Part of me thinks the reason that Brad Treliving was brought in last year was because he has the stones to make a big move (Huberdeau and Weegar for Tkachuk). The Leafs knew if they fell short again this year, he would be the guy to make a big move. He just needs Leafs upper management approval to make a move and shake up the "Core 4".

@@Wuwoot9863 who was Dubas trading? Marner? Who Dubas resigned with contract, a no trade clause and walked him into free agency? He resigned Nylander andbMathews with their no trades too. Tavares who he promised to keep the team together if he signed with the Leafs? The core 5 contracts with the no trade clauses are all Dubas' doing. Shanny fired Dubas because he knew Pittsburgh offered him the presidents job and Dubas wanted to renegotiate their agreement for resigning after the Pens made their offer to Dubas. @@GREGGSOHOhe certainly is a part. Not the entire problem, but a part. If you watched the leafs power play vs pretty much any other team in the playoffs, it was extremely evident how poor the coaching was (at least for that). I don’t believe that the countless players coming and going over the years all just happened to be “mentally weak.” If you put Matthews on Florida, guarantee he would shine playoffs or regular season. For example, Matthew Tkachuk was known as being useless for CGY in the playoffs. People said he was weak mentally, couldn’t play in big games, etc. Then he goes to Florida, and dominates in the playoffs. Main point is there is something inherently WRONG with the Leafs from top to bottom. There entire system is not functional in the playoffs.

The core 4 averaging 1.71 goals per game in the playoffs is not going to get it done...not when they're gobbling up 48.5% of available cap space. There's nowhere near enough cap space to bring in sufficient secondary scoring when Nylander has a headache and/or Matthews has the runs. This team is just built wrong.

Here's hoping Craig can light a fire under the team and pull them, even if it IS kicking and screaming, into the 2nd round, or beyond, next year, and here's hoping that the next GM has a clearer idea of what serves the team better. I honestly think that teams that focus too much on their star player end up sucking and having horrible depth when it matters. When your team's main focus is padding the score sheet for one player they obviously aren't going to have any success when that star player inevitably gets shut down during a playoff series. The Oilers did it for years with Mcdavid and Drai, they thought they were good because they had 2 of the best scorers in the league, meanwhile the rest of the team sucked ass. The Oilers finally look like a team and not the McDraisatl's. The Leafs this year were focused on Padding Matthew's score sheet and it was apparent in the playoffs.

What they need is a coach with the balls to DEMAND of Treliving that he helps him build them a better overall collective defense, yes maybe sell a Core 4 player, but for a Defensive asset ! B it a D-guy or a forward (preferably the first) with a very good transition game, not necessarily a producer - there's still this Klingberg debacle to sort out ahah - and a couple high rounds draft picks. The prospect pool is almost as apalling as the ease with which any opponent can shut down their defense to offense connection in playoffs series. Plus, you most likely won't get as rich in solid D prospects a draft class as this one in maybe a decade. Time to start building their next window of opportunity is now, not next year or the year after. Also get rid of those distraction guys, Ryan Reeves ain't useful on the ice anymore, barks more than he bites, skates slower than a ten-times repaired zamboni and kinda takes the space a deserving Marlies kid could fill. They talk culture a freakin lot but they ain't developping guys as they should, so the top dogs are never ever challenged in their ways.

@@jerd1245 completely different team. And he plays a way more advanced style of hockey now compared to back in the day.

I'm no fan of Keefe but he shouldn't be held to account for the under-performance of Marner and Tavares either. That said, Keefe did have the all-time 5th overall best winning percentage of ANY coach in the NHL @ .607. He just, for some reason, couldn't motivate the players enough to win in the playoffs ... you know ... when it actually mattered!

Barube has NEVER legitimately proven to be a tip coach tbh. There may be better options available after the playoffs end.

I think this current Leafs team is way too soft for a hard-nosed coach like Berube. But that’s not Berube’s problem to solve. It’s Treliving’s.

Quenneville still hasn't even been cleared by the league to return to coaching. Leafs can't be considering a non-option.

Easy, next head coach Jukka Jalonen and finally maple leafs would start winning things.
