For this very concept I love my programming teacher. Basically he assigned a freeform project to groups and gave us a hefty time-frame (5 months minus 1 month of fake pressure). So I both wanted to deliver to that teacher and to my group members and immediately got invested in the project. I created my first 3d fps game, my programming skills and understanding skyrocketed and I spent hundreds of hours in blender resulting in a basic understanding of modelling and reinforcing my knowledge for aesthetics, learned animation, graphics- and sound-effects on the fly, because I set that goal for myself, I wanted a finished product. By now that was 1.5 years ago and I never have been that productive since... hell... arguably I haven't been productive at all since.

Then one day, i did some portfolios about lungs, diabetes and muscle memory and put it on my teacher's table, and left, now, in college, more than 1 year later, this homework, that she ask 1 portfolio and I've made 3, all of them are in a display panel, to call students for scientific initiation more than a year ago. I know this is an old video at this point, but I want to say that I connect with this a lot. I have a similar story I'd like to share about an inflection point that occurred when I graduated college. I studied filmmaking and was unsure what path I wanted to take so I applied to a bunch of jobs in every part of film production. It was very difficult for me to break in anywhere even though I felt like I had a lot to offer a film company. I had VFX skills, editing skills, and some experience with cinematography. Then I came across an alumni of my college who worked in music videos and needed some help with VFX. It was a simple motion tracking job that was done after a week of work, but what happened next changed my trajectory entirely. The guy who hired me was taking a break from VFX and the director he worked with needed a VFX Supervisor for a music video that was shooting in two weeks. I hopped on board and built a small VFX team of friends from college. I went from a single freelance gig doing basic stuff, to the leader of a department on a professional music video shot entirely on green screen. In the end I finished it on time and satisfied the client and this lead to three more projects with me as a lead artist. I now work full time at a VFX studio on TV and films. It just goes to show that life can sometimes have these crazy moments of opportunity that force you to innovate and reform yourself. Anyways just thought I would share this. Hope you got something out of my little story.

I had a similar experience when I signed up for a summer math program for my university before my first year. I had done poorly in math in high school and knew none of the math that was required for the program, but I was excited to go to my uni the summer before my freshman year (I would be given free room and board too). When I was accepted I suddenly had a surge of excited accountability, and in the month and a half before the program I laser focused on math and learned faster than I had ever before. The program went great, and I was rated third highest despite having the least formal experience in math. Thank you for sharing your story, I never knew how to digest what I had gone through that summer but your video explains it well with an amazing story behind it.

The phenomenon that you are talking about has also happened to me. Back when I was 14 we had to make a poster about a disease and no one knew how to make one so I stood up and said that I new how to use photoshop and illustrator and I could make the poster. Little did they know that I had downloaded those programs a few days ago... Anyways I had spend a whole week continuously working on a poster and watching endless tutorials and the end result was praised by everyone in my class. It looked as if it was made by a graphic designer.

I totally relate to this. Back in 2016, I was board of my manufacturing job and had been board for the last 4 years in a 10 year career total. The speed boost that I got back then was finding an accessible career path that would get me out of my California Mojave Desert town and into a better state/city. I needed to make more money and enjoy what I was doing for a living. The career path that I found interest in was Web Development. I took my once MySpace HTML and CSS skills to a more professional level and began the journey to land a job in a different state. Fast forward to today. I’m living in Salt Lake City Utah working as a Software Engineer and finally enjoying my career like I’ve always wanted to. No more dirt roads. No more 30 min drives to the nearest coffee shop. No more 1 traffic light town. That was my speed boost into the hyper drive learning that you spoke about. Awesome video man. Already subscribed to skill share and have a ton of courses on Udemy.

Had an extremely similar experience. I was lucky to start an internship on my first year of college, to do graphic design. Someone asked me to create a website, I said yes, thinking it was a similar thing to designing brochures. It wasn't. I had some coding experience from 2 years of a previous unfinished engineering program, and when I discovered how websites were built, I simply couldn't get enough. After launching that website my obsession with it was fading but a bunch of organizations had seen and liked the work I had done, and then the small single-organization website became a state-wide project with lots of organizations involved, and that kept me in a cycle of forced learning, with constant incentives/rewards/penalties to keep it going. I have diplomas for Visual Communications and for Fine Arts, but have been mainly making a living off of web (and now app) development for over 11 years now. I value that learning more than anything I ever got from being in school, to be honest. I love this video, because there is incredible power in taking on commitments where you don't really have the necessary skills to deliver, but you know what it takes to deliver - and so you have no other option but to commit fully.

At first I was hesitant. Then I realized that the exact same thing happened to me when learning bartending. Whenever I got a gig (rarely) I would practice a lot, read a lot of recipes, tutorials, books etc.

I think what you experienced is simple motivation at it’s best. Many of us say we want to look better so we workout, but for me and I think a lot of people it is not enough. It wasn’t until I realized I wanted to be a firefighter that I was able to change my life physically. I guess the moral of the story is if your not succeeding, you probably don’t have the right motivations. Good luck you got this.

This helped me in realising that I've been putting myself in this situation a lot and it helped me improved in what I want to do and improved my decision making skills. Changed my life for the better. This clip clearly describes the reason why at that 1 time in anybody's life they are able to learn and excel in a short period of time and a leap in skills with little to no relevant knowledge.

I built my entire career doing this. Working for free at first, over and over again. Then making pennies, now supporting a family. All on music no less. From an old ass man, this stuff is truth!

