My best friend is from Hong Kong. When I first met him many years ago, he used to have negative views on China. That is to be expected as people in Hong Kong were brought up under the British media to think negatively of China. But after many years living in Australia, he completely changed his position on China. And during the height of Trump's trade war with China, he gave up his Apple phone and went and bought a Huawei phone as a symbolic support of China! He, like me, didn't start off on China's side of this debate. We were pushed to China's side by the crazy media in the West.

The following article is written by Ismail Bashmori, he is an Egyptian China watcher. The truth is that China is the greatest country on the face of the earth. It makes all other countries look insignificant and contemptible. It is the most brilliant, most industrious, most ambitious, most educated, meritocratic and technocratic, most modern, sophisticated, and civilised, and best-governed by far. It is the first non-white, non-Western country to reach this status since the 1600s. The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do. 。 It doesn’t matter who we are. Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, even Americans. Next to the Chinese, we are pathetic. We can’t do what they do. We would have a mountain, an Everest of changes to make, and we would whine and bicker and fail at every one of them. China’s story since the 1980s has been one of an almost divine metamorphosis. Next to China the entire Western world from Alaska to New Zealand has stagnated. Next to China the entire developing world from Brazil to Madagascar has progressed only at a crawl. China is the mother of all gargantuan bullet trains. Every day it manages to create something new and astonishing. And unlike the United States, unlike the British Empire, unlike the French, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese or any other Western nation that had its turn at being a superpower in the past four centuries, China doesn’t need to run anybody over or take something from somebody else, to rise majestically. China is also standing up to the West all by herself. The West can’t believe their four-hundred-year-old global supremacy is being challenged. They hoped that the more China developed, the more it would submit to their influence, interests, and leadership. That didn’t happen. So now they will do anything possible, short of a nuclear war, to make China end. Their goal is to destroy this country. That’s why, although the United States has killed several million people and turned several regions of the earth into hellscapes. China is the worst fear of our planet’s Western masters. They want you to despise and dread a country that’s done nothing to you, that hasn’t invaded anyone, bombed or sanctioned anyone, that hasn’t overthrown any foreign government, or used its military on anything since 1979. China is the only major country in the nonwhite developing world, to stand up to the West. To look it in the eye when challenged or threatened. The Global South are simply Western puppets who submitted long ago. Even the most powerful ones. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India. Above only part of the article, you can read the full article under the following link. www.dailyexpress.com.my/read/4459/west-can-t-believe-nor-accept-china-s-progress/?fbclid=IwAR3aJYSZC3rbUgM1NwHCO73XxnNzNkJPa9wrSsFp-4KMxTozuJiHBwLJDXU

Ppl need to be ruled. Not just due to the fact that most people are followers, But due to efficiencies of scale, the world always gravitates toward empire as a scientific fact. Multi polar worlds are no where near as efficient as empire, However empires do tend to abuse their power. Iran is a natural hegemon of the Middle East, China is a natural hegemon of Eurasia, and even possibly the world. The US cannot sustain global empire across the pacific, it’s too energy inefficient.

