"Why have I been using these big beefy machines?" The answer is heat. You can make an insanely powerful laptop but the form factor will eventually limit performance as the heat has nowhere to go. I'm sure it did run really well for this tutorial. Keep using it for another four hours straight and that's where you'll see the difference between a laptop and a desktop. The other reason is cost. Laptops are way less bang for your buck than a desktop.

This sort of workflow really doesn't need to be so GIS intensive. As a geodesigner, it's often important to get out of analytic software and into design software as quickly as possible. A good shapefile or two goes a long way for one animation, but why spend all the extra time when what you need is open source and linkable? If you need niche data (disputed borders, treaty boundaries, resource lines, shipping routes), well sure you can spend more time on it. It's just about efficient use of time for the story.
@MrBallsMalone4 жыл бұрын
@@ryanleethomas The issue I see with it is using Mercator projection for every single project. Mercator has some advantages but it is far from a silver bullet and distorts things pretty terribly near the poles. Some have even accused it of being colonialist because it makes Europe look way larger than it is and make areas near the equator significantly smaller in comparison.

The only thing that bothers me using Open Street or Mapbox in Geolayers is the legal requirement for on screen attribution.
