My ranking of the Pink Floyd catalogue

Always interesting to see how the ranking of Floyd albums change over the years. Every album has something good we can say about it. I'm of the age, 63, when every album release was an event including the sleeves of course. The laugh we all had in school when Atom Heart Mother came out with the cows cover. My mate who was a farmer's son was over the moon of course. Great discussion John as always.

Always enjoy your stuff John. My first buy on the day of release was Meddle and of course everything after. I think that subliminally I must tend towards your thinking as I didn't buy anything after the Final Cut on the day of release. If I had to take just one Album it would be Animals although I agree that The Wall probably needs to be on the top spot but only because it has much more stuff on it than Animals. I always thought The Final Cut was hugely underrated. I also think that had Roger's Amused To Death album been a Pink Floyd album then it would have been hailed as a masterpiece. As a solo project by Roger it never received the acclaim it deserved. So glad that Animals ended up so high in your ratings John.

Our rankings evolve as we get older. 30 years ago, I would have ranked Animals about #5. Now it's my #1. I started to appreciate The Final Cut more when I considered it a Waters solo album.

Nice list John. This is a good reminder to me to finish off my Floyd collection - I still don't have Meddle (need to rectify that soon) or the three post-Waters albums (maybe some day). I've not listened to Obscured by Clouds in quite a while, and it didn't make much of an impression on me. I'm about to give it another spin and see what I've missed. Thanks.

I agreed completely, especially with Animals, but I have such issues with The Wall. I am not sure why that one strikes me as off the Pink Floyd rails, but it does. It seemed like Pink Floyd gone commercial. I remember fade-outs from songs (possibly just the single) that were just not creative but commercial and other commercial polishing techniques. Sound effects that were just boring compared to previous clarity and integration into the music. Buried instruments where they used to be so clear and piercing. I remember buying it when it came out as I did with all albums after discovering Dark Side and Meddle. The Wall was so popular. But the song on the radio seemed to eschew education during the heart of my college years. My teachers were great, and even when they were bad I felt full freedom to speak out, and this was happening in a government land grant college. I marked it down to some British thing that I did not experience but I still felt that pounding America with that single was just counterproductive in a time of freedom, for me, in education. Education was important and now it is extremely important as we have lost it realistically among "adults" running things here. Here we are today in the USA with thought control that never came from my education but the main continuing education in America, the faux network and all the other abysmal "nonfiction" we were getting as a daily diet in the US. I also did not see the metaphor of "another brick in the wall" as being particularly creative. I was learning about pretty difficult to understand metaphors like "Heart of Darkness" and those of Flanery O'Connor just as examples. Animals, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here? All very nuanced. Intellectually satisfying. Oh, and the cover sucks. I was surprised with the fact that you did not even mention the cover, at least that. :) Anarchy: not everyone's cup of tea. Everyone, and I mean everyone, wanted me to like The Wall at the time. They had just discovered Pink Floyd. Perhaps I could not understand Pink Floyd as a commercial group, I don't know, but none of those people who wanted me to like it probably heard one song off of Animals. Finally, after listening to it a number of times, I gave up and it is 1 of 3 albums I gave away to friends who liked them when I did not. I just pretended it did not exist. I was honestly hung on wondering what your number 1 album would be after Dark and Animals, because you had already done Wish You Were Here, and then it struck me... the one I left out of my collection. Physical Graffiti and Bee Gee's Sgt Pepper soundtrack were the other two I gave away. I see redeeming qualities in all of them but they diverge so far from my conception of the continuity of the groups involved. Teachers! Please teach those kids science. :)

As a huge Barrett fan I have to disagree with Piper at 7; for me, it must be in the top three. Of course, they were a very different band then, so it's quite hard to compare something like Piper to Wish You Were Here or Animals. But the songwriting was top notch, and I think it holds up well.Great list in any case, John, and I certainly agree that Obscured by Clouds is a very strong effort. Thanks.

Agreed. Two years ago the first ranks would have been WYWH, Wall and DSOTM. After intensely listening to the whole catalog, I have to admit, that piper, AHM or Saucerful are brillant, brillant albums. Even "More" has some brillant tracks on it. The Wall, an album I loved as teenager in the 90s has moved down for quite some places.

Good list. The Final Cut should not be ranked as high as #6. Animals is their best record so you were basically right to grapple with almost ranking it #1. The Wall is great, not convinced it is stronger than Dark Side though.

Animals is probably my favourite album ever recorded. After that Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. I used to like Obscured By Clouds a lot many years ago and rank their last 4 albums and Ummagumma at the bottom of the list.