As a Chinese who observed over the years the "human fallacy" Prof. Mead talked about unfold, let me humbly point out what might be the true human fallacy here. (1) The idea that you can change the ideologies of other nations using military force and coups, rather than following a natural course of development-reform-change. This caused the US to repeatedly engage in useless foreign interferences that disturb a region, adding to its own problems. (2) Nowadays there seems to be a belief in the West that China never changed since 1949 and never "westernized". That is simply not true. In China, even today, most people are greatly impressed by the development of the US (still do) and admire the achievement of the US like people in any other country. Many aspects of our society are modelled after the US (except in some core aspects) or other Western countries (including Japan). (3) The diplomatic idea of "balance of power", which can be traced to 17-18 century European geopolitics, will not help to achieve peace or the long-term interest of the West. Not only will this "balance of power" strategy inevitably clash with "rules based order" but will also bring about dangers of nuclear wars. The once "brilliant idea" of stirring up regional conflicts and reap the benefit as mediator no longer works in a globalized era where everyone stand to lose from such conflicts. (4) The most fundamental fallacy is the belief that the rise of China, India, and other developing countries is a zero-sum threat ("they win, we lose"). One notable fact about China's economic growth from 1978 to 2018 is that it did not come at the cost of Western economies (as Donald Trump seemed to suggest). Instead, it was driven by open sharing of innovations in the West (e.g., computer science, the internet, the automobile industry), the growing consumer market of the West, and the industriousness of its 1 billion labor force. From 2010s, China's economy is also partly driven by indigenous innovations but still greatly reliant on exchanges with Western countries (like Japan and South Korea). Yet political scientists in the West today seems to exaggerate the innovative prowess of East Asian to such a degree that their reaction is more like a panic attack than a rational response. It does not seem to occur to them that to play a zero-sum game (against a player like China), you cannot starve it to death by isolation. Instead, both sides will have to relinquish all the accumulated growth in the past 30 years and rebuild entire economic models (just to replace the parts played by their "opponents"). You must first turn a "win-win" into a "lose-lose". And this is the idea that is being preached everywhere (even in China) and we are truly doomed if no one believes the alternative is possible.

@Christian___
@Christian___ Жыл бұрын
@@udhayakumarMN We're having the discussion in the video precisely because US policy for a generation has been based on a win-win approach. The concern today is that, while western markets have been almost completely open to Chinese, the Chinese have not reciprocated. Further, Chinese innovators can rely on Western authorities to protect their IP rights, but western innovators know that as soon as they contract manufacturers in China, their IP will be stolen. The current situation is lose for the West and win for China--it's not sustainable, especially with China's more aggressive foreign policy under president Xi.
@thefourthrabbit9516
@thefourthrabbit9516 Жыл бұрын
@@Christian___ I completely agree that stable power balancing within a polity is necessary for a rule of law. This is the case in most Western democracies and this is something that is unfortunately absent in China's politics and political philosophy (this would cause periodical troubles within our society, but it is mainly our problem to worry about). But balance at the between-state level is entirely different. Balance of power in a divided world is actually dangerous because it only postpones wars that are potentially far more devastating than wars between unequal powers as both sides will try to win at all costs. In a sense, today's Ukraine is just the lastest victim of this "balance of power" game, which Russia used to its advantage in the past 20 years.

Like the collapse of the Soviet Union under its own weight, the United States' problems are also self-inflicted wounds. The US spends $800 billion on the military annually which is larger than the next 10 countries combined while more than 50% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings and the US government amassed $31 trillion in debt. The US has overreached with 800 military bases around the world. The US foreign policy of interfering in other countries affairs has only resulted in debacle after debacle...the US has fought many wars since the end of WW2 but has nothing to show for it. If the US warmongers are thinking of going to war with Russia and China and at the same time, they are out of their minds! The world has changed, a conventional war (goes nuclear we all die) with China and Russia will not save the US Empire and it will end the US hegemony even faster.

Taiwan's real value to China is the microprocessor manufacturing titan that it is. They start a war there, chances are, they can kiss that asset good-bye, ultimately starting a war that they have a very legitimate chance to lose, only to gain nothing in return. And America has a far better tolerance to the Taiwanese microprocessor industry collapsing than China does. In fact, China acting like Russia did with Ukraine could very well cause the brains behind the Taiwanese microprocessor industry to move to the USA, resulting in China giving up the status quo for an infinitely worse position; Should that happen, China almost immediately ceases to be a power on the global scale. In short, the situation with Taiwan is radically different, and military action regarding Taiwan can only put China in a worse position.