Man I am literally doing the same thing. I promised to make brand documentary for a tea shop owner, and somehow I started another two projects with different brand owners before I even finished the tea project. And all three of them are so exciting, I get to travel and film in different cities. I learn new things from each project and use the knowledge to build on and propel other projects. I was watching your video because my first edit was not exciting enough. I didn't know your story is even better than your motion graphic skills. It's very encouraging to know the power of excited accountability especially for someone like me, who has little experience in filmmaking. Thank you for this video.

The last four days I spend watching Tutorials on InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, HTML, CSS, etc. and practicing. I have not been able to concentrate and sit and learn for hours at the time for the past years. I love it so much. I missed learning a lot. I am currently writing applications to get a position in vocational training as a graphic designer after my Masters. Exited Accountability.

I did something similar for Berlins Transport map, but in a much smaller scale: I noticed several mistakes in the map, like some lines being in the wrong position. So I posted pictures on twitter comparing the original map with my corrected version. And the transport company BVG actually followed like 90% of my suggestions! :D Edit: Oh and then the next year with a new line added they made a similar mistake again...

I relate with this process in a significant way. I do think some people are more naturally wired this way and willing to take that leap and commit to something they can’t do yet. But as you have laid it out in this piece, I have realized that even if you are not wired this way, being aware of this process you can force yourself to take that leap. I have taken many in my life and they have launched me into intense seasons of learning all of which have shaped who I am today.

I'll do it dude. I'll quit my bad habits, have a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, which is my goal right now. I'll come back here in 2 months to update how did it go, and I promise I will reach my goal. This comment will be my "accountability." It doesn't really matter if this will be seen or not, but I'll come back here.

Wow I just found this video...but for me it's perfect timing. I'm 56 and have learned so much over the last year. I set goals for myself and surpassed them. Gardening, canning, food preservation, wreath making and hand knitting. I want to learn about photography and embroidery this year (first grand baby coming soon). I think skillshare will help me achieve that goal. Thank you! 😊

Skillshare has amazing tutorials. I'm an artist and illustrator and I have only seen a few tutorials, but they've always been thorough, high-quality stuff with professionals who teach clearly. Now I only browse tutorials on the web when I am troubleshooting something, but I'm sure if I delved into more vids on Skillshare, I would get stuck less often.

I want to do both after watching Google Io 2019 I'm really into machine learning and neural networks. But I also want to learn how to get good and creating film like these videos. While working seems impossible to manage it all. But I guess it just requires sacrifice discipline and time management. It just sucks I think I'm at the point where im realizing where you can only satisfy your self actualization or your monkey instant gratifying consumption self. I want to do more but it won't happen if I don't make it happen. Time will go on little excited accountability I like this method. I did this a few times by accident in my life and always was happy with the result. From video projects, to first website for uncle. I think this is a great strategy. I just wish there was a way to do it all. There is but then you don't sleep and I've always undergone those side effects and health issues for too long.

There must be a big motivational reason behind the Excited Accountability, which comes as a result... either personal growth, family support (as a father), etc... It's amazing that he keeps himself motivated with all the hundreds of topics he mades videos of!

I love this video and you've done a great job of putting into words what I've been feeling for months. I'm a freelance software developer, and I'll often take on projects in things I really don't have any experience in, and have myself hungrily devouring tutorials and articles about the types of technology I need to use. I remember when I first learned HTML (code that makes up websites) I watched 40 tutorials in a weekend at 2x speed and absorbed it all.

I actually had this same experience 3 weeks ago. i've been teaching myself software development for a while but I've never worked on anything but personal projects. The Excited Accountability came when I offered to write some code to solve a problem at work. My job gave me until their deadline to ship 3 different products. So I was working alone on about 5 things at once. learning as i went. Ended up helping us turn a 20 day job into 5. I can now call myself a software developer.

I’ve felt this creating websites before especially when I’m excited about something. I offered to make one even when I had absolutely no experience at all. I’ve been wanting to jump into UX design but have absolutely no accountability to learn it. So I completely understand this. Thank you this was helpful

This is completely right. Last time I put myself in such a situation but in a rather negative way, which created exciting anxiousness instead xD A guy was not able to get his tractor which was located one mile in the field. He asked me in front of other people if I know how to drive it. Thinking of nothing, I said yes. But I assumed it rather, because I am a good car driver. Little did I know that he would later ask me to drive it back to his house over the field. I just went there and I told to myself: this is the day you will learn how to drive a tractor, without anyone teaching you :D And it worked. I figured out everything on the go and fixed mistakes on the go. It was such an amazing day :D

Hey Johnny, how is it going? I live in Spain and I use to read international press not only to be informed but to improved my English. In VOX I discovered your job, studies and so on. But I am really OH MY GOD because you learnt all of this by your own, without attending to a class. Its unbelieved all you achieved. Your videos are amazing and now you combine the knowledge in international relations with and making videos. The result is great informative content. Many times I have tried to study by my own, but I found it hard. Nevertheless, I think I feel identified with your words. Two years ago I did not know what direction must take. I had just finished my degree in Journalism and a friend told me: hey men, learning programming is a really good option. At the end I gave a step fordward and I will finished my formation in March. The real lesson is to feel inspired to do what we want to do and do it with passion and commitment. I had not wrote a message like this never before, but I think I had to do it. Sorry for my English, it is not good enough. (I already know you speak Spanish but xD... )Thanks and good luck. PD. In Spain could there be two interesting stories: the border with Marocco and France.
