Thanks to John for this video! Brenda interviews John Romero about Rocket Jumping in Quake and what he thought about it. This is for a student project.

I wish Carmack and Romero would just sit down and talk. I could listen to both those guys every day

Does anyone else hear the grenade bounce sound because of the reverb in the room?

Its part of the OST for Quake 1. I always remember saying "Where the heck is that Ogre? Oh, that's just a part of the music".

Marathon had rocket jumping before Quake

What does he mean they didn't know about it? There's a secret it E4M4 that requires a grenade jump!
@johnsavage35862 жыл бұрын
It was probably discovered mid-development

Okay< now can somebody explain to me something. In quake e4m4 there is a trick where you should through a grenade under the portal and step on it so the grenade will blow you into the portal. That means that Romero knew about the grenade-jump. So how could he "doesnt know" about rocket jump???

@@_DeadEnd_ Nice! Thanks! Now it became obvious. E4m4 was designed by Sandy Petersen and that grenade-jump exactly led to a secret. Seems like Romero has never managed to find out everything in that map!!!

Bro, I deadass went through the portal by doing that and then reloaded my save because I thought "there's probably a switch somewhere that raises a little cube from this hole in the ground, I'm gonna do it the proper way instead", and ended up giving up...

@@tokeezeno I suppose as Romero said in this video they knew from Doom that rockets could move you backwards but didn't know you could rocketjump in quake. Maybe Sandy Petersen thought well the grenade should move you because its an explosion. By having a small recess in the ground to hold that grenade, if it explodes, it will only propel players up until the portal. This would be common sense to someone that also worked on Doom. Perhaps he designed this secret without knowing the full extent of the physics of what he was doing or he didn't know you could apply it to rocket launchers for full effect. I really doubt though that Sandy made this secret and figured out rocket jumping/nade boosting and chose NOT to tell his colleagues. Honestly, I could see how you could design that secret without realising that rocket jumping is really effective. What is curious as that through all the playtesting Romero or Carmack either didn't know about the secret (dubious assumption) or they did know about the secret and never thought of exploring the concept further than a small push upwards caused by grenade in the ground... Knowing a little bit about the development of Quake perhaps the last levels were really skimped out on QA wise...

Maybe the level designers/playtesters knew but Romero didn't
