You can't compare an 18k collectors item with a 2k player item. It's shaping the argument so you can dunk on Gibson. Compare this guitar to a strat style in its bracket, as well. Comparing a strat to an lp is like comparing a car to a truck. They are both automobiles, but shaped different and have different value to different people. Enjoy your car, and let people who want glamour trucks buy glamour trucks.

@@iamjaktI mean yes you are correct, any guitar above 2k either better have a very specific purpose, push some new really great tech in the guitar world, or be a collector type guitar imo. So comparing something 5x more expensive in this case, it is totally a status or collector thing (which I also find to just be status thinly veiled in a “hobby” 😂 but that’s a whole other personal opinion side tangent) vs someone looking for an extremely solid guitar focused on playing and not aesthetics. That said though I think comparing guitars in the same price range, regardless of type is valid. So a 2k ish Gibson should be the comparison really.

If an Ibanez made in Japan is worth 2gs why not a Yamaha. I just don't know if the Indonesian model is worth the 1200 when the labour cost is a fifth of Japan's 🤷🏽‍♂️, but the price is the price.

Material costs are still the same and it doesn't seem to cheap out on anything. That being said, there are plenty of Ibanez Premiums that undercut that price point with comparable specs. But if Yamaha's Indonesian division has done just as good a job as Ibanez's, they may be worth a shot.

I don't know if it's the guitar and how it pulls you to play or just the overall signal chain but you really get some vintage Neal Schon tones every time you record yourself playing that guitar. I've always been a big fan of his and constantly try to get that sound. I'd happily pay $2,000 for one of those guitars, just like I paid $7,000 for a Yamaha saxophone. Hello, this is Doc. The 112, 311,510,611 etc all had necks that feel narrowed somewhat, almost thin? I belive the necks on these new boys are very comfortable, but I might not be the best person to ask, I believe you can get used to any neck, within reason, and I like all of them. I recently got an AES 820 that I didn't like the carve on at first... But the more I play it, the more I like it.

@@southwestshooters cheers for taking the time out to reply. I have an old late 90s 302s tele Pacifica which has a narrow and slim C style neck. I also have a RGX112 for mid 90s, my first half decent guitar, which has a thicker C shape neck compared to the Pacifica. Then a couple of years ago I bought a 112vcx all black locally, as it was cheap and I wanted to check them out. For a Pacifica it has quite a bigger C neck, plus the back of the neck is polycoated like the body. Strange for a Pacifica series guitar as most have plain wood finished necks. I plan to take some measurements of the neck in the future and share them.

The neck pickup is much closer to the bridge than the Fender, so the sound will be different and in general the neck and middle pickup are very close... This is due to the design that initially included 22 frets, unlike the Fender where all necks with 22 frets are structurally the same as with 21 frets simply make a step. Fender did just that so that he didn't have to move the neck pickup! but Yamaha didn't

The 41 mm nut width I've always seen as one of the things that make the Pacifica the Pacifica. These seem to have a wider nut which if true, is a decision I don't like. I do like the stylistic changes and the finishes are fine but overall it's not exciting enough. I'd rather buy a cheaper Pacifica for a few hundred and then have it customized to my liking.

I think the new pacificas are cool and adequately priced. I really like the look. I also believe Japanese made guitars are usually superior to Fender and Gibson US made. Only, I think you can get specs like this and more if you know what you’re doing with Warmoth or other quality partscaster. The key is knowing what you’re doing and quality parts. You can build for less. But you have to settle for a fender body style and put it together yourself, so it’s up to you.

