Many, many years ago, i received a "Special Commendation" for being lazy in my woodwork class at school. I had turned a small round jewellery box with a lid on the lathe. (I think it was about four and a half inches wide, and three inches deep). After giving it two coats of lacquer, i really did not fell like starting my next project. So i sanded and lacquered the box again, and again, and again. I think it had eight or nine coats on when i finished it. My teacher was so impressed with the shinny glass finish that he gave me, not just a commendation, but a "Special Commendation". I had to walk on stage in morning assembly, collect a certificate and take a bow in front of the whole school. "I gave up being lazy" :-)

I saw this bowl in a preview you did JFR. It stood out because someone's Grandpa hand turned it. He chose a lovely piece of wood (I don't what it is) but it is beautiful. Oh wow... such a beautiful repair. There is so much to praise on this repair, the new handle, finish is glorious, the repair to the bottom is invisible! This is Trena doing her magic as usual for sure, if it were my heirloom I'd be very happy, it brought a tear to my eye thinking how happy I'd be to see it restored and it's not even my bowl! I have a question about the repair to the crack. Functionally I completely understand why you needed to put those two horizontal pieces in to stabilize the crack so it won't continue to split... I am curious if there were alternatives or way to disguise them so they aren't as noticeable? But it is an excellent repair it should last forever. Thank you so much for making these videos and P.S. I've voted for Laura again, hope she gets the prize. Cheers!

In Japan, the crack would be repaired and enhanced with gold.

It is called, Kintsugi and is usually on broken pottery but it has morphed to include repairs to many hand crafted items. The idea is to embrace the imperfection and acknowledge the art of the repair.

@@l.m.2404 That's a neat concept... a golden Band Aide, why not? And here I was thinking that restoring a piece was to make it look like it never happened... but that's the other way to look at it too! This reminds me of something similar: musicians did variations on a music theme, there were rules how to do it, one of them was to make the original theme recognizable, and then the "art" was in the skill of the performer to embellish and add new elements to it... I'm doing a terrible job explaining and remembering the idea... but I very much like the concept... And of course it applies as life lesson on top of everything else! Very Cool !

This bowl reminds me of a bowl that I have from my grandmother. She had seven boys and a husband on the farm and she would make 12 dozen homemade biscuits every morning for breakfast in that bowl. It does not have the little legs on it but it does have that crack. I have it put up in storage. It has no finish on it whatsoever, it’s all natural. ❤️

Am a restoration gunsmith with a strength skill with metal, so the wood repairs are basic but doable. I've been misguided by many on the wood repairs, especially colour matching. Looks very nice! "Lacquer won't play well with oil finish underneath" Not so sure about that. In the 1970s -80s I made hundreds (1000s) of accessories that were dipped in an oil finish, dried one day then sprayed with sanding sealer and then lacquer. I have many of them on display now. None have shown any finish failure. Once the solvents evaporate they are non-toxic.

Trena, my grandmother had a bowl similar to that one she used as mixing bowl for biscuits. (Best softball size biscuits in the world) My grandfather said he had hand carved the bowl from elder wood when they first got married. It was hand rubbed with oil (sorry I don't know what kind.) I know she used it as long as she lived and it then went to my Aunt. It was never shellacked as far as I know. Wonderful bowls to make biscuits.

What is French Polish?

French polish is shellac dissolved in alcohol, it is available in different shades and to get a high gloss finish takes several coats. Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold either as dry flakes or dissolved in alcohol.

this was a very careful restoration. and keep in mind the customer wishes are more important than any held beliefs on what should and what should not be removed. it is the family who wanted it refinished and it is only the families wishes that matter here. the age and distress can now shine as the dirt and scratches were hiding so much of its beauty. thanks for watching.

@@johnsfurniturerepair I know. I'm not yelling or berating you for it. You do such amazing and careful work. If you weren't doing this work on the pieces you receive they would be considered garbage by most people and nobody would want to take care of them. I, personally, believe that once something gets to a certain age we become its custodians. We take care of it and maintain it for the next person to enjoy. Sometimes that means it needs to have the past abuse scraped off so that people can remember why it was special in the first place. Family heirlooms are an entirely different sort of animal though. They're not really meant for anyone but the family, and while I would have loved for that bowl to be seen in a primitive antique lover's collection, proudly displayed as the dirty old beaten thing the years have made it, ultimately its the family that needs to be proud to have it. Not everyone likes primitives. That's perfectly okay.

Out here in west Texas the humidity can be 4-10%! I use epoxy, the old hide glue turns to dust!

That might not sell it anymore. French polish is just dressed shellac and denatured alcohol. You can mix your own and apply with a pad. There are lots of demos online. I’ll have to do a French polish vid

I love restorations with sentimental value. Sentimental value is the most expensive value a item could have because it takes time to accrue. There is a purity in having an item restored just because you love it. Did you ever learn what the wood was, it's really beautiful? :)
