"I Remember Everything" (Lyrics)
Alright
I've been down this road before
I remember every tree
Every single blade of grass
Holds a special place for me
And I remember every town
And every hotel room
And every song I ever sang
On a guitar out of tune
I remember everything
Things I can't forget
The way you turned and smiled on me
On the night that we first met
And I remember every night
Your ocean eyes of blue
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
I've been down this road before
Alone as I can be
Careful not to let my past
Go sneaking up on me
Got no future in my happiness
Though regrets are very few
Sometimes a little tenderness
Was the best that I could do
I remember everything
Things I can't forget
Swimming pools of butterflies
That slipped right through the net
And I remember every night
Your ocean eyes of blue
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

My son died three weeks ago of cancer at 46. Way too young and left a wonderful wife and twin children. I always loved listening to John and was deeply hurt at his passing. I listen to this and my heart is happy and sad. I remember every moment of my son’s life. I will miss him like “roses miss the dew” until we meet again and I hope we will go Whistling and Fishing in Heaven.

I lost my son ,46 yes old, 2 beautiful children, hard working getting his own business going. He died with cancer. 3,5 years later I still think of him daily. Good memories and not so good things, but I guess we all drag things up. John has a way of sparking things up. Saw him in Toronto, Dec 2019...thankfully.

My father passed away last night. He would have been 76 in Jan. I haven't seen him in two months, since he went into the emergency room and then was admitted to the nursing home, due to Covid the facility. It's strange how things like this just pop up when you seem to need them. Or maybe it's not strange at all. Either way, thank you for this. RIP John and Dad

@Emer Henry I'm so very sorry for your tremendous losses. I lost my father to suicide in 1998; he was 47. Grief comes in waves-- one moment you're _almost_ okay, the next you're knocked to your knees. It could be a scent, a song, a funny joke you hear but cannot share-- so many emotional landmines. It's an arduous process but endure it we must. Please share your sorrow with trusted confidants & possibly a grief counselor. It may seem unbelievable but the passing of time *will* dull your heartbreak, friend. The day *will* come when treasured memories bring more smiles & fewer tears. Take care, Emer. I wish you comfort & healing. Sincerely, Rebecca Alabama, USA

@@rrbaggett7 Ah Rebecca, thank you so much. To take time out of your day to write all that down - well it's just incredulous that you would do that for a stranger. It means the absolute world to me. I lost my mam in 2006 and I totally agree, with time the memories do bring more smiles and fewer tears. It's a long slow process, but I'll get there. Bless your good heart

@@bluecurlygirl Your generous response was an unexpected delight for me. I'm nobody special; I just try to make time for people, especially those in pain. I know all too well the isolation that accompanies grief. Yes, everyone has lost someone special but they've never lost _your_ special someone. Therefore, they cannot know _your_ pain. I think that is precisely why grief makes us feel disconnected from well-wishers. Despite this, I encourage you to lean on those you trust. I've no doubt you'll make it through & come out the other side okay. Treat yourself well. ❤ Best wishes, Rebecca

When John came in like an apparition, my eyes welled up with tears flowing "like a broken down dam". John's death is truly one of the most horrible outcomes of this pandemic. So much pain in the world, that song is the conduit that John left behind for all of us to remember we are one. When that openhearted sentiment becomes our true revolution, John will have proved that he made "Heaven and earth go dancing in time" in his song. His loss is still as raw as an uncooked pork chop. We love you, we miss you, your family's pain is in our hearts as well. Absolutely one of the best music vids on YT right now.

I saw him 4 times over the years. I was always singing with the crowd who sang loudly to the chorus of "Illegal Smile," Always the one who cheered the loudest when the he played first notes of "Angel From Montgomery," and always the sap who was wiping his eyes after he finished "Souvenirs." I never met the man, but I know he heard me. Odd as it may seem, I take some small amount of comfort in that. That those songs that he wrote, and I saw him perform, will be being played and sung for generations to come, long after both he and I are gone.

LOVELY. I just wrote this for my Mother, just a few days ago. She passed in 2009... I REMEMBER YOU, When you walked out from the road straight into the Rain, I remember Sunshine when it didn't shine much that day I remember old songs and pictures that tell of love, I remember too often, the things that you taught me too walking to the edge of life the cliffs can't stop me falling but the memories of you they do, yes they certainly do I remember laughter, when it was only crying too I remember speaking and not being spoken too do you remember Starlight, when no one else will do a silent dozen voices but all I know is you Do you remember forever it was there you pointed to yesterday was simple because I remember you Life was never empty the grass was always green Can you remember tomorrow its time passes too I remember Forever it's there I meet with you Yes, I remember everything and it's all because of you. Thank you, Mother... jamesglen2020

I've always felt John wrote this song for my wife and I. He describes perfectly how she turned and smiled at me the night that we first met. We had 32 years together before we divorced like idiots. We started dating again and continued to do so for the next 20 years or so. She was ultimately diagnosed with ALS. I moved her into my home to take care of her. We sat and held each other in the morning light so often. I proposed to her again and we were married again and she passed the next day. John's words of missing her in the morning light drive the pain into my heart and tears into my eyes. Cass, I miss you in the morning light and miss you in my life

I will surely miss the characters that he developed through his writings. I heard him say he was going to heaven when he dies. nicely done by all... this is a song where you just close your eyes and sing it with everything you got...heart and soul...just maybe John`s greatest song and how ironic it was his last...gone way to soon...he was just hitting stride with more miles to go...very unfortunate set of circumstances....he died at the hands of a woman........canada

Back in the 1970's some friends and I used to go to a pub in the Kent countryside on a Sunday evening called the Who'd a Thought It' They had a band called the Private Parts Band or PPB. They used to do songs by Dylan, Presley, Kristofferson and that kind of stuff. But they also did songs that i didn't know like Souvenirs and Illegal Smile. This was how I discovered John Prine and I am so glad I did. He had the gift of writing songs that got to you from the first time you heard them. His wise words have been the soundtrack to my life for the last 40 years and I was lucky enough to see him live in London at the Palladium. Thanks John for all the memories.

Its been over a year and I still miss John Prine. I fell halfway guilty about that, knowing millions of people have lost people much closer to them. But, then again, he’s meant a lot to me over the past 50 years since I first heard “Hello in There”, Sam Stone, Paradise….and all that came thereafter.

Oh me, the waterworks started the minute John appeared onscreen. Now I'm in a flood of tears. John Prine was the only best friend I ever had that I never met. We grew up together in different houses.

I've been playing and singing this song since just a few days after I saw the video with John in his home. If you can get through it without tearing up, congratulations. It is a wonderful, simple, beautiful tribute and I'm really glad John got to put it out as his last song. What an incredible songwriter he was, giving gifts that will endure for generations. Thank you John Prine. You stand out as one of the best of all time.

The last song he recorded, it brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. I’ve loved him since I first heard Sam Stone on KZAP radio when it first came out. I drove down to Tower Records that night just to get the album. RIP, John, we miss you.
