I met John once when I used to work for Sony Music. The dude took the time to meet record label staff before his gigs. And he'd hang. No rush. He'd ask you questions and try get to know you. I liked that about him, he was genuine. Anyway, I fell in love with him from that point on and really got into his albums and this became my fav song of his.

Hey Abhinav - as a guitarist for almost 50 years now, I 100% agree with you - simply beautiful, understated, lyrical and utterly perfect for that moment in the song. This is why people should be inspired by their guitar heroes but always cut their own path and NOT try and imitate their sound and style. Sure I've "stolen" licks and ideas from all the greats, Mayer included, but there is a saying that "comparison is the thief of joy" which always rings true to me. I can never be Hendrix, Page or Mayer - I can only be me, just like they could never be Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters or BB King. Mayer is a true great of modern blues. I was 19 and when I first heard Continuum I knew it was great, but took me until now, 33 years old, to really appreciate how diverse he is as a musician. Few artists actually go out and try something new or different. And by John Mayer doing that he has created everything from pop to folk to blues to country tunes. And they are all great because that man knows how to write great songs. You can be a guitar virtuoso, which he is, but you have to be able to write great songs. He stays true to himself via the music and in his song writing. And i am a life long fan.

My favourite version of this song. The gold standard. Every live version is different and nuanced with alternate solos and feel. This earlier version with the Strat is simply the best. Mayer is the most talented guitarist of his generation and a great songwriter.

John Mayer is far from beeing unrerrated. Ask Clapton, Buddy Guy, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys or any muscian out there.

He may not be underrated among fellow musicians but he's sure as hell underrated by the average person.

I totally agree with how amazing he is, However I wouldn't say under rated by any stretch of the imagination. Everyone knows this man, he's played with BB King and many others. He's doing well for himself. As he very well should. There is one pretty underrated guitarist I know who deserves more credit, and his name is Rabea Massad. Look up some of his 10-15min jams with his friends on youtube. He does a lot of stuff I love with blues and rock. Not a real big fan of his metal stuff, but to each his own, he's still awesome.

I don't have any musical ability at all.....wish I did. Whether that makes me more in awe of those that have I don't know. But I do know what music moves me and here it is -John Mayer the absolute master.

I'd like to had seen Prince and John Mayer perform a duo, then have them play alternating solo's. Both being great performers not just behind a mic, but their ability to make their guitars gently weep.

if you've ever been in one of these relationship where you know you're sinking and theres no way around it, but you still want to be with the other person so much, mayer captured that feeling from 5:44 to 6:15. man, i dont know how he does it but his sound isnt just sound, it's pure feelings.

reasonably positive that he improvised the solo - nothing crafted about it.. watch live in LA version of same song for a carefully crafted solo... this is the shittiest recording of this song imo.. and i love mayer

Everything is about capturing your audience and giving them that little extra that goes right into the soul and John does that with his guitar. He is a virtuoso who always knows where he is going and plays with such perfection that he is absolutely one of the best of all time.

I wonder if people in the audience realized what they were witnessing in this performance? This is one of the most stylishly masterful, technically magnificent, live guitar performances ever captured. Clapton, the greats...anyone who plays would agree...after they picked their collective jaw up off the ground....I guarantee. Think what you will about the man or his celebrity or whatever - but there aren't any left like this. Just had to be said. Carry on with your day.

I went and saw John Mayer recently and afterwards I had a conversation with my father about how he stacks up with some of the greats. We both agreed that not only is he up there with Clapton, Hendricks, Paige, etc., but he's probably the last one of their kind. No one does this shit anymore.
