Lyrics:
I been thinking lately about the people I meet
The carwash on the corner and the hole in the street
The way my ankles hurt with shoes on my feet
I'm wondering if I'm gonna see tomorrow
Father forgive us for what we must do
You forgive us and we'll forgive you
We'll forgive each other 'til we both turn blue
And we'll whistle and go fishing in the heavens
I was in the army but I never dug a trench
I used to bust my nuckles on a monkey wrench
I'd go to town and drink and give the girls a pinch
I don't think they ever even noticed me
Fish and whistle, whistle and fish
Eat everything that they put on your dish
When we get through we'll make a big wish
That we never have to do this again, again? again?
On my very first job I said thank-you and please
They made me scrub a parking lot down on my knees
Then I got fired for being scared of bees
And they only give me fifty cents an hour
Fish and whistle, whistle and fish
Eat everything that they put on your dish
When we get through we'll make a big wish
That we never have to do this again, again? again?
We'll whistle and go fishing in the heavens
We'll whistle and go fishing in the heavens

@@fonz-solo8251 I understand that, and it saddens me. I was simply wondering why so many people think he went to heaven. I've been hoping to find evidence of John's faith in Jesus and transformed life. It's possible I suppose but I have found no evidence whatsoever that he was born again or had any actual faith. I know he wrote a song about the missing years but it was a mockery. There's only one way to heaven, and that's through faith in the resurrection and a confession that Jesus is Lord. Sadly, I suspect John's not with Jesus right now. I hope and pray I'm wrong.

@@awakentruth1116 god that's a sad perspective. If Jesus is halfway decent he'll be on John's side. Throw some salt over your shoulder and recite your favourite trademarked ancient poetry if you like but I doubt it's important. Thank goodness for John Prine, his music and his inspiration.
@awakentruth1116
@awakentruth1116 4 жыл бұрын
@@user-wp5fe8ec6l It's not about Jesus being decent, though He is. It's about Him being JUST and HOLY. His words are very clear... "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." He also said, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." We are all sinners. John was a wonderfully skilled musician that brought much happiness to people during his life, but bringing people joy won't get you into heaven. John was just as much a sinner as you and I. God tells us, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." There is only ONE way to heaven, friend, and that is through faith and trust in Jesus. It's done by confessing to God that we are a sinner, repenting (changing our mind) of our sins and believing on Jesus for salvation (He paid for our sins with His blood). I don't know that John ever repented or believed on Jesus. Normally there's evidence of a life change (consider Brian Welch if Korn), and I don't see evidence for that. Depite popular belief, people don't just automatically go to heaven when they die. Maybe you should consider Jesus while there is still time for you. Be blessed

He was a songwriter's songwriter. I read something recently that said even if you never heard of him, some of your favorite musicians from pop to country to folk, even R&B were influenced by him. I can't state it better than that. Every time I see a random crooner in a bar, no matter the genre he/she is playing. What a pleasant stumble upon! Back in '86, had this song playing over & over in my head while i had taken my 6 yr. old son & his 2 sunday school buddies fishing for perch. The perch bed was just a hoppin. Kept me so busy baiting & releasing, that i never got to wet a hook myself. Dawned on me after a while, just how busy He is too... forever baitin & releasin the things in within our lives. Too boot, i had the 3 basic races in my in my care as well. Brought strong to mind the Makers words of John's other present day witness to the world... Bob Dylan. When the lyrical line from "I and I" stated... "I've made shoes for everyone, even you, while I still go barefoot." Shoe fit the bill that day over me never gettin a chance to wet my own hook. 61617

He will pass in the next few weeks so it was probably the last time we will get to play with him. When we got home my dad got out his guitar and played this song. I had never heard it before but it brought tears to my eyes. Grief is such a strange thing. All I know is i’m honored to have known this man, he’s an incredible musician. And this song will always make me think of him playing his resonator guitar and his fiddle like he did today.

~~~ GONE FISHING ~~~
@tonyroberts985
Father forgive us for what we must do You forgive us; we'll forgive you We'll forgive each other till we both turn blue Then we'll whistle and go fishing in heaven. I don't know what John Prine believed in his heart. No doubt there are countless Christians who would cry "Blasphemer" at the notion that God would need our forgiveness. This Christian doesn't see it that way. I think God is delighted to go fishing with someone who can both receive pardon and bear no grudges. I wonder if the fish are biting in heaven right now?
I greatly fear John, at his age and a shot immune system, is facing a final battle----if so, we will have lost a national treasure but one who left behind a library of his unique story telling and music through the years. Fare thee well John and thank you.
Praying every day for him since I heard the news over the weekend. He beat cancer, and I believe he can beat this too. God Bless John Prine.
