In today's episode, it's the last Ratchet game for the Playstation 2, and man, where'd all the platforming go? Things seem dire, but that's kinda the whole point with this one.

Insomniac is too busy to experiment with the series anymore, I doubt it'd be viable these days and barely was in 2011-2012. Hell it's a miracle they give enough of a fuck to still want to continue the series; *especially* now as I feel the last era of the series will be the PS5. Also I consider this game half spin-off due to it sharing a lot of key aspects to UYA.

Yeah just like the HD collection. i never really thought of this one as an actual R&C game, it just seemed like nothing but the battle arena with more multiplayer, so it's actually like the ONLY one i haven't played and i still don't think i need to. like a few years back i went though the series playing what i missed since R&C:UYA was my first and i still skipped this one, i went straight to the ps3 titles though i did also play the psp one a smaller ones since they looked like actual R&C games just shorter

Hearing that it was initially going to be a racing game does make me wonder how much of that original concept was done? Especially as mentioned in this video the Indian shows a couple of characters that you’ve never known before and would only see their names on the leaderboard. Makes me wonder if they were going to be big racers in the game so they had more of a part. But when the game switched to battle arena style they were cut. That’s just my theory though. But overall I always like the Battle Arena segments in The ratchet and clank games so having a game that was basically one giant battle arena was really fun for me and fortunately the two announcers didn’t annoy me nearly as much as apparently it did Johnny.

I'm kind of glad that Johnny shared my thoughts on the story. Every villian, minus Ace, were just so one note, Dallas and Juanita were obnoxious(Juanita more so, cause Dallas can be FUNNY with his insults, but I think they wanted to tie Juanita back to the "Destroy all Squishies" stuff from UYA, which...came off more as Bitch-ish than funny). I am sad to hear you didn't like the flair, or commented on how obnoxious it is to get all the skill points in this game.
@OneTrueNobody
@OneTrueNobody 2 жыл бұрын
Juanita is more of a satirical figure: she's the highly professional and dignified female broadcast personality who has to deal with her male counterpart being a complete sexually-harassing heel. The joke is maybe overdone like everything involving Dallas and Juanita, but it's very intentionally tied into the satirical themes of the DreadZone story: the idea of a big media company turning a blind eye to obvious harassment and unprofessional behavior by their male broadcast personalities is just another real-world thing the game does social commentary on. I think it's even an issue that can be found in Fox News's history, which might be why they chose it for the Vox Network. The decision to have Juanita be a robot MIGHT play into the symbolism, since it kind of underlines the intentional artificiality of her conventional good looks and professional demeanor. But then again, that might also just be coincidental.

meh, for me personally, i think a dmc vergil style game would fit shadow much more, i mean come on, chaos control as darkslayer style, chaos spears as summoned sword, chaos form as devil trigger, chaos blast punches and jet-boot kicks as beowulf, maybe even go full archie and give shadow a melee chaos spear to attack with like the newly introduced mirage edge, it would be perfect in my opinion. if you want a ratchet and clank style sonic game, then tails already exists and it fits him much better than shadow. at least in my opinion.

@@alimowla3204 I mean, sure, if they wanted to take the character action route then I would love your idea too. It’s why I’d love to see Platinum take the challenge at some point considering they’ve worked with SEGA multiple times. The thing is, they settled on guns *specifically* and the Ratchet series (especially Deadlocked’s explosive, over the top combat and dark aesthetic) shows that you can do much better than just… Sonic Heroes with realistic weaponry randomly thrown in the stages and a mission-based structure.
@lugbzurg8987
@lugbzurg8987 2 жыл бұрын
If Tails were getting R&C-inspired gameplay, I think gearing it more like the original would suit him better than, say, the more shooter-first emphasis of R&C3 onwards. I've seen the weapons of the original described as platformer power-ups you can use indefinitely. You had to be more thoughtful about how you used your weapons. They were more tools than killing machines. Plus, there were so many wacky gadgets for a plethora of scenarios.

I agree a look at furthering the combat for one title was fine not that direction the rest of the series. It's why I don't hate that All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault exist they wanted to experiment I'm fine with that they did the main three besides the core gameplay. The mod system is awesome I wish they brought it back I hate the Rarititanium skill tree personally. That and the moon's from crack in time. It's the combo of ideas I want but they seem to not implement them I assume due to effort to code/thinking fans want the same old but to me the same old was never Tools of Destruction ideas that's for sure. Deadlocked is just fun to 100% too I find no need to but it's fun to me. All the jackpot containers, skill points, 100 level weapons so good. But obviously for 1 title. Wouldn't want it going this way or it would get boring and the quality change I expect to not be great and the platforming makes the series interesting not just action all the time even if the bots add a fair amount to situations even if the level design is multiplayer maps used fairly well but not as great as others.

