John Prine at his finest, and joined by Lyle Lovett and Marty Stuart to perform "That's The Way The World Goes 'Round" live in 1989. John tells the 'happy enchilada' story, which should be required listening for all music fans.

John Prine was a genius, the working man's Dylan.

Ultimately, Lyle Lovett would become a nationally prominent entertainer. What a wonderful group of talent.

If anyone could figure a way to put a happy enchilada in a song, John was the guy who could do it! A master wordsmith.

It was a lifetime love affair for me too. Still listening and over 65 years old. Cried when I heard he died in Nashville (nearby).

John's great friend Philip Donnelly there also. There is a sad piece on YT where John does a special dedication to Philip, who had just died. Sadly though, John was to pass just a few months later. I know they had some crazy times together, so I hope they are 'cutting up a rug' rite now in heaven. RIO John & Phillip.

Although obviously district styles, reminds me a lot of Chris Kristofferson... absolute genius from humble origins and circumstances.

Steve Goodman first discovered John. But he then insisted Kris (with a K) come hear John play at a club where he was working. It was after hours and John was off sleeping in a corner. They woke him up, and John sang Sam Stone and a couple of other songs for them. Kris loved him so much, he had him immediately sing them again. Then Kris made sure John met the right people to get a recording contract, and the rest was history. So yeah, there is a certain similarity, in that they share that song writing genius ability, and the same amazing talent of using words in ways we mortals never thought of. They were good friends, and it's easy to see why! 😊 Kris's background wasn't humble, though. His dad was a high ranking member of the military. And Kris himself was a Rhodes Scholar. And he gave up an appointment to teach English at West Point, to go try his luck as a song writer in Nashville. At which point his parents disinherited him, because they felt a career in the music biz was beneath their lofty station in life. But yes, far as I know John's background was pretty humble. And yes, I, too, am a big fan of both of them!

"1/2" ench-alada." That is gold. Thank you for posting this. I will always miss John! Gonna use "half a-enchelada" in my professional career when I describe stuff for now on.

Here is my tribute to the great John Prine, new lyrics to his That’s the Way the World Goes ‘Round. Not as good as his, of course, but hopefully with some of his wit. A good way to remember him. I know a fella who ‘bout ev’ry night Drank and smoked by some candlelight By sunrise, he was an awful sight But he had completed his song. He sang his tune, asked to be heard Worked to be clever with ev’ry word His guitar ringing, his voice like a bird (That last line is probably wrong.) That’s the way the world goes ‘round Some dislike, others love your sound One day here, the next heaven-bound That’s the way the world goes ‘round

I met John Prine in a bar in Antioch, TN in 1995. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know who he was at the time. The bar had a guy(not John)singing and playing guitar with a drum machine. Then this guy(John Prine) took the stage and a guitar and sang “Let’s Talk Dirty In Hawaiian”. I had never heard of him or the song. I thought he sounded too good to be an amateur. Afterwards, he came to the bar and I asked who had written that song. He said he had written it but didn’t tell me his name. He looked about how he does in this video except his hair was shorter and he was wearing a white tennis outfit.
