Season 5 was a pretty monumental season for South Park, introducing beloved characters like Jimmy and Towelie, elevating Butters to a bigger role, experimentally killing Kenny for REAL, and generally just finding new ways to tell stories within the world of the show. But probably the BIGGEST change came from perhaps the most infamous episode in the show’s history, one that to this day is considered one of their best, Scott Tenorman Must Die. And that change has everything to do with how they write Cartman. So today, let’s fully dive into Scott Tenorman Must Die, look at how it subverted what we knew about Cartman at the time, and how it changed his characterization forever.

Yeah, it was one of those moments that made me think Cartman didn't actually care about who his father was. He just wanted answers because he was ticked that people were lying to him because how dare they lie to Eric T. Cartman. After all, Mitch the hand puppet is just something Cartman made up. It's an extension of himself, meaning Cartman knew deep down that people were lying and he just needed an excuse to find answers.

Kenny was definitely always the notable star of the show in the early days, but if we were to break up the show into distinct eras, I'd say Cartman is the most iconic in the middle and possibly later seasons. Randy might take 1st place for the modern seasons, either serialized or post-serialized. But like yeah, overall I'd say Kenny is the most iconic, with Cartman at no. 2, and probably Randy in 3rd place.

I was hoping he talked about the twist that Scott Tenorman was Eric's half-brother because even though it's from a banned episode, it's a huge twist. I do hope they try to revist it since the banned episodes are really difficult to find a way to watch, so many people probably don't even know the twist. It would be nice for them to bring the story back up again, so people can find out even if they haven't seen the banned episodes and it would be perfect for current south park since they do serialized stories pretty often or at least elements and Scott could make for a good story or even a good idea for one of the paramount movies.

I've heard a lot of people say that if the show had ended sooner or if this had happened later it would have been viewed as Flanderization. In any other show a character going from 'casual prick' to 'evil mass murderer' would be viewed as massive Flanderization. But due partially to the show running so long afterwards and partially because the first 3 seasons get ignored so often it somehow worked and became the new norm

That’s not really what Flanderization is, though. Flanderization is slow and happens for very specific reasons. As shows get longer and creators leave and writers come and go, some newer writers will interpret a character by one of their more distinguishable traits and over time it slowly warps the character until they’re defined entirely by that one trait. I think Flanderization with Cartman would’ve been more like, Matt and Trey leave, new writers come in, they know Cartman is anti-Semitic and over time that becomes Cartman’s ONLY character trait. Every second he’s on screen it’s always about “Oh Cartman is anti-Semitic,” and everything else about the character is thrown to the wayside.

This episode is a core memory with my parents 💀😂 Years ago, this episode came on, and my dad tells me and my mom, “you have to watch this! Wait for it!” and so my mom and I are sitting through the episode, asking my dad what gives, and he just keeps saying “wait for it!” Then finally, there’s the big reveal, and my mom and I are just sitting there like 😳😳😳 while my dad is laughing his ass off, and my mom and I are like “you made us sit through 20 minutes of this episode so we could see Cartman feed this kid chili made with his parents?!?!” I’ll never forget it 😂😂

Something that Matt and Trey have mastered beautifully and makes South Park great even now, is their ability to escalate a situation. Most eps are about one or more of the boys wanting something or to do something. And then the episode continues, hilarity following suit. This ep just started off with Cartman being scammed and ending with him feeding a boy his own parents and humiliating him in front of his idols. Just my writing that sounds insane, yet the episode builds up to it perfectly. Especially if you already have the context of future and even more evil Cartman in your mind while watching. At that point your just waiting for the shoe to drop.

I've got to admit, I'm very mixed on this episode. There's a part of me that truly thinks that this episode would've been a bit funnier if Cartman actually ate Scott's Pube chilli, almost like in Cartman's messed up head, he's thinking "me eating pubes is nothing compared to what I'm about to do to you!" So even though he comes out on top, he still looks like a bit of a jackass. Like at the end when he says "That's all, Folks" show him smiling with pubes in his teeth. The biggest issue that I have with this episode, is that it showcases that Cartman can never lose. He'll always have the upper hand. And even when he doesn't, he'll either still think that he does, or someone else (normally Kyle) will end up suffering for it more than Cartman. Strangely even in episodes where that isn't really the focus. I kind of miss episodes like Awesome-O and Cartman sucks where Cartman loses and looks like a fool, with no one to blame but himself.

Hi Johnny, if you’re looking for South Park video ideas, I’m personally interested in a video on season 19. This was South Park’s first full attempt at serialization in my opinion, and it was way better than their next attempt with season 20. While some hints at serialization were in previous seasons like 6 and 18, this is a full-on story about the entire town looking back on their past and doing a fresh start thanks to PC culture, with different plots about immigration, Yelp reviewers, safe spaces, the LGBTQ+ community, and an entire 3 part finale about advertising as well as gun control later on. This one is particularly special because a lot of episodes here were genuinely really good like Tweek X Craig and Safe Space (The City Part of Town is also an underrated highlight for me), and also they sprinkle in callbacks and foreshadowing every chance they get to connect all these otherwise slightly episodic episodes together. The City Part of Town, for instance, takes place after Garrison announced he was running for president (Where’s My Country Gone), had some jokes about Kyle being asked not to give speeches (also Where’s My Country Gone) and Craig being called homosexual (Tweek X Craig), and the ending at Whole Foods features David and his family who would later appear in You’re Not Yelping. I could go on with the synergy all these episodes have but I’m interested hearing your take on this part of South Park history.

The genius of this episode is how it almost seems to be going the other way and punishing Cartman with a kid so much crueller than him that we almost feel bad for him and want him to take revenge. Even the other kids are rooting for Scott to humiliate Cartman and sabotage his supposed scheme, not even for any provoked reason like in most episodes they are warring with Cartman. As much incompetent scheming he does in this episode, Cartman didn't start this one, he is trying to fight back against a bully and is pretty pitiful for most of the episode and it seems all built up to finalize this episode long parade of misery. And then he gets his payback...with HEAVY interest. The audience sure got what they wanted, right?....Right?.... :P

At the show's beginning, Eric was indeed just an annoying little asshole. He didn't do anything any other kid in South Park wouldn't do. He was just brat seeking attention because his mom didn't actually love him. But everyone made fun of him because he was fat, even the main cast that are supposed to be his friends. Scott Tenorman was only a breaking point. Maybe if people hadn't made fun of him he wouldn't have become that monster he is now known for. Not justifying all the horrible things modern Cartman has done, but all those things happened because he never recieved the love evryone (that kids) need and deserve. The Covid special shows that, when Eric gets out of that toxic environment and finds people that unconditionally love him, he can be a good person. But we'll never see that, because no one ever gave Eric a chance. Not even before he became an actual monster. Society loves pointing at monsters, but does nothing to prevent those monsters from existing in the first place.