Don't forget the amount of research and development on the vibration and tonal analysis on the body and neck, and the time it took for the pickups to reach the sound that they need (3 years man, that was a huge investment). These efforts cost more money and time than you might think. So I believe along with the construct design it is very much worth the price

For a model that is meant to compete with the likes of Fender's American Ultra Strats, I'd argue they definitely offer a compelling alternative at a slightly lower price. And thanks to the features, it also offers better value than the Professional II. That being said, I think Ibanez still has them beat because their AZ Prestige models offer a lot more variety in terms of specs and pickups in that price range. Their roasted maple necks and bigger frets are a welcome feature even without the compound radius fretboard. The cutaway and heel sculpt is more comfortable on the Ibanez too imo. Furthermore, the variety of pickup configurations ranging from two high-output Hyperions to an HSS setup with smooth Fortunas have you covered no matter what you're looking to play, which is further expanded by all of the alternative coil-splitting modes. While the Pacifica is the best classic Strat deal you can get on the market, the AZ is still the most advanced Strat you can pick up in that price range.

And I could totally see the Gospel, R&B, Lofi, Alternative, Indies genres loving Bad Cat amps and Yamaha Pacificas, PRS and Heritage. Not saying people will ever stop loving Gibson and fender. Just saying that the actual song writers and stars of the future are kids who can’t afford to pretend to be Eric Clapton and John Mayers. There was nothing about the name on the headstock that had me salivating about the potential resale of my 1995 Japanese Pacifica 904. I kept it through multiple acquisitions of Fender Strats over the year simply because it was a superior guitar. Mine is number 51 of 500 made that year. And if John is right Yamaha may stick to the limited production Japanese model. Finally, someone gets it. Great comment. Not that the Professional is solely a marketing “decoy”, as some claim, it’s just that Yamaha knows what they’re doing and what their expectations are. They’ll have their Japanese luthiers hand assemble however much demand there is for Professionals, and they’re incredible instruments if you own one (I’ve got a Revstar pro). But it’s funny how many people say “Yamaha is going to lose money on the Pros”, as if they are going to accidentally overproduce them in mass from a Japanese factory. Edit: grammar typo

Ofcourse there will always be guitar snobs. But in every price category Yamaha is up with the best. And they also make ‘upmarket’ products for a very long time. If you’re into guitars you know. Santana played Yamaha for a long time. There is a Mike Stern guitar, there’s top bass guitars and even concert piano’s. I bought a Yamaha Revstar RSP20 and it is a brilliant guitar. I sold my USA PRS S2 Custom 24 because I have not touched it since I have the Yamaha. The PRS is the same buildquality but the RSP20 sounds better. If you want a Gibson that is build that well you will need to spend more than €4000. And you probably still have a less stable and sturdy instrument. Also the Yamaha Pacifica FM612 VIIFM is a guitar that absolutely crushes guitars in the €800-1000 price range. So I would sooner doubt If a Les Paul is worth €4000 than ask the same question about a €2000 Yamaha. This is my opinion as a player, not a collector. If you judge guitars by their quality and just play them you look at different things and can eliminate your inner guitar snob.

I think the Floyd rose these days is a bit of a niche that is pretty well covered by Charvel, Jackson, Ibanez etc? Perhaps if they reissued the RGX it would make sense, but it seems the Ibanez AZ and Suhr Classic etc might be catering to a bit of a broader player base?
@jody7214
@jody7214 5 ай бұрын
@@johnnathancordyI get it. I just wish they made a Floyd option with this latest line because I think there is a market for that now as well. The “Super Strat” was born out of the era when that’s what players were looking for, HSS configuration WITH a Floyd. That’s specifically how Charvel/Jackson came into existence. They were luthiers that were modding strats for players of that era. Trying to blend a Strat and a Les Paul with a trem that would stay in tune when abused. The Pacifica started off with an hss and Floyd configuration and was that way for years. Only in the past 20-25 years was it downgraded to an “entry level” guitar because Yamaha understood that that could be a better market for them at the time. They couldn’t compete with the Charvel/Jacksons in the American market. The original Pacificas were premium, premium guitars in my opinion. (Everything Yamaha makes is quality) They were a unique take on what everyone else was doing at the time. Very similar to what Hamer was doing with their super Strat designs and quality. To me, the Ibanez AZ, Suhr Classic, Music Man Cutlass, etc are just SS copies for people that don’t like Floyd’s, which I get. Also, just look what the Super Strat/Floyd combination did for Ibanez’s business since the 80’s. Sorry for the long post, I just love these topics. Love your videos and especially your playing!

