In the late 70s I had an appointment at the Livingston Parish Court House in the small town of Livingston, Louisiana to cordially see the Judge about a speeding infraction 😇! After having made my donation assessment 😭, I was informed that two of my childhood heroes were there signing autographs and greeting the public. It was former World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis and World Champion Swimmer turned actor, Johnny Weissmuller and famous Tarzan! Joe Louis was wheelchair bound and both were aged but one of those rare but good surprises I'll always remember. RIP, Joe and Johnny!

As a child growing up in the 60s and 70s I never missed a single Tarzan film starring Johnny Weissmuller. I loved his character, Tarzan. I especially like the movie where he jumped off the Brookland Bridge to escape capture from the local Poe Poe. He was grace under pressure always. Such an eloquent and educated man... and boy was he athletic and stayed in great shape his entire life. I miss those days. And yes, I am a Boomer and proud of it.

It's funny isn't it, certain things are world wide, Johnny as Tarzan, here in Western Australia I remember waiting as a kid for his Saturday movie (born in 1960 this way) it was good clean fun, innocent and we all looked up to him as a hero, no super power's or special effects, unlike today just good clean adventure, then we would probably go outside and play with out mates, (don't come home till the (street) lights come on. with him, flash Gordon, superman, etc, we truly had something we could sink our imaginations into now look at what the kids of today have to contend with....

I watched this show on Portuguese television with my dad when I was little. It was one of my favorite shows, ever. My dad was a great swimmer, and he admired Johnny greatly. But to me, it was such a lovely experience to watch the old classic black and white Tarzan episodes with my dad. I will always cherish those memories. Thank you Papi, I miss you, and thank you Johnny. May you both rest in peace.

He said something I will never forget. I don't know if he knew what he said applied to all of life, or not because he was talking about swimming, but it does apply to everything, for everyone. He said, "the hardest part of swimming is to swim as fast as you can--while remaining totally calm". Really think about that. Reminds of what John Wooden said, something very similar, can't remember the exact words, but I do the sentiment, in reference to his team's dominance of the sport "we are quick--but never hurry". Those are two, very different things.

My grandpa told me of Tarzan before I saw my first movie. He had read the books and told me those stories; but in such a way that I believed there really was a baby raised by apes. Johnny Weissmuller only added validity to that misconception. Of course I realized my mistake eventually. But memories of Pawpaw and Johnny Weissmuller take me back to that wonderful fantasy I enjoyed in my youth. I have bought the dvds and plan to share those memories with the grandkids.

When MGM was celebrating the movie That's Entertainment back in the 1970's I was there to help behind the scenes. This was the day in my life that I got to meet just about every MGM star. These were real movie stars back then. Nothing like the bitter grapes I see today. It was here that I met Tarzan himself, Johnny Weissmuller. The man actually gave me the time of day. We, me that is, spoke fast and nervous. He finally sits his big hand on my shoulder and said, "I don't even swim that fast slow down will you." He smiles and says, "You aren't trying to get into the movies are you." I replied, "Sometimes." Mr. Weissmuller then said in a serious tone. "Well don't!" He shook my hand smiling, walking away saying, "You're a good kid." That's the last time I saw him. Years later he died and I cried. Thank you for listening Mr. Weissmuller and excuse me for talking faster than you can swim. 🏊 Thanks for being so down to earth. Respectfully yours, Anthony, the kid.

I love this interview. I have the 12 Tarzan movies JW made and I love them all. I miss Maureen O'Sullivan when she left, but having Johhny as Tarzan is good enough. Next I want to get Jungle Jim on DVD. Johnny Weismuller seemed to be such a nice man, and so talented. 50 gold medals in swimming & a bronze for water polo. We lost him in 1984 at age 79 after a series of strokes. Such a loss. At his request, his original Tarzan yell - which was used in later Tarzan movies with other actors (terrible - JW was the only Tarzan) - was played at his funeral. I love at the end of this interview when he says, "ungawa". Anyway, thanks for posting this interview. Wow - he was born in 1904 - looking pretty handsome there at 70!

