Born and raised Catholic, altar boy, the whole nine yards. And I'm deeply grateful for the foundation I was given in Christianity. Not a big fan of the bureaucracy of the Catholic Church. The current pope's "progressive" Left-wing politics is an inherent contradiction that is not helping the Church's predicament.

The baby boomer generation totally failed to pass on the faith. I was talking to Cardinal Pell about this when he was a priest and he described it best. I was complaining about Catholic education or the lack of it, and the modern approach and he used the expression "they have thrown out the baby with the bath water".

Why might the baby boomer generation in particular not have wished their children to grow up in the Catholic faith, I wonder? What experiences might they or their friends have had that would give them pause before letting their children go to church?

That's rich. Replace WOKE ideology with Xian ideology. No religion is the better path forward, but I will agree that people do identify with "stories". We need to develop better mythologies and stories than the ones we currently have--not ones based on ancient, bronze age texts.

Another example of utter ignorance in the field of comparative religion. Different faiths make different claims, offer different levels of evidence and produce different results…… results which are, themselves, evidence.

Most interesting. It may be that Peterson is able to connect because his empirical foundation has led him to look at the psychological truth of the Chistian story, the reality of evil, and the possibility of redemption through faith. It helps that his authority is charismatic, and he conquered KZbin quite early, but psychology is the key.

Maybe I could see so much more good in it if I wasn't Pascal's Wagered with a bunch of hellfire and brimstone sermons. All I got was 27 years of paranoia. Ever see Paul Vanderklay? He actually interviews nonbelievers and exbelievers. They make points that do match the assumptions of many holy men. I always said that nothibg I ever did could switch on belief. That concept is and was incompressible to nearly every holy man I ever met. Most just replied with thibgs like "it does happen" or "pray harder." Pray harder was absolutely useless to me. It happens? Well it hasn't happenned in the 30 years since I was Pascal's Wagered. I look into Christianity, but for reasons that might not be liked. If the mainstream media hates it, I only have an interest because I hate mainstream media. Some people in these circles say psychology does not matter. I say it matters a great deal. If one can see the various personalitty traits of someone who never gets it, maybe one can deliever the message so such people do. People with Aspergers frequently do not get it. Analyze that kind of personality and fibd a way through. That or keep sending the same message and hope for different results. What are personality traits and genetic proclivites outside some construct from academia? The Southern Baptist Convention gave me a long lasting distaste. So did their adjacents. Both are very common where I live.

Pick anything you value. Anything at all that you value…. If it is a skill, it can get done badly. If it is an action, it can be done selfishly. If it is a thing, it can be made poorly, or counterfeited. None of this proves that things cannot be done well, for the right reasons, and with quality. Christ himself talked about “wolves in sheep’s clothing “. He is the one that phrase comes from, and he was talking about religious “leaders” who did what you describe. He was the first person to use the Greek word “hypocrite” to describe people who say one thing, but do another. He talked about religious leaders who put heavy burdens on people and do nothing to lift them. He condemned them utterly. Maybe you should think about that.
