My son died three weeks ago of cancer at 46. Way too young and left a wonderful wife and twin children. I always loved listening to John and was deeply hurt at his passing. I listen to this and my heart is happy and sad. I remember every moment of my son’s life. I will miss him like “roses miss the dew” until we meet again and I hope we will go Whistling and Fishing in Heaven.

I lost my son ,46 yes old, 2 beautiful children, hard working getting his own business going. He died with cancer. 3,5 years later I still think of him daily. Good memories and not so good things, but I guess we all drag things up. John has a way of sparking things up. Saw him in Toronto, Dec 2019...thankfully.

My father passed away last night. He would have been 76 in Jan. I haven't seen him in two months, since he went into the emergency room and then was admitted to the nursing home, due to Covid the facility. It's strange how things like this just pop up when you seem to need them. Or maybe it's not strange at all. Either way, thank you for this. RIP John and Dad

@Emer Henry I'm so very sorry for your tremendous losses. I lost my father to suicide in 1998; he was 47. Grief comes in waves-- one moment you're _almost_ okay, the next you're knocked to your knees. It could be a scent, a song, a funny joke you hear but cannot share-- so many emotional landmines. It's an arduous process but endure it we must. Please share your sorrow with trusted confidants & possibly a grief counselor. It may seem unbelievable but the passing of time *will* dull your heartbreak, friend. The day *will* come when treasured memories bring more smiles & fewer tears. Take care, Emer. I wish you comfort & healing. Sincerely, Rebecca Alabama, USA

@@rrbaggett7 Ah Rebecca, thank you so much. To take time out of your day to write all that down - well it's just incredulous that you would do that for a stranger. It means the absolute world to me. I lost my mam in 2006 and I totally agree, with time the memories do bring more smiles and fewer tears. It's a long slow process, but I'll get there. Bless your good heart

@@bluecurlygirl Your generous response was an unexpected delight for me. I'm nobody special; I just try to make time for people, especially those in pain. I know all too well the isolation that accompanies grief. Yes, everyone has lost someone special but they've never lost _your_ special someone. Therefore, they cannot know _your_ pain. I think that is precisely why grief makes us feel disconnected from well-wishers. Despite this, I encourage you to lean on those you trust. I've no doubt you'll make it through & come out the other side okay. Treat yourself well. ❤ Best wishes, Rebecca

When John came in like an apparition, my eyes welled up with tears flowing "like a broken down dam". John's death is truly one of the most horrible outcomes of this pandemic. So much pain in the world, that song is the conduit that John left behind for all of us to remember we are one. When that openhearted sentiment becomes our true revolution, John will have proved that he made "Heaven and earth go dancing in time" in his song. His loss is still as raw as an uncooked pork chop. We love you, we miss you, your family's pain is in our hearts as well. Absolutely one of the best music vids on YT right now.

I saw him 4 times over the years. I was always singing with the crowd who sang loudly to the chorus of "Illegal Smile," Always the one who cheered the loudest when the he played first notes of "Angel From Montgomery," and always the sap who was wiping his eyes after he finished "Souvenirs." I never met the man, but I know he heard me. Odd as it may seem, I take some small amount of comfort in that. That those songs that he wrote, and I saw him perform, will be being played and sung for generations to come, long after both he and I are gone.

LOVELY. I just wrote this for my Mother, just a few days ago. She passed in 2009... I REMEMBER YOU, When you walked out from the road straight into the Rain, I remember Sunshine when it didn't shine much that day I remember old songs and pictures that tell of love, I remember too often, the things that you taught me too walking to the edge of life the cliffs can't stop me falling but the memories of you they do, yes they certainly do I remember laughter, when it was only crying too I remember speaking and not being spoken too do you remember Starlight, when no one else will do a silent dozen voices but all I know is you Do you remember forever it was there you pointed to yesterday was simple because I remember you Life was never empty the grass was always green Can you remember tomorrow its time passes too I remember Forever it's there I meet with you Yes, I remember everything and it's all because of you. Thank you, Mother... jamesglen2020

I've always felt John wrote this song for my wife and I. He describes perfectly how she turned and smiled at me the night that we first met. We had 32 years together before we divorced like idiots. We started dating again and continued to do so for the next 20 years or so. She was ultimately diagnosed with ALS. I moved her into my home to take care of her. We sat and held each other in the morning light so often. I proposed to her again and we were married again and she passed the next day. John's words of missing her in the morning light drive the pain into my heart and tears into my eyes. Cass, I miss you in the morning light and miss you in my life

They used to do songs by Dylan, Presley, Kristofferson and that kind of stuff. But they also did songs that i didn't know like Souvenirs and Illegal Smile. This was how I discovered John Prine and I am so glad I did. He had the gift of writing songs that got to you from the first time you heard them.
