Yeah, so great to see Johnny healthy and at the top of his game. He definitely came to play this night. No phoning in shit here. Been a fan since his first Columbia release "Johnny Winter." Fun trivia fact: Mike Bloomfield was playing with the Electric Flag at Fillmore East and told the crowd "You gotta hear this young blues player", and brought Johnny up on stage to jam. Just so happens that Columbia Records execs were in the audience and were so impressed they signed Johnny that night. I know it sounds a little like "urban legend", but I DID read this story on a music website. I'll try to find the source for y'all.

I was at this show and what a show it was . Believe it or not Johnny was the opening act for Green Earring. The place was packed when Golden Earring came on by second song they had to pull out there #1 Radar Love, as there was probably only a third of the crowd left. Everyone was there for Jonny he was killin it that night big time.

Had no idea this was filmed, remember it well, we bought tickets on the street. Johnny came on and everyone was up out of their seat and he had us on a ride with his band just giving it all, the place was rocking! Golden Earring came on after and people left including us, they were nowhere near that raw energy. Thank you Johnny Winter!

An old stoner friend turned me onto Johnny when I was 16 in '78. I owe that old boy. Johnny's music has been one of the backdrops of my life. He was one of the reasons I kept playing the guitar after I started at 14. "Sweet Papa John" from "Captured Live" was then and has always been my favorite guitar solo from any player.

I had the privilege of seeing him live at the Hampton Roads Colosseum in 1973. I was 22. Me and two or three buddies drove down out of the mountains of Virginia to see him play. His show was amazing. He was the quintessential guitar slinger. His speed licks were totally original, and his style was as unique to him as Hendrix' style was unique to him. The greatest guitarists develop their own unique style. They develop a trademark sound upon which no one can ever really improve. It's theirs and belongs to no one else. We may hear nuances of other guitarists, but when melded together with their own sound, it becomes all their own. There will NEVER be another Johnny Winter just as there will never be another Jimi Hendrix. These guys were bona fide trailblazers, pioneers of a whole new genre of music. That is why 100 years from now they will still be the gold standard for blues-rock guitar. Lots of copycats out there, but few great originals.

Johnny Winter was my first concert at 13. He was my guitar hero. I'd drag my Dad's mono speaker into the bathroom so I could listen to Johnny Winter Live And... while taking a shower to get psyched up for major track meets. I was a sprinter, and listening to JW got me amped up to EXPLODE out of the blocks! Actually, the day after that first show I had a meet, but my hearing was blown from the night before. I remember nodding my head to my coach as I watched his lips move; all I could hear was a steady tone. I had one of my best long jumps of the season because nothing could distract me! I saw JW once per decade in the 7O's, 80's, 90's and around 2007. Best show was 1998 up in Boulder. Both his playing and vocals were exceptional. Unfortunately, the last show I attended was painful to watch. I had to walk out because it was just too difficult to see Johnny struggling to keep up with the band. I still say the intro to Be Careful With A Fool is the greatest opening to a song I've ever heard.

Stop the SRV vs Johnny Winter wars. Both were the best and both were completely different. I've seen both in concert in their prime and both were amazing . Many who worship SRV only saw Johnny as an old man in a chair.. and never saw him in his prime. Johnny Winter was famous and playing blues rock 20 years before SRV was around. No one can play lead and sing at the same time like Johnny Winter could.. and he had a great voice right up to age 70. Both JW and SRV did a lot of drugs and alcohol and both had their problems. But Both are Legends now.

Well said man, they were friends too, Johnny kept a SRV foto in the front of his bus. Diferent styles, great music nontheless.

Awesome! Saw these guys in Toronto in 1980 in an 12-hour concert with Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, etc, etc. Johnny and his band were the best music of the day. Johnny was/is the best electric blues guitar player of all time.

I like how well you can hear John Paris's bass playing here. It makes it easier to appreciate how good he is. Winter is in good form covering a lot of ground. He might not have the voice of a the gospel greats but something about his singing does it for me - earthy He and his brother were talented dudes.

I believe this was Johnny opening for Golden Earring. Rick Santers Band also was a support act. I was at that show and remember half the house exiting after Johnny played. I stayed for two GE songs and then bolted for the bar, too.

I hung out with him at concerts in Audubon Park c.1970-72. Had no idea he was Johnny Winter. I called hi Lightning. Who knew? But when I put it together a year or so later...wow. Regardless, he was an incredible talent. I never grow tired of hearing him play.
