think you may have gotten a few things wrong. i could be wrong but I thought plato heard the legend of Atlantis myth was passed down from his great-grandfather... (Solon?), he didn't just "make it up" to explain other things. As i understand it, at the time he learned it it was considered an ancient myth- and lumping in Graham Hancock and Randell Carlson in with the BS on History Channel is a bit disingenuous. Graham has never claimed Atlantis existed. All he's ever said is that there's a lot we can't explain about the past esp regarding megalith construction and that we just need to stay open to the fact that there might be more technologically advanced civilizations that have been all wiped out form the geological record. if you take the myths seriously, which I think he's laid out a GREAT case for why we should, then Atlantis, or something real that the stories were derived from, isn't a crazy idea. And in the thumbnail you used the richat structure yet used GH and RC's faces over it. I know GH totally disagrees with this being a probable spot for atlantis. you should have used Jimmy Corsetti, of bright insight if you want your story to be accurate. might not seem like much but it matters when you are beating the drum of only what science decides having any bearing on understanding our past.

Plato did not pull the idea of Atlantis out of thin air. The story came down to him from his ancestor Solon, who heard the story of Atlantis from priests in Egypt. The story was said to be so old that the papyrus scrolls it was written on were disintegrating, and were being transcribed onto the temple walls to preserve it. And the date given for the destruction of Atlantis was very specific, not random. And it turns out that the date given was the exact time of catastrophic flooding and sea level rise at the end of the ice age.

Nah, The story of Atlantis comes from a festival speech of Plato, in which 3 fictional characters meet and one of them, Critias of Athens talks about this story he got from his grandfather who got it from Solon who got it from Egypt. It is very obviously an allegory and was preceded by a story about how Phaethon, sun god Helios son scorched the earth during a joyride with his fathers chariot.

I wasn’t good. The book he’s basing it off has nothing to do with Graham Hanncocks or Carlsons theories. The books first page says “Lemuria” which neither have ever mentioned. Lemuria is easily debunked as related to regions of where Lemurs spread from. This is a cherry picked, vague hack job form of Journalism, he then stemmed the modern movement of people theorizing potential ancient civilizations and connected them to Lemuria & the bases that Hanncocks arguments are based off of views from the story of Noah which is where the whole Aryian shit comes from which Hanncock doesn’t support. For example, maybe we accept the idea that "modern" civilizations started with Mesopotamia only because we haven't discovered any civilizations that existed earlier? I think many would agree that the discovery of ruins from an even earlier civilization would rival our common belief regarding the start of human civilization in Iraq. I'm sure before Mesopotamia was hypothesized as the first civilization, it was a later civilization, and a later one before the former's discovery. Nevertheless, this is just my personal thoughts on this matter. But I want to be clear that I also don't think they would've been as technologically advanced as many fantasizers believe they were.

Actually a rectangle with manageable size stones is the most practical way to construct millenia old structures. Transporting 100 ton stones and stacking them hundreds of feet high is extremely un practical and even with our most advanced technology it's extremely difficult to transport one 50 ton stone several miles, yet we find these structures all over the ancient world. I couldn't get through Graham Hancock's show because it's so unbelievably stupid. I thought I could stomach it because of the beautiful B-roll of archaeological sites, but no. I made it 3 episodes in before I couldn't stand the stupid. The problem is he starts from a premise I largely agree with (ice age civilization was probably a lot more advanced than we generally think) and then jumps to THEY SPANNED THE GLOBE AND HAD AIRPLANES AND BLACKJACK AND HOOKERS, and never shows any evidence at all. Because there isn't any. Meanwhile he has an episode talking about how humans have been in North America for far longer than we traditionally believed, saying "archaeologists don't want you to know this," WHILE HE'S TALKING TO AN ARCHAEOLOGIST WHO WORKS ON THE SITE, TELLING YOU ABOUT IT. He's a classic grifter who baits you by telling you that what "they" told you is a lie, so you believe whatever he says.

It may be worth noting that historians didn't think Plato's Atlantis was real, but it's equally noteworthy that Plato NEVER said that it was just allegorical pontification. Just go read what he said yourselves, and you will see that he talks about it as a real part of human history. Historians just ASSUME that he made it up, similar to how they assumed the city of Troy wasn't real until it was found. It's actually pretty annoying, on par with anthropology dismissing thousands of native histories as myths because they don't fit into the one "true" narrative that they have curated. The same narrative that rejected history being longer than 6,000 years old until Gobekli Tepe was found and dated to 12,000 years old. Anatomicslly modern humans have been around for over 300,000 years, so to say that there definitely weren't any civilizations until the last 4 or 5 percent of history is not science, it's dogma.