I'm missing a couple, which I have on vinyl but never found on CD: Relics and Masters of Rock. Both of them consist of songs from the early days, some of which were released as singles. I have the complete PF catalogue on vinyl up until A Collection of Great Dance Songs, and have since gotten everything on CD with the exception of The Endless River (I'll pick it up some day--no hurry). My favourite "album" by them is the Pompeii DVD. I absolutely love that period. Meddle and Atom Heart Mother would be higher up on my list, and Wish You Were Here and the Dark Side would be above The Wall and Animals. I wish Richard Wright had not been so laid back in the second half of the 70s. His contributions in the early years, also singing, are a key ingredient of what makes this band so endearing to me.

Great list, really like the top 5, nice to see proper respect being paid to Animals and Wish You Were Here. You can still find reviews of the latter where it's described as a failure, not sure how anyone could think that. Personally, I'm not so keen on The Final Cut, but it could be personal bias against Waters taking over. It's also good to see you rank Ummagumma correctly, for a long time, I thought I was the only one who thought it was pretty ordinary.

Thanks. Always interesting to see other peoples view of these albums. I have always been rather embedded in what I call their mellow period, from Ummagumma up to DSotM, but particuarly Meddle and AHM (those are my top 2), the order of the others has tended to shift around over the years. I was never a fan of The Wall tbh, but I guess mainly because my musical tastes had changed by the time it came out. I love the Barrett album (PatGoD) but tend to view it as almost something by a different band. Also, as you say, Sid's solo efforts are wonderful.

Nice to see Final Cut riding quite high in your rankings. I think it's an under appreciated masterpiece, so poignant and some of Rogers best lyrics. Animals steals top spot for me. Gilmour is on fire on this album! The Wall a close second. Thanks for the consistently great content John

“Obscured By Clouds” has been in heavy rotation and is one of my favorites and I agree with you on this album with two exceptions. The first is that I love “Absolutely Curtains” and the second is that although ObC’s release date was before DSoM, its recording was actually bookended by the recording of DSoM which Pink Floyd had been playing in public starting towards the end of 1971.

Great video. My top three in order 1,2,3 Animals (David and Rick’s finest hours), Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon. I pretty much play these on repeat. I agree in Ummagumma but the live set is excellent. After these 3 it’s Meddle except for the football chant, and then Division Bell. The rest for me come and go. Relics is a good summary of the best of the rest. Apart from a couple of tracks (Run Like Hell, Hey You, Mother and Comfortably Numb), The Wall and the Final cut (Wall outtakes) don’t do anything for me. That court room section sounds like a Lloyd Webber musical. Without Mason can you really call either Pink Floyd albums? We all have our favourites - and the reason I love WYWH and Animals at the top is because i bought them on the day of each release. So for me they have so many great memories. Tanks for sharing.

By the way, I liked how you consistently referred to David Gilmour as 'Gilmour' in this video, whereas Roger Waters was always 'Roger'. Nice touch.

i love st. tropeez!! takes me to a place of prosaicism when i'm in a really bad mood. i know they shrugged that song off, later (i think) but i love those kinds of songs. just like "cry, baby, cry" which lennon said was one of his least fav lyrics but that song does it for me--an unpretentious type song that won't make waves . . .

Great stuff John.i didnt realise Pink Floyd were together in 1881 (or even that you were alive rhen) but hey what do I know! Can't quibble too much with your choices too much though would probably have Meddle higher personally. I think you always had a slight favouring of the Roger heavy input rather than the Dave/Rick heavier pieces. Overall it's a very strong output with possibly only the bottom 5 being short of classic status.

I always preferred the single songs . My favorites are See Emily play, Arnold Lane, Bike, crazy diamond, breathe and Us and them. Relics is a brilliant compilation which I wore out. Obviously not listed here. Good honest review. I sold my Umma Gumma . Glad to be rid of it .

Pretty much in agreement. Certainly I think the Wall is outstanding as an album of all time. For me though, the Wall is not ab out the songs but the story. The story is greater than the sum of the parts. My only real niggle is Momentary Lapse of Reason which I would place higher than Division Bell. Nice job, sir!

Good review John, and nice to see that "Dark Side" did not automatically take the No 1 Spot. I have always thought that "Wish You were Here" was the better album. Saw Roger Waters interviewed about Roy Harper taking the lead vocal on "Have a cigar" He was not a happy boy! Said he would have ,"nailed it eventually". No Rog you wouldn't, your voice is not strong enough, and Roy Harper is a quality vocalist.. I think that that Mr Harper was mate's with David Gimour which would probaly not endeared him to Waters.

I would have WYWH, Animals, and ObC ahead of Dark Side, but the albums are so damned good over this period tells you just how good this band was.

