My favorite Marlowe movie. Not because of the story, but because of Elliott Gould. Listening to this music i can imagine Marlowe running after Eleen's car and she enjoy ignoring him completely. However, he took his sweet revenge in the end and we are left satisfied when she drove to meet Terry and he played his harmonica dancing merrily down the road.

This is perhaps the best I have heard from John Williams - all his other mainstream megahits notwithstanding. Apart from loving the film and this track, I absolutely adore Williams’ imagination the whole picture throughout - as he plays with various versions of this song, now heard by Marlowe on the radio, then played by some piano player somewhere at the bar. Magnificent work

Jack Sheldon died on Friday, and outside of his association with Merv Griffin, this was the only performance of his with which I was familiar... ...and only because, as a hardboiled detective nut, I had to see every Philip Marlowe movie ever made, including the one to which this is the title track (which features a surprisingly effective Elliot Gould as the detective). I had no idea that John Williams had written the music... I wonder if that's him doing the piano work... I have to assume, due to the miracle of sound-on-sound (thank you, Les Paul!) that, in addition to Sheldon's vocal, that's also Sheldon's trumpet-playing we're hearing. Noir, very noir.

Absolutely and totally fabulous. I recently saw The Long Goodbye on the big screen for the first time and I'd forgotten the song. It's one of John Williams' finest and the way it's used in the film - performed by various artists, such as a snippet on the radio - is fantastic. Up there with Nat King Cole's 'I'd rather have the blues than what I've got' from Kiss Me Deadly, which is in some ways a similar film. Though not as similar as The Third Man, which has so many thematic similarities. And both have fantastic theme tunes.

The Long Goodbye (Performed By Jack Sheldon) There's a long goodbye And it happens everyday When some passerby Invites your eye To come her way Even as she smiles A quick hello You've let her go You've let the moment fly Too late you'd turn your head You'd know you've said The long goodbye Can you recognise the pain On some other street Two ppl meet As in a dream Running for a plane Through the rain If the heart is quicker than the eye They could be lovers Until they die It's too late to try When a missed hello Becomes the long goodbye