In the Movies "Tarzan and his mate" and "Tarzan finds a son" Tarzan rescues Jane and Boy respectively from a Rhino. In those scenes, Weissmuller actually rode a real rhino. And in many of the films he rode Indian elephants, sitting right behind their heads. By far the best movie Tarzan.

I read that the elephants had enlarged rubber ears to make them look African.

Mr. BLACKHAWK yeah it seems to me that, for a couple of films, the poor Indian elephants had prosthetic ‘Fake African Bush Elephant’ ears. In later classic films, usually Gordon Scott and Jock Mahoney ones, they are all genuine Indian elephants, with fairly small ears being naturally prominent as usual.

I wish there were more interviews with Weissmuller. He seems to be overlooked and considering that he was everyone's favorite. He seemed like a nice guy - juswt regular Joe. I liked at the end when he says the famous "Tarzan" word - he always said that it meant, "Let's get the hell out'a here!".

It must be understood that Johnny Weissmuller, a Magyar and all of the Hungarians were intentionally given bad-guy parts within Hollywood as Bela Lugosi[Dracula],Yul Brynner[Ramses II, the evil pharaoh in the Ten Commandments], the Marx Brothers-bumbling idiots,Peter Lore-always the seedy naziand/or criminal, about 30others;then, Tony Curtis Kerttesz & his daughter Jamie were moved up the scale due to legal leverage &demand, Drew Barrymore,John & Jim Belushi as wellas the list of scientists & Olympic Champions! John Kovach1970 NationalChampion atPrinceton/engr. at NASA P.S.We have a strong loyal network and are genetically related to the Lithuanians, Finnish, Basque mixed by rape by Islam, not protected by U.S. Treaties and the great ones killed defending Europe & the U.S.

John Cornel Kovach Hungarians were not "intentionally" given bad-guy parts -- the studios hired folks that they believed would be most convincing in roles -- PERIOD. It was a movie INDUSTRY, not a privately-owned racial profiling business...They didn't FORCE people of certain nationalities to audition! Were they supposed to ignore certain people if they were perfect for certain parts b/c it wouldn't look good to folks like you??? Good GRIEF, already -- give it a REST.

But Johnny Weismuller was a VERY cool dude, and a REAL mensch. And the BEST Tarzan, EVER. AND he got to see Maureen Sullivan's coochie, up close, which places him WAY up high in The Cool Club hierarchy. Right up there with Bryan Ferry.

I lived a short distance from an industrial complex. In one of the factory yards sat an old crane, with a perfect free swinging cable. All of us kids would take turns climbing onto the cranes cab grabbing the cable and swinging out. For many reasons this was quite dangerous, but at the time we didn't understand that...or maybe we just ignored it. Anyway, it was all part of playing Tarzan. Great memories.

Well I'm at that age of consciousness, where God has me evaluating my life, thus far, the good and the bad, and to show thankfulness to those who helped me along the way. And Johnny Weissmuller is one of the first ones who brought so much aliveness into my life. Honestly who didn't like Tarzan, Jane, and that curly head very likeable Boy. I got my first glimpse of true love, that Tarzan showed to Jane, esp that scene when Jane almost drowned, and Tarzan was over her saying, "Jane! Don't die". As a child, that was touching to me. In my neighborhood of about 500 people and 5 streets, every Saturday morning the streets would be quiet because all of us kids, would be in our own home, watching Tarzan. As soon as it was over, I would go to the front door, and you could hear someone from one street give a Tarzan yell, then the next street, someone would give one, on my street I gave the yell. Then the kids would fill the streets again. We even did Tarzan stunts, like climbing high trees, jumping ditches, and no one was ever hurt. I don't think I would have ever climbed a tree, had I not watched Tarzan, and some of my best times, was climbing and sitting in a tree. In that era, the 60s, I would say that Johnny Weissmuller was one of the best loved person, in the world. ✌❤RIP Johnny Weissmuller ❤

Johnny was born in Timisoara ,Austro-Hungarian Empire,he is of german origin by both parents, and so german should have been he's native language. But the most important thing about him is he's sporting achievement- he's the first ever to break 1 min barrier in 100 free, and one of the greatest swimmers ever, he retired unbeaten!
