot of the essence of American culture, a proclamation like that to celebrate his life is an appropriate comparison to Mark Twain. But then again, perhaps you have some distain for all three parties involved....or just the world in general?

Met a guy named Beau Jenks outside The Sting, a nightclub in New Britain Ct in 1992 who knew the song. Neither of us knew the artist. Beau was the only person I ever met that knew the song. Been looking for this on KZbin and the internet in general for a long time. Thank you for posting!

Back in the day, I was lucky enough to see John perform songs from his first album at a university somewhere in the Cincinnati area. So long ago I've forgotten exactly where, but we were sitting on bleachers and he put on a show like none other. I learned quite a few of his songs on the guitar and still play and sing them from time to time, including this one. Thanks for the memories and all the great music, John... you will have a special place in my heart forever... RIP wherever you may be... now I just gotta go and have myself a good cry.

Thank you for sharing it. I was just telling my teenage daughter about this song. Her brother is in his mid twenties now but when he was only four, myself and himself had a little fun ritual on school mornings. We went daily for a fresh apple for lunch to the local shop. Fresh fruit deliveries every morning. We'd leave the house, close the garden gate and link arms. Then I'd do the "intro" and we'd sing and skip all the way to the shop. If we went the short way, we never got to finish it. After a week of that we started going the long way to the shop and then we got to the end of it every morning. Plus we had spent more time skipping without knowing - health boost. John Prine is my absolute favourite singer/songwriter. Thanks again for sharing.

Love this comment. It's really interesting to compare this with the version of Souvenirs. John is about 24 years old here, and about 54 when he re-recorded it for the Souvenirs album. The original version has a lot of his early spunk and fire, but he's lowered the key, slowed it down, and in general mellowed out (as we all do) 30 years later. I love listening to both versions back-to-back.

When my soul went through the ceiling And on up into heaven I did ride When I got there they did say John, it happened this way You slipped upon the floor And hit your head And all the angels say Just before you passed away These were the very last words That you said Please don't bury me Down in the cold cold ground No, I'd druther have 'em cut me up And pass me all around Throw my brain in a hurricane And the blind can have my eyes And the deaf can take both of my ears If they don't mind the size Give my stomach to Milwaukee If they run out of beer Put my socks in a cedar box Just get 'em out of here Venus de Milo can have my arms Look out! I've got your nose Sell my heart to the Junkman And give my love to Rose But please don't bury me Down in that cold, cold ground No, I'd druther have 'em cut me up And pass me all around Throw my brain in a hurricane And the blind can have my eyes And the deaf can take both of my ears If they don't mind the size Give my feet to the footloose Careless, fancy free Give my knees to the needy Don't pull that stuff on me Hand me down my walking cane It's a sin to tell a lie Send my mouth way down south And kiss my ass goodbye But please don't bury me Down in that cold cold ground No, I'd druther have 'em cut me up And pass me all around Throw my brain in a hurricane And the blind can have my eyes And the deaf can take both of my ears If they don't mind the size