Mead refers to “national security” as the goal of US foreign policy. What does that even mean? Is there a single country in the world with the intent or capability to invade the US mainland? The answer is a resounding NO. Not even close. The Chinese and Russian military are structured for regional conflict. Every other country with a sizeable army is a US ally. It requires foreign military bases to engage in long-distance warfare, the US has 800 military bases and China has 1. So who is the aggressor and who is the defender here? So why does the US NEED global hegemony? This is because the US political and economic system is based on colonial exploitation, not only of Global South countries, but of its own citizens. The US forces the world to trade in the US dollar, so it can buy foreign goods at undervalued prices. It uses its military, regime change and sanctions to overthrow the govt of any country that doesn’t play ball. Despite all of these, the rest of the world is uniting to free themselves from the shackles of US neocolonialism and moving towards a de-dollarised multipolar world. At home, the US has hypnotised its own people with the “American Dream”, so they overlook the fact that they have no affordable access to healthcare or higher education, their infrastructure is crumbling, wages have been stagnant for the past 30 years and 40+ trillion dollars of wealth have been transferred from the bottom 90% to the top 1%. The US political system is ultimately a system of corruption. US elites are afraid that their own people will wake up and see there are better models of governance in the world. Hence the propaganda machine goes into overdrive with nonsense like “national security”.

China didn’t put a gun America’s head to ‘force’ anyone to move their business to China, it’s all done with legal trade agreements. Now the corporations just need to hire lobbyists and politicians to protect them from being targeted, so the easier thing is to blame a foreign country who can defend itself from US dominant international media narrative, if all medias tell the public same lies, the public would believe they ‘must be true’. India, often cited as the next China. I think India needs to sort out various internal and domestic issues before one can seriously consider them as the next China. china has far higher GDP growth and for many years at the early stage of opening up. 1. Corruption - this was a major issue in China and Xi has to actively purge the tigers and flies of corruption. He was accused of using this as a tool to remove his competitor. It was not easy as corruption is widespread and seen as part of a Chinese culture over thousand of years. 2. Protection of domestic industries. This is endemic in India. Hiw often have you seen a successful foreign companies. India is littered with failed foreign investments. The local state will ignore any country wide direction. 3. Education - both general and STEM graduates. China is far ahead even at similar stage of development. 4. Women - equal opportunity and treatment of women in general. You cant ignore almost half of your population. 5. Discrimination / Caste system - liberate your people. 6. Hardwork - more work and less talk. Near the end of the interview Mead makes the extraordinary assertion that India, now the most populous country on earth, has a GDP only 17% as large as China’s. This is a number consistent with the IMF’s estimates for nominal GDPs by countries in 2022. In fact, India’s GDP, based on IMF projections for GDP on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis for 2023, is 39.5% of China’s, or more than double what Meade has said it is. This is really not a contentious subject. The most recent international System of National Accounts manual, dating from 2009, in its section on international comparisons, starts by briefly discussing nominal GDP estimates adjusted to a common currency, pointing to their obvious inadequacies, before switching to the far superior GDP on a PPP basis estimates. It is endorsed not only by the UN, but also by the IMF, the World Bank, the OECD and the European Commission. Meade is not an economist or a statistician, so we should assume that he is genuinely clueless about the proper way to measure economies. It hardly justifies, but partly explains, his neo-con warmonger views on appropriate US foreign policy. In his world, China still has a smaller economy than America’s, although in fact, it has a larger GDP than the US, Mexico and Canada combined. In his world, Russia has the 12th largest economy in the world, when in fact it has the world’s 6th largest economy. (Condoleezza Rice, the former US Secretary of State, and alleged Russia expert, has actually opined that Russia may have the 12th or the 15th largest economy in the world. I am a Canadian, living in the country that actually has the 15th largest economy in the world. It baffles me where that ranking comes from. People who make their living as experts in a particular country generally talk up its importance rather than talking it down. But I digress.) Richard Connolly has noted that Russian military spending never rises above 14% of America’s from 2005 to 2018, while if one converts to necessarily crude PPP estimates, Russian military spending rises to as high as 35% of America’s, in 2016. Meade obviously lives in a world where he thinks Russian military spending is less than half of what it actually is. If we haven’t bullied the Russians into accepting American hegemony, let’s just bully them a little harder. Meade is wrong in thinking that 2014 was the hinge year in international relations since the Cold War ended. The hinge year was 1999 when unindicted war criminal Bill Clinton launched a war of aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a war that ended with the ethnic cleansing of Serbs from the Serbian province of Kosovo, and led to the breakup of the FRY into three states: Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia. This led directly to a previously obscure Kremlin apparatchik named Vladimir Putin becoming president of Russia. Putin was, in a sense, an American creation.

