With the max grip, have you ever seen any issues with referees telling the lifter to rack the bar and bring their grip in? The rule says "the whole of the forefingers must be in contact with the 81 cm marks if maximum grip is used". In some of your shots in the video, like the 5:20 min mark, it doesn't appear like the whole of the forefinger is in contact with the mark. My grip isn't rotated in as much as in the video but I do take a pinch grip so only my finger tip is contacting the mark. Out of meet, some IPF referees from USA have told me that my grip is illegal. I've only done 1 local meet so far with this grip and they didn't say anything there but it's possible that the referees were inexperienced.
@JohnPaulCauchi7 жыл бұрын
yeah it can be somewhat of a grey area. Sometimes the grip can slide accidentally wider as the bar is unracked because there's so much lateral force on the bar. But yeah, there is some room for interpretation by referes

I intuitively started using a milder version of this grip in my bench and OHP as a conventional grip causes me shoulder discomfort. It seems I can always get tighter with that bit of rotation too, especially with OHP.

is there any issue with slipping during a comp? if your index finger slips off the knurl mark and outside the rings, would you get red lights for that?
@populer2087 жыл бұрын
Probably. But just a little chalk stops it from slipping. Without chalk, I don't even start slipping until the 6th rep. If I'm not going for high reps I don't need chalk. Unless it's super hot in the gym; then a quick pet on the chalk bar is all I need.

Great tips sir. For my experience on this, trials and thousand errors, I have 2 issue : 1st- this type of grip doesn't allow (at least me) to completely lock the elbows (yet at the starting position). This is a problem in IPF competitions.2nd- Trying to use wrist wraps (at least for me) don't allow to fully reach that extended, chocked back and internally rotated position. Can U tell me something about theese?. Thanks.

Ever seen people have issues when referees are seated so that they can still see the rings, when using the more extreme version of this grip?
@JohnPaulCauchi7 жыл бұрын
It usually is ok. Only issue is, because the grip is so wide and there is so much lateral force between your hand and the bar, your hand can slide even wider as you unrack and you'll be illegally wide.
@lewsaboy16457 жыл бұрын
I have to bench with my hands inside the rings because if I go wider I can feel part of my pec connecting to my shoulder starts to really hurt. is it because of bad mobility and tight muscles or how I'm built?
@nikg727 жыл бұрын
in your case use smaller stance dont flare too much your elbows, it can cause shoulder impingement and its very long to heal. But you can still use this grip technique with a smaller stance, turns your elbows in like you want to bend the bar it will engage your lats and will feel very solid.
@nikg727 жыл бұрын

Hi JP, my bench press grip is fairly narrow, and I have noticeably stronger tricep that is probably developed by the narrow grip. However recently I have been told that for long run I should slowly move out the grip to slowly reduce the range of motion time by time, I would like to hear your opinion on this, thanks man!

If you have a client that benches full legal width, plus this Japanese grip, would you have him also doing a lot of supplemental and accessory movements with a longer range of motion for hypertrophy, or do you feel that a lot of the sport specific movement is sufficient for powerlifting?
@JohnPaulCauchi7 жыл бұрын
100% for longer rom exercises. A lot of medium-grip benching, dumbbell benching, incline benching. ROM is key for strength gains, minimising ROM (can be) is key for maximising lifts.

Yes, with highly extended wrists, it puts a lot of stretch and tension through your forearm flexors, so you can develop some medial epicondylitis (as that's where the forearm flfexors converge and originate)

To me this video demonstrates illegal wide bench press according to IPF rulebook. The WHOLE of the forefinger must be in contact with the marking when using maximum width grip. In this video the whole finger is not in contact with the ring. Looks like perhaps 25% of the finger is in contact. However, I've never seen any lifters be called for it. Thoughts? The spacing of the hands shall not exceed 81 cm measured between the forefingers (both forefingers must be within the 81 cm marks and the whole of the forefingers must be in contact with the 81 cm marks if maximum grip is used). The use of the reverse grip is forbidden.