There's some interesting stuff about Deadlocked I found while playing and thought would be cool to share. - Shellshock is the only Exterminator you fight 3 seperate times and on a unique planet. The rest are fought once on Dreadzone. Likely a sign of the short development. - Merc and Green, your companions, once had legs. But devs realised how much more akward it made traversing the levels, so they made them hover. Green has a line about having his legs blown off as a nod to this. - There was originally going to be a Lombax character in the game. I think they were smart to scrap this for later. - Stygia and Ghost Station are the 2 last levels before the finale that also happen to have their own introductory cutscene which other levels dont get.

“Halo inspired” would far more suit the games that came after the original Trilogy/Deadlock. If you really want a good in depth look at the dev history behind Deadlocked, I wholeheartedly recommend checking out The Golden Bolts video on it. The game was originally planned to be more in line with Halo with large open-ended missions before they decided to split all the planets up into smaller challenges since it would be more manageable for the enemy AI. Clank was also seemingly going to be kidnapped by Vox in the Ghost Station according to a cutscene that can still be found in the files. At one point in the game, there was going to be a Lombax character like Ratchet. I think they did the right thing scrapping it for later with Crack in Time and Rift Apart.

Y'know when most fans dream of ending up in a Johnny vs. video, I can't say that's what someone like me has in mind. In Johnny's defense, i don't remember any of Deadlocked's music either BUT I will still defend the first three games, sometimes the songs can get too similar, and because of all the sound effects it can be tough to make it out, but I still maintain David B. was a great composer and it sucks we lost him after A Crack in Time. I didn't truly appreciate his music until I actually went out of my way to listen to it outside of the game so I suppose that was a fault of the game devs. EDIT: Actually David B. stopped composing after Quest for Booty, sorry.... Also I was joking when I called the soundtracks masterful BUT as I stated before there's plenty of great songs and David B. was very good.

With this one you're definitely missing out without multiplayer. The main selling point of the game was that it was a huge expansion to UYA's multiplayer mode and it had a ton of cool stuff in it. It was one of the first online games I remember playing a ton of and it's actually where I got my username from cause there was a skin that looked like a Robot Zombie in it. Edit: IIRC another reason why this games scope was really limited is that I believe Insomniac were also working on the first Resistance game on PS3 which was also putting a huge squeeze on resources given that they weren't just making 2 games at the same time but a launch era PS3 game at that

One complaint I heard about Deadlocked is that it's more or less the arena challanges from GC and UYA but over the course of the entire game...and having played and 100% (Including Plat on HD) the game, while that isn't correct, they aren't 100% wrong either? Game is still fun as hell though. Also fun fact: The entire R&C series was released in Japan (With Japanese voice acting, different game titles, and a slight change to Ratchet's design giving him darker eyebrows) and did well. Good luck with the PSP games (gonna guess your playing the PS2 ports...which SAC didn't release on PS2 in Japan) cause ooh boy that is gonna be some hard whiplash.

... is it just me, or is this game really gray and brown? Combined with the attempt at an edgier/darker take on the series - I realize it's not accurate what with the humor and all (even if it's kind of annoying humor), but it just made me _think_ of Shadow the Hedgehog right away.

Honestly I'd say that's a fair assessment. I wouldn't say Ratchet Gladiator was as drab as murky brown shooters go as there is still character to it but comparing it to UYA and GC it's definitely a noticeable drop. The games not bad but it is honestly kind of mindless and for me it's not one I can play for long periods.

I really love this game and I don't know what it is, honestly. The consistent combat, the difficulty levels, and honestly just trying to get everything is really fun! There's a structure to this game that makes completion really enjoyable. I know you mentioned that Skill Points are handed out to you constantly, but that's partially because... the first three games have 30 skill points. Deadlocked has _165_ skill points. Also, OST-wise, I don't know... Stygia's Energy Collector track, Ghost Station Running the Gauntlet, and Destroy the West Generator have been favorites of mine for YEARS. But I can understand that these are just three tracks across the whole game!

I only ever played this and Going Commando, but honestly? I remember preferring Deadlocked. Yea, it doesn't have as much platforming as GC, but by sticking so closely to what it works I don't remember that much bumps on the journey, unlike GC where I can and will recall the point the game was losing itself and showing its rushed nature (Snivelak). I also don't really mind the announcers being common and Vox being paper-thin, felt it did a good job emphasizing the satirization of the "death game for entertainment" trope that tends to appear every now and then and most of the jokes were funny, but I can see that annoying people. I haven't touched either game - or even the other PS2 games, for that matter - since 2010s though, so maybe I should do that at some point.
