Many decades ago, my grandpa was at an Italian restaurant where after ordering he said, “grazie mille.” Don Rickles at the table over then says, “grazie mille. The guy knows two words and thinks he’s fluent!” Whole restaurant laughed and was a great moment.

When Rickles was on a roll, stay out of the way or you'll be run over. Only someone like Johnny could even dare to interrupt and get back at him. And to Rickles' credit, he instantly acknowledged every successful retort from Johnny. Classic.

Even when Johnny retired Don carried on for another 20 plus years and outlasted Johnny and Ed in life . His BFF Newhart is still alive to this day 2021. Don was truly a great comedian and helped bring laughter in times of sadness

Don Rickles, Johnny Carson, Bob Newhart, and one of my FAVORITES of all time was Buddy Hackett. This being said, Buddy's humor was funny but the language was definitely not for EASILY OFFENDED PEOPLE!

My God I had just completed my first year of college when this happened. Johnny said, at that time, he and Don had known each other some 30 years and here we are 30 more years later. Where does the time go? RIP to these two legends. They just don't make'em like that anymore.

One of the highlights of my entire life was seeing Rickles in Las Vegas. LOVED Rickles. LOVED Carson. Lucky to have been a kid when these guys were on TV all the time. After my parents would go to bed, I would stay up and watch the Tonight Show, every night! What an education. And then get up early for school. LOL. Best thing I ever did! Best memories. Great comedy. These guys were just AWESOME.

saw Don Rickles live at the Sands in Vegas, obviously many years ago when the Sands was still there. Rickles was terrific cutting up people in the 1st 2 rows. Great show.

I watched Johnny Carson for years as a child teen and as an adult I cried watching his final show it really felt awful like I was losing someone I really felt close to he was literally still at the top of his game. Don Rickles and Johnny together was magic these two are hilarious they are truly missed.

@@jaychip1 I saw Doc on tour in Ithaca NY when he was 87. Still hitting the high note, still dressing too loud...and even louder after the intermission. A sax player from The Tonight Show band was still with him...they were the only two left. Doc said he was going to keep doingit til he dropped.....it was a fun show.

Don was so talented. Guests often mention how much effort it takes to prepare great material for a talk show appearance. Especially when they were trying to impress Johnny. Don always made it seem like he just improvised everything on the spot.

Don said that before the show, Johnny would ask him what they'll talk about. But when it's showtime, Johnny would ask him different and random questions... So they do improvise on the spot, even Johnny.. Both of them are very comfortable with each other..

I did not get Rickles insult humor when I was young now I watch him every chance I get. Two people gave Don his start and that was Frank Sinatra and Johnny Carson. He always thanked them.

Me, too. I remember thinking that he was really mean and rude. Once I got his schtick and then further realized that it was all coming with love and respect for Johnny and others he became one of the greats for me. Amazing to see these clips from the 70's with Rickles, Johnny and other stars.

That is funny,I am 65 and watched the Tonight Show(mostly secretly as a young kid. Never cared for Rickles in my younger days but now I "get it'. I guess age helps you appreciate the level of performance of some of the older comics.(always loved Johnny,though).

Agreed! Three of the biggest (pre-Williams) comics that I would have loved to me - Rickles, Winters and Carson - trifecta right there. Got to see Rickles about half a year before he died, still going strong even though he had to sit because of his medical issues that caught up to him :(

I miss them so much. It’s strange…I watch these great clips and it seems like yesterday but it’s 30 years ago and sadly, there’s no way to go back.

you know I miss the show and the guest..... they took me thru my life, all the up's & down's, all the political issues, all the wars, all the tragedies, and my searches for love..... I all ways knew that I could rely on the Show to come on at a certain time...... and have a few laughs. And now as I am in the Dawn of my Life......... I reflect on many parts of my Life.......... and the Johnny Carson Show gave me peace of mind....... Thank You Johnny for the Laughs......

I graduated high school the weekend before this aired. Like many other early 70s baby's, I grew up watching Johnny late 70s throughout the 80s to the day he retired in 1992 (his goodbye show was the last Tonight Show I ever watched) There'll NEVER be another Carson or Rickles because NOBODY will ever come remotely close! Rest in POWER, guys!

Don Rickles. Every morning before I go to work I open KZbin and pick Don at Carson and then starts the day with a smile. He was a genius and thise 2 together....