It's the same reaction from today's tenured archeologists as geologists back in the day when Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of Continental Drift with the clear eyed observations of the shapes of continents and the similarity of species where they once connected. But all the geologists of the day booed him off the stage, without any consideration of his theory, because it was counter to their entrenched views and because he was a meteorologist by training. But he was also a trained observer without the ossification of the imaginary faculties too often conveyed by influential teachers. Jump forward to today when Johnny is presenting the once decried theory that scientists now totally accept as part of the presentation. Yes, at that time they did not understand plate tectonics, but they didn't really give Wegener's theory a real hearing. Now in the time I've been reading about ideas of a lost ancient civilization, we have learned more out about the Younger Dryas catastrophes between 12, 800 to 11,500 years ago ( right at the time frame Plato dated the destruction of Atlantis, btw) and seen the most ancient organized societies emerge in Turkey dated during this same time frame. Atlantis may have been only one part of a world-wide civilization -- with a technology advanced but different from our own -- but no serious researcher today is proposing Scott-Elliot's fantasies. Johnny, I love your work, but you are at risk of doing the same thing Wegener's critics did -- hanging on to the status quo when serious, intriguing questions are being raised.

I think modern humans forget that ancient humans were also… human. The same brain that got us to space and built computers was around thousands of years ago. No. Timaeus, who tells the story, notes that it is based on research done by Solon into the tale (specifically names and their meanings). Solon is said to have found that early Egyptians writings, which he was able to translate, and thus gain the information sought. Then Timaeus says that his great-grandfather had obtained the original writing, which ended up in Timaeus possession. Solon (670-560 BCE) lived long before Plato (428-423 - 348 BCE). Depends on if you're talking about the city of Atlantis or the Island of Atlantis. The city would have been on the Eye of the Sahara and might be the first city from the Bible. The island of Atlantis story is based on the island of Hesperia which is Cyprus. The Minoan civilization of Crete was likely the last of the surviving boat masters of old Atlantis who become the Phoenicians. Asterion who the Athenians make into a monster was known as the half Bull because he was the son of Tectauus the Bull. Asterion was the King of Crete who named the constellations after his family. Taurus is named after his father Tectauus. His grandfather Dorus is considered Heracles to the Dorians. And his great grandfather Hellen is patron of all Greeks and is thought to be the mythical Perseus.

Here’s another way to find Atlantis on a real map: Plato created the story of Atlantis as a parable, but what recent events had inspired him in coming up with this story? There’s the Helike Ruins which was a city in Ancient Greece, which got submerged by a tsunami in 373 BC, during the lifetime of Plato. It’s not an advanced civilization, but it may well have contributed to the Atlantis story with the idea of a sunken city. The coordinates are (38.222E, 22.132N)

Actually there are at least 5 cities (remains of habitations) in the Aegean under water (In mind comes Kehries in Corinth and Paleopolis in Andros). Also in Asia Minor (todays state of Turkey) there is the opposite effect of cities becoming remote from the sea. In the ancient Greek, the term MYTH, μῦθος, refers to unrecorded history, rather than to recorded one, ἱστορία. However, the current historical narrative is religiously biased and consequently avoids the discussion of alternative civilizations; the people still believe the out of Africa hypothesis instead of Denisovian hypothesis as the original species source in order to support the historical aspect of the Eden myth in the middle east.

I don’t think I’ve ever commented before. But I wanted to offer a recommendation: the primary reason I love your channel is because I feel like you are painstakingly honest. I was very bummed that you had the concentric circle physical place in Africa in your thumbnail but it wasn’t even mentioned in the video (I kind of thought that’s what you would be talking about). You probably didn’t mean it intentionally, but I would encourage you not to become part of the KZbin culture of misleading thumbnails to get clicks. I did enjoy this video a lot… just kept waiting for the thumbnail image that never came. Thanks!

i think the craziest thing about human evolution and history is that from all we know, humans used to live in caves for tens of thousands of years. seemingly no technological advancements up to a certain point and i truly wonder if we are just wrong and that these long lost civilizations actually existed and are still buried deep beneath the earth and ocean or are simply lost to time. the progress humanity made within the last thousand years is just crazy when you think about that imo. and realistically, if it was real a million years ago, errosion could have easily destroyed any evidence of it.