Well, you pointed that out - it is the difference between the nominal GDP and PPP GDP. It is obvious that they refer to the nominal one - where still the US is number one and Russia is 12th and not 6th.
@andrewbaldwin4454
@andrewbaldwin4454 Жыл бұрын
@@sizif717 Kiril, you miss my point, although I think I made it clearly enough: all the major international institutions that matter prefer GDP on a PPP basis to nominal GDP for ranking the economies of countries. If nominal GDP estimates were better, no-one would bother calculating GDP on a PPP basis estimates, because they are costly and time consuming to calculate. It is especially silly to do so in a case like Meade's, where he is trying to get a feel for India's fitness to be an American ally, and its military potential is an issue. There is a strong labour component in military spending and any comparison of the labour component of military spending for China and India based on nominal GDP estimates adjusted to a common currency (by convention, American dollars) is going to exaggerate the spending of the higher-income country, China. This is hardly a theoretical construct. It is exactly what Richard Connolly found in his comparisons of military spending among countries: "The most notable difference between using market exchange rates and PPP exchange rates is seen in the position of India, which in 2018 was comfortably the third largest military spender in the world ($250 billion)." Russia doesn't look like the 12th largest country in the world when it is fighting a war against Ukraine, even though Ukraine is supported by NATO, because it isn't the 12th largest country in the world.

We see the competition in a very different perspective, most distinctively is that we do not believe that competition with great power which will inevitably lead to over extension of power will only weaken your position as a great power, sooner or later. China owes its existence to the US and its allies defeating the Japanese; the Chinese would have struggled to defeat the Japanese on their own, they may have failed altogether. The whole American led post-war order is focused around the UN and living in harmony. In order to do that, states need to conform to expected norms and behaviours. In its history, the US has competed with many great powers--most obviously against the British Empire for its independence, but also against Spain and the Ottoman Empire.

@@Christian___ "The whole American led post war order is focused around the UN and living in harmony" Ha ha ha ha, what an absurd fairy tale. First off, the US has often gone against or ignored UN based international law (see it's sanction policy towards Cuba, which is only supported by one other country). They only side with international law when it suits them. Secondly, the US has often violated the sovereignty of other countries, often via sending the CIA in to create topple leaders (including democratically elected ones). The US led 'harmony' has often been acheived through force, and with a huge cost of lives.

Most news media in Oz present the basic facts in reportage news. It is how they curate the facts in terms of context and disclosure that makes the difference. The astute and informed observer can discern this bias easily. In regard to editorials and opinions pieces, there is the clear divide in Left and Right thinking or the two views of what is happening and what has value. I do not see much difference in the substance of respective opinions between the "Murdoch press" and the Left-orientated press: they are preaching to two different congregations who buy in as the spin appeals to their prejudices.

