I had three brothers, the youngest (Mike) with Down Syndrome. Brother number two passed away this January 2023. Today my brother Mike came home singing this song. I played it for him and he sang along (of course only the few words he knows). At the end he told me that he loved me and said he missed his brother very much. I had not been able to cry, hearing Mike sing this song . . . the tears came like a river, meanwhile Mike holding me and assuring me that everything will be okay.

Such a pure and beautiful song reflects the softer days of our lives. I wish my grandchildren could have just a little piece of the sweet life we all had in the 70s before our world had gotten so evil and mean. Breaks my heart they can't walk where we have.

I will never forget being at Disneyland on a hot day in a long serpentine line for one of the rides. Ten year old me in 1971 was feeling cranky. All of a sudden, a hippy in the line somewhere, with an Afro and a tenor voice in the line started singing “Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy….” That caused a lot of us to smile, and made standing in line seems shorter. it changed my attitude. I always think of that experience want to hear this song.

This song is so beautiful. When I first heard this masterpiece on the radio while I was driving to the country about 3 yrs ago. The sun was beaming through the trees onto the landscape, and to have this song come was just so right. I just had to come on YT to check out a live performance with John singing it. I was so richly rewarded by John’s wonderful live performance. John seems so peaceful and relaxed. The lyrics are simple but profound too. And the audience I can see is really into John’s performance, and they’re feeling it. John; gone to soon, but his beautiful legacy of his music will live on for generations to enjoy. RIP John Denver. 🙏🏾🇺🇸

Back in the 70’s I was a teenager wondering about where my life was going to take me, I listened to John, Simon ad Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, Jame Taylor and the like. John’s songs always made me wonder what the world was like outside the Midwest, I dreamed of Colorado picturing in my mind what it would be like to live there. Because of a John I made it my life’s goal and 40 years later my beautiful wife and my two wonderful Children made it, we live in the mountains and John’s music is a big reason why. His music is timeless and changed who I was and am as a person. God bless John and thank you for being a part of the man I became.

I lay next to my father as he passed ,then after giving him thanks for being such a great daddy I had this song come to me and I had to sing it to my daddy , I didn’t understand it but I had to sing it out loud , so I did I was surprised I knew all the lyrics my voice was beautiful, then I kissed my daddy on the forehead and told him I love him and I will miss him . My daughter came in and I told her about the song I had to sing I told her I was amazed I knew all the lyrics and I sang it beautifully she look on her phone at the lyrics sunshine on my shoulders and said mom I know the answer , it wasn’t you singing the song. It was grandpa singing the song to you. Ahhhh I cried and said yes it had to been. 💜

I had the honor of seeing John 4 times throughout his amazing career, the first time in 1974 and the last time in 1994, less than two years before his passing. His influence on my Life, from taking the est Training, to loving the mountains, to becoming a professional musician myself, is something that continues to this very day. Many songs don't sound as good live as they do in the studio because in the studio, they have ideal acoustics and are able to blend in music as well as do many takes until the recording is just right. This version of "Sunshine On My Shoulders" is better than any studio version. Love the flute. It was the highlight of "The Wildlife Concert" set of songs he did.

I saw John Denver in Park City Utah, in the cool evening mountain air. No backup singers, no band, just him. Was something I will never ever forget. He had and beautiful voice given from God. Proof of the gifts and blessings we each are given, I could certainly see John’s gift. He had the whole mountain with people sitting on the beautiful green slopes there, feeling the peace that his voice brought. There will never be another one like him. I miss him very much.

As someone who grew up in the 70s, I was definitely exposed to this song in stores, on the car radio, on a bar jukebox, etc. BUT, it never touched me like today. I'm an independent contractor, and I arrived to my job 15 mins early, so I pulled into a park with a lake under the Arizona sun to wait. The next thing I know this song is played on our local radio station 95.1 The Wow Factor. I finally listened to every word of this song, and I couldn't stop the tears running down my face. I have no explanation why. Was I happy, was I sad? Not sure, but it definitely got me thinking about life. Such a beautiful song that can be interpreted in many ways. Maybe it was that nostalgic feeling that got to me when I least expected it.

A long time ago, when this song first came out...my parents were moving us to a new apartment. It needed painting and even though I was about 13, I really liked to paint and I did a good job, so I would go there an paint the walls...woodwork...etc. I can remember going to the apartment this one day with my good ol'dog named Shorts, windows open, warm summer breeze blowing through, the smell of paint in the air...this song playing on the portable radio...enjoying the day. When I hear this song...I can still smell the paint...still see my best girl Shorts laying there enjoying the day too. I miss that dog. I miss that day. I miss songs like this. Thanks for the memory John Denver. See you on the other side.

When I was growing up in Aspen, Colorado (my hometown), I got to sing with John Denver a couple of times as a kid. I also ran into him while my mother was performing in Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris show in Snowmass Village one summer night that I had gone with her to her performance. This was 1971. I was outside one of the condominiums catching frogs and throwing them in a jacuzzi and John and his wife Annie were walking by heading up the stairs to go see my mother's show when they caught me torturing those poor frogs. I was about eight years old at that time. The two times I got to sing with him were later that summer and then again the following summer when I was nine years old. Those experiences really affected my life and made me interested in music. Anyway, they stopped and John talked to me and convinced me that maybe it would be better if I took the frogs out of the jacuzzi and let them go back to the little stream I had caught them from. I did let them all go and John and Annie thanked me. John asked me where my parents were, and I told him and Annie that my father was dead (my father had died the year before in an accident while on his first "big break" photography job for National Geographic Magazine while he was on assignment in Yellowstone National Park in January of 1970) and that my mother was performing in the Jacques Brel show. They were surprised and said that that's where they were heading and asked me if I wanted to come up to the show with them. I said thank you, but I wanted to stay outside. John made me promise not to throw any more frogs in the jacuzzi, which I promised, and John and Annie told me how sorry they were that I had lost my father and then they left to go see the show.