Nice job, very honest. I have different opinions on some of them of course, "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" gets flak for having so many people working on it but Gilmour was a lot more generous with credits than Waters ever was. For me it SOUNDS a lot more like a PF album than "The Wall" or "The Final Cut". I'd put "Meddle" above "Obscured by Clouds" and "Atom Heart Mother" would be lower, I don't think they used the orchestra and chorus very well. I only like about half of "The Wall" which is as much a collaboration album as "Momentary Lapse" is, The Trial section is silly to me. It works much better as a film soundtrack. Agree totally on "Umma Gumma" and the last one, unnecessary albums.

I understand your feelings about the post Waters Floyd but I would have Division Bell higher . High Hopes is one of my very favourite tracks and Cluster One the interaction between Dave and Rick is just beautiful, again one of my favourite pieces of music. For me Dark Side is No 1 closely followed by Wish You were here with Animals 3rd. In January I saw the UK Pink Floyd experience and they are fantastic , superb 3 hour set and did the whole Dark Side album from start to finish. Dark Side of the Moon justifiably ranks as one of the greatest ever by any band.

Nice list. A few of my opinions differ from yours - especially in the top 4, but that is ok. I especially like that you said when Roger left Pink Floyd wasn't really the same. I agree. I believe at their height, Roger's writing and lyrics coupled with David's playing cemented them into eternity as some of the best, most creative music of all time. Their music in my opinion wasn't just genius and unique but had a genius and unique message. I found it interesting that you seem to appreciate Roger's lyrics founded on strong anti establishment and anti war sentiment but then you said politically you don't always or often agree with what Roger's singing about. I find that puzzling.

Well done putting Umma Gumma so low. Me too. But I am much more pro Saucer full of Secrets. Yes less good than Pipers of course but for me their strongest until 'Meddle'. I love that LP also so much more than you do. It is my favorite except for DSOTM, WYHW and up there with Animals. Being my 3rd favorite. I think it is because you like Roger so much more than I do. Atom Heart Mother is far less good than Meddle .Not even close. I love Pipers at 5th. I love Syd Barrett like you very but I prefer the more coherent 'Barrett' to 'Mad Cap laughs which while very atmospheric seem to pride itself trying to make Syd look messed up as Syd felt. Interesting to hear how different your opinions are!

I've really grown to love Animals over the past couple of years. I didn't like it until I found some live show bootlegs. That's when I first felt the energy of those songs. The only one in your list that made me raise my eyebrows was the placement of The Final Cut. I remember standing in the shop holding Atom Heart Mother and The Final Cut in my hands. I had no idea what was on either of them so I randomly picked The Final Cut. I wanted something spacey and dreamy, and the Final Cut is anything but. I was so disappointed when I got home and listened. Not sure I have ever listened to it again. Maybe I should revisit it one of these days.

There's nothing like a few hours in a car to be able to really absorb an album. This video inspired me to listen through the PF catalog again. I hope to gain a new appreciation for The Final Cut.

Amazing how Animals has climbed in stature over the years, it wasn’t the case when it was released. It’s in my top four but there are eight or nine of these albums that are in my top fifteen by any band.

Pink Floyd albums and their places on peoples' "lists", imho depends on when that person was born. For instance, hearing "See Emily Play" for the first time on the radio when you are 16, and all your school friends raving about "Piper", had a big impact. Then you follow them through (including Relics and Masters Of Rock) Saucerful/Atom Heart/ Meddle/Clouds/Darkside/Wish You Were Here, during college years. By then I had had enough and had moved on to other interesting albums. I have never heard "Animals". You had to buy the album to hear it, and by then I was more interested in more innovative bands. Maybe I was influenced by Fripp who wound up Crimson and said that bands like that, including Pink Floyd had become dinosaurs. Having said that I do love 'Comfortably Numb', but that is an exception. I did buy" Final Cut" out of interest, and heard the strangulated singing, the whining and Roger still referencing his dad after x number of albums, and reckoned Fripp had been right. As John says, it's all very subjective.

I think that The Wall was always going to be a sound track for the movie, not just a stand alone, studio album. The reason I like the album is, while aided by the movie scenes, you really get deep into Waters' brain. When you hear Gilmour sing the last part of the verse from the song "Wish You Were Here"(from the album of the same name)- "and did you exchange the walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage," you really feel the angst of a guy, celebrated for being a rock star, only to be over-shadowed by the hero's death of his own Father that he never knew! The Wall is just a continuation of that thought. In an interview I've seen on YT, Roger admits he'd prefer the walk-on part in the war.

The Final Cut has aged rather better than many other Floyds. Superbly produced and much more than just a The Wall off cuts and mopping up effort. Despite the internecine strife Gilmour contributes perhaps 3 or 4 of his best solos. Lyrically it is Waters at his best. Animals is musically their best album with Wish You Were Here a close second. Dark Side conceptually their strongest and a landmark in recording standards. Such an important band. I think Pipet should be higher - perhaps top 7.