There's a fundamental difference, at least so far, between the US "supremacy" and the Chinese "supremacy" US supremacy stems out of the old European colonial model of interfacing with the global southl. It's based on domination, exploitation and militarism. Chinese supremacy stems out of it's need for more trade with the global south since the west manufacturers have started leaving China in droves over the past decade due to higher taxes and higher wages and, now, due to supply chain disruptions caused by covid. The global south is much more engaged with China and much more interested in dealing with China because of the nature of the relationship. With China it's more of a peer relationship albeit that China is bigger and stronger. With the US it's more of a vassal to master relationship. The loss of US supremacy is because the global south is running towards China as fast as they can and away from the US as fast as they can (altho' they know they have to watch themselves because of potential repurcussions). The only way for the US and Europe to get back in the ballgame is to start treating the global south the way China does - as trading partners not pseudo-colonies. But, realistically, what's the chance of that happening? A more likely result is that the US will try to act militarily and economically with sanctions. A bad idea, but it's hard for a leopard to change it's spots.

China did not bring all its workers from China. Anywhere China do business, they understand that the locals has to be involved, while learning from them.

I LOVE IT. Xi refused the US from entry into China. He welcomed Macron. But the EU head, he refused Chinese air space to her plane, and she had to reroute and landed 6 hours behind Macron. In addition, no one welcomed her plane. Not even one journalist. She had to go thru the public gates and regular security... Xi doesn't have time for USA. They just want to lecture him about their superiority. He doesn't need US to have economic growth. His allies are South America, Latin America, most African nations, many in Middle East, OPEC and parts of Indo-Pacific. Even Mexico has expressed interest in joining BRICS!

The question I ask is, why can't other countries rise to surpass the US and western allies? They didn't do it by pointing a gun at the West, like what the West did through colonialism, but through thrift and hard work, not mentioning the sacrifices of each generation for the one that follows.

The issue is that the USA can't see how destructive its hegemony has been on the world. The west has not been a good union to further human progress, for every good they have done worse things. We need a multipolar international order.

Introspection requires humility & that's not just an American trait --- In the 30 year period when China's GDP went from $0.4 to $14 trillion and lifted 800 million people out of extreme poverty, the US went from $6 to $21 trillion, an almost identical rise in GDP. Only problem the rise almost exclusively went to the top 1% as wealth of American masses stagnated. If you are a US CEO what you are expected to do is out-source to China, Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam & India. If ANY CEO refuses to do what every other CEO is doing to enhance profits at the expense of working class Americans, he will be replaced with someone willing to sacrifice fellow Americans. John Anderson during the John Howard years had the benefit of 30 YEARS of China... unlike the Norwegians who banked their oil wealth now has a $1.3 TRILLION sovereign wealth fund but Howard & Co gave it back in Tax cuts to buy Howard a 4th term --- so AU was pronounced by the OECD as the most wasteful of Western economies.

I have to say the guest is almost completely wrong in trying to identify lessons learned during the post Soviet period. America did not pay less attention to the world. In fact it increased military expenses many folds in an effort to further boost its hegemony. Look how many wars it has fought since 1991. The problem was the opposite. It got overly confident and didn’t pay enough attention to domestic problems particularly economic problems. In contrast China single minded lay focus on economic development of its own

I would welcome if the USA would focus more on itself. Invading Iraq (illegally) and Afghanistan have not helped those countries. Delivering weapons to the rebels in Syria and Ethiopia has not helped either. Bombing Libya has divided the country, so many people are suffering there now. Inviting Ukraine to NATO against the will of the European NATO members has led to the war in the Ukraine. Ukraine in NATO is for Russia like Soviet nuclear missiles on Cuba for the US. It seems it would benefit the world if US focuses on itself, and are there not enough problems in the US ? You have banks failing , and need to raise your debt ceiling all the time. You do not need 800 military bases all over the world. The US is spending 38% of the worldwide military expenses. The US needs to reduce its debts dramatically to maintain a dominant position in the world. These debts make the US vulnerable.

The West must look at itself critically and reform both in the fields of politics and how its economy(*) is being run exclusively in the mound of neoliberalism. If not the deterioration politically, economically and worse still culturally will continue in the downward trend into the future. In the end, who suffers, the middle and lower classes, whereas the rich and elite upper classes will remain powerful and enjoy their wealth. * I can mention a few AREAS of reform but you would not agree.
