Here's British character actor John Sutton (1908-1963) in one of his many roles while under contract to 20th Century-Fox. JANE EYRE (1944) is a competent cinematic adaptation of the classic Charlotte Bronte novel with much professionalism before and behind the camera, including Orson Welles as the brooding Edward Rochester. Mr. Sutton costars with Henry Daniell as the tyrannical schoolmaster Mr. Brocklehurst, child actress Peggy Ann Gardner as Jane Eyre as a child, and an uncredited Elizabeth Taylor as the ill-fated Helen Burns. Mr. Sutton's character is the compassionate Dr. Rivers, a character who was not present in the original novel.

Elizabeth Taylor and Peggy Ann Garner -both so beautiful in totally different ways. Child actors had such an innocence about them at the time....All the different Jane Eyre's and I still think Peggy Ann Garner is my favorite "little Jane". :)

Talk about heartbreaking scene, I always cry when I watch this part. Made my mother see it with me and she bawled her eyes out as well :( I love both child actresses here :( This absolutely captured the spirit of young innocent best friends facing the cruel world together.

Now this is acting, no speciall effects or computerized pixel stuff, just two humans acting out a scen with what nature gave them in talents and what they themself has learned from actingclasses and life. And I who loved the book can actually like the fact that they put in Dr. Rivers in the story even if he wasn't there in the book when they make him so likable and he is played by a actor that actually knows how to act and make a role believable.

I noticed him the first time I watched Jane Eyre eons ago and looked up his name in the credits after. Jane Eyre was the first adult book I ever read when I was ten.

Some of Orson Welles' work, however, is evident in many of the shots and in the opening sequence at Mrs. Reed's. Robert Stevenson's excellent touch was especially evident in the romantic aspects of the "Jane Eyre." He later went on to become THE major director for Walt Disney's live action films, and earned a DGA award nomination for "The Absent-Minded Professor," and nominations for both DGA and and Oscar awards for "Mary Poppins."

@PeterAndres18 It was from a BBC-produced documentary about Renown Films that was included on an ancient Beta videocassette that also included the film with the original American-release opening title. The title was not preceded by Renown Films banner, as the film was released in the U.S. by United Artists. From "George Minter presents" {dissolve into} "Alastair Sim" {dissolve into} "as Scrooge in A CHRISTMAS CAROL" adapted from the story by Charles Dickens. Released by United Artists."

"Jane Eyre" was not originally a 20th Century-Fox film. It was produced by David O. Selznick through an agreement with Orson Welles to bring his Mercury Theatre-on-the-Air radio version to the big screen. Welles had an agreement with Selznick to direct the film as well co-produce. Note in the title credits that with the exception of Fox production executive Bill Goetz, not one regular Fox prduction staff member was associated with this film, only Selznick staff.

Joan Fontaine was under contract to Selznick, and M-G-M loaned both Margaret O'Brien and Elizabeth Taylor (whose name appeared on the original Selznick credits; it had been removed from the Fox credits). One of many of David O. Selznick's major cash problems occurred with this film. Rather than scrap the production, he sold the film to 20th Century-Fox, who put Robert Stevenson as director. Welles was still a producer, but he wanted no credit since he was no longer director.

@BRENDANGCARROLL And so was John Sutton, who appeared in one-line bit parts in THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (as one of King Richard's knights), THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (as the Queen's guard to her private chambers), and THE SEA HAWK (as a herald), Of course, this was before he became a contract player for Fox and was given more prominent roles.

John Sutton can also be heard in both the opening and closing of the 1951 film version of "A Christmas Carol" (a.k.a. "Scrooge") starring Alastair Sim as the off-camera Charles Dickens ("Old Marley was as dead a a door-nail. This must be distinctly understood or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate. The register of his burial was signed by Scrooge, and Scrooge's name was good upon the London Exchange for anything he chose to put his hand to.")

@Noveltooner The narrator of A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951) sounds a bit like Sutton, but the narrator is not credited at all on the film's IMDb page. If I may ask, where did you acquire the source?

When Fox took over the film, however, M-G-M was not going to permit BOTH of its young and coming stars to be associated with a Fox film. Margaret O'Brien was well-established and Adele was a bigger part. Helen Burns, however, dies early in the film and Taylor was due to star in "National Velvet" at M-G-M, so Mayer insisted that her credit be removed.

@Noveltooner The original U.S. end title read at the top in quotes: "A Christmas Carol." In the center it read "THE END" and underneath "Released by United Artists." I might add that even in 1977, the American print of "A Christmas Carol" was in dreadful condition. The current "Scrooge" restoration came courtesy of a complete serviceable negative negative and print discovered in the attic of a house that once belonged to Alastair Sim.

Why is Peggy Ann Garner not even mentioned here? She was "Jane" as a child.

The removal of Elizabeth Taylor's credit from the main titles of the finished film was due mainly to bad blood between 20th Century-Fox studio chief Darryl Zanuck and M-G-M's Louis B. Mayer with Loews head Joseph Schenck. Mayer and Schenck had bankrolled Zanuck into founding 20th Century Pictures which then took over the bankrupt Fox Film studio. From that point on, 20th Century-Fox became full-fledged rival to M-G -M. When Selznick had "Jane Eyre", he borrowed Taylor and O'Brien from M-G-M.