I'll never understand why people rank The Wall so highly. It has some amazing songs, but it's not an album I enjoy listening to in its entirety. For me, my top five albums are probably Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, Meddle, and then possibly The Wall.

@@RobScuremusic. Dark side is literally music for taking trips. The wall has much better individual songs, and the story is great. The only good things to come out of dark side are the cover, "time" and "money" . The rest are just boring instrumental tracks.

Can't argue with your choices. For me, Animals is my favourite so I'm pleased you put it so high. You seem to know what is obviously good and what isn't. Same with the Beatles albums. It isn't rocket science in my view.

I have such an incredibly hard time rating final cut before AHM and Meddle and even Division bell. In each of those albums I found something that I liked. And liked a lot. But I couldn't even force myself to like much about final cut. There wasn't a track I found that wasn't whiney or derivative of the wall (and derivative in a much worse way)

Thank you for the discusssion ! When it comes to Pink Floyd the one I always want to hear is Meddle, so I would say this is my favorite. Then Animals, Wish you were here and Atom Heart Mother. I hate The Wall : arrangements are horrible, singing is horrible and it makes me anxious everytime I hear it !

I too like Syd's solo work more than half of the group albums. I agree with John on a whole lot of the details but not on many of the album rankings. IMHO: 1) AHM - no dross 2) Meddle - points off for Seamus & granny music st. tropez, echoes probably Floyd's zenith 3) DSOTM - money and other spots are commercial 4) Saucerful - points off for seesaw cause its too long, more light too much like overdrive 5) Ummagumma - points off for vizier and sysyphus 6) Animals - a bit empty, too long in parts, Floyd ends here 7) Piper - points off for interstellar, stethescope, Lucifer Sam, powr toc h 8) WYWH - kinda boring and pompous 9) More - spotty, soundtracky 10) Obscured by Clouds - spotty / kinda commercial 11) Wall - most overrated and indulgent, not really a Floyd album 12) Final Cut - only three good cuts, not really a Floyd album 13) Division Bell - dross 14) Momentary Lapse - dross 15) Endless River - dross

Not sure how I found this channel. Does KZbin suggest based on what you watch? Anyway, am really liking John, and watching his videos, even of Dylan, of whom I have never been a fan. But I may reconsider, based on John’s strong admiration. John is same age as my baby brother, who likes the Beatles and Stones, but is more into those metal bands of his era like Metallica, AC/DC, Rush, etc., who I also never got into. Have a couple questions: 1) Why is John so into vinyl and different pressings? 2) What is he doing in Belgrade or Prague, or wherever he’s at? Regarding Pink Floyd, don’t think anything can top Dark Side of the Moon. In my view, one of all-time best rock albums. Do like songs on other Floyd albums. Think Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a masterpiece. Saw Pink Floyd once in early 70s, was very high, and had very weird experience both at the concert and driving home. Roger Waters is becoming more visible politically, is interesting to watch, has large ego, and is kind of bigger than life. P.S. Has John never gotten into Moody Blues?

If you love vinyl, you inevitably get into the different releases, at least as a Beatles fan, I do. It is a collector's trait. I'm not sure how old you are but in the days vinyl albums were released as the main form, you sat there listening, staring at the cover, or gatefold, or poster, or whatever. For instance "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is not the name of the vinyl release. So, had you been there, physically purchasing the album, and putting the needle down, You would hear "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome to the Machine" sandwiched between the parts. I have seen edits where it is all together in one song, and I believe it began that way in the creative process. The single from the album that they thought everyone would like and represent the album? Double A side "Have a Cigar" / "Welcome to the Machine". So, the physical properties of vinyl , 33 and 45, and packages are fairly important. And if you collect, it is always fun just to have one more version.

@@MichaelDeVore2 I am old enough to have bought vinyl albums myself. Back then, record stores were kind of like hangouts. I knew the people who worked in them in my hometown. My mother was a music lover, and she liked to buy 45s. We had 45s of the Beatles first hits when they first came out. I fully know the experience of looking at the album covers while listening to the record. I either sold or gave away all of my albums when I moved out of state many years ago. Since then, it's just been easier to buy CDs. I see people getting back into vinyl, and I have considered getting a turntable again, but am not sure I want to put the money and effort into buying records of music I love. I have a lot of CDs.

Long discussions can be had on this one. For me anything past the final cut (and to some extent even including the final cut which for me IS a Roger Waters solo album) does not count. For me Dark side is no. 1, because it personally lifts me every time I listen to it. Time and Us and Them remain the best lyrics written by Waters. Political and engaging lyrics can be found in all other albums but this is something else. It’s about being human to the very essence.