Pacifica will drop the price very quickly...beleive me!No guitar should cost thousands unless it's hand built by a luthier.

Totally agree. You could buy a NOS Pacifica 612 for 550$ and a NOS Yamaha Revstar with P90 pickups for another 550. Thats 1100 bucks and you still have plenty of cash for a budget modeller like a Hotone Ampero and a couple of budget active speakers like Alto TX312s for running them in stereo.

If yamaha is trying to increase the value of their brand and create a flagship model, I don't think the professional model has enough specs. We live in an era when a Korean brand Indonesian-made guitar with compound radius, stainless steel frets, and 24-fret roasted neck can be bought for the $600s. I think the flagship needs a ridiculously high spec, like a v12 engine or a top speed of 300km/h in a car.

As much as I dislike flat finishes, the finish on the custom shop model really highlights the carves on the body. Definitely has piqued my interest. Now I just hope my local dealer intends on stocking them.

Nothing wrong with bolt-on necks, my friends. For those who think $2 bills is outlandish, consider other manufacturers and custom builders charging far more…but, that said, I see no downside paying considerably less for the Indonesian model. The neck difference is negligible.

1,999.99 would put it against Gibson, PRS and Fender as the only choice price for value. Given it comes with a hard shell case, literally custom wound designed pickups. Its still a great guitar for the money. Is it better value then a MIJ Ibanez rg 550? probably, is it 1200 better than MIJ RG 550 no. Still its a great proposition v.s. the big brands with poor QC.

Yamaha would be smart to make a headless guitar right now with a whammy bar since Ibanez doesn't have one with a whammy and since Strandberg have a neck that not everyone likes.

They are fairly priced for what you get in terms of specs and some interesting pickups. I think they should be slightly cheaper as the Yamaha brand will not pull as many folks as Fender or Ibanez, who are direct competitors in that modern Strat vibe. But it’s more of marketing point.

I have to agree that Yamaha made great value in the Revstar range but this seems way overpriced, would choose a 2nd hand Suhr over this everyday over a £2000 yamaha pacifica, sorry and I have a Revstar standard

The problem for them will be getting people to pay $2k for a Yamaha. Too many other choices in that price range. Why not just cut the price in half and compete? A compound radius isn't worth $1200 extra.

Unless it's handbuilt by a luthier no guitar should cost thousands because they are mostly mass produced in the same factory . You can guarantee the workers in the factories do not see those mark ups .

The real elephant is the prices that guitars are reaching. It's a post covid and post raw material crisis mess. These prices are outrageous in my opinion. Guitar makers will not go back to pre-crisis prices and will get us consumers used to these blown up costs, increasing their margins by loads. Just my two cents 😊

All those other products they design, create and sell... I mean OF COURSE they're gonna give you quality. It's obvious now that I think of it. It's the YAMAHA empire, man...

No, I wouldn’t pay $2000 for a mass produced Japanese Pacifica. I’d go for a used Suhr at that price, or buy a less expensive FGN or Vola if buying a brand new Japanese made guitar.

I'm not sure the Japanese factory is necessarily churning out huge production numbers - based on the japanese Revstars, those don't seem to be that easy to get? I wouldn't be surprised if Suhr make greater quantities of guitars? Great stuff though, and like you suggest a used Suhr could be great value.

No. How do these companies justify charging $2000. for a slab body , bolt on neck? Another CAD cut Strat style guitar with a few stainless steel frets, made in Asia. Looks and sounds like more guitar corporation snake oil to me. It is not just Yamaha but, all the guitar manufacturers seem to be trying to make up for the losses from the baby boomers leaving the market place.
