What is the pulse? My boat was previously modified. Seems the pulse line from crankcase is capped. There is a inline fuel pump. Is the fuel pulsing normal? the inline pump seems weak with pulsing and fluctuating. What powers this pump? My inline pump kicks on when the key turns.

They just disconnect two sets of wires (the one you showed plus some others and cut off the 2-stroke oil supply by placing a bolt in the line (you also have this). Mostly convenience. A VRO means you don't have top premix, just have to keep the oil reservoir filled with oil. However, a VRO is just on more thing that can break and if this happens on the water you could be running a motor with only fuel and no oil to lubricate the engine, which can cause major damage.

Cool, Thanks. just may do that. Before I junked my Johnson 130 hp, just wanted to see this thing run for awhile. That VRO is junk even if you buy a good one, they're more trouble than premixing. This thing started using 2x's the amount of oil, smoked like crazy and barely got home from running out of oil. Bypassed that VRO and run synthetic premix... its good to go now with way less smoke. Using a leaner oil at the dock and switch to the heavier oil ratio out in the open. Gonna try a leaner ratio than 50:1 out in the open later. May help someone understand that VRO oil pump which will fail, probably when the big fish are biting.

If you purchase the pump with the part number in this video the pulse hole on the back is closed up with a plug and pulse is supplied via a hose instead. As for your concern about it supplying enough fuel I’ve never had an issue as long as the fuel barbs are open enough, I’ve seen a replacement Sierra part for this pump that is identical, but the fuel barbs aren’t as large which causes it to not supply enough fuel, so I’m guessing that those people likely bought an aftermarket pump that was intended for a smaller motor.

The old VRO2 pump was not holding pressure, so it had to replaced either with a standard pump or a new VRO2 pump. A standard OMC pump is much. much cheaper. If your VRO pump is working you can disable it by plugging up the oil line and disconnecting the wire connection to the pump.

Jason. I have the same pump I'm about to replace my vro with. My pump has three nipples and a hole on the back side of the new pump. I wondered if the hole on the back was just for looks or had a use. So... I tried to blow air through it, and to my amazement, air came out of the pulse nipple. And air could be blown in reverse through the pulse nipple and out the hole on the back. So..... to add further inquiry. Does that hole need to be plugged? Yours is "plugged" by your bracket. The hole on the back is slightly longer than the mounting holes, so it doesn't / won't sit flush on my mounting bracket. Would like to know the answer to this before I put it on and put my motor back together. My vro was a PITA to get off as the mounting screws were behind carburetor intake and behind the starter. Don't want to have undo everything if it's supposed to be plugged. Thanks
@Lakewooddrone
@Lakewooddrone 4 жыл бұрын
Scott what did you end up finding out??
@scottmcmillan5085
@scottmcmillan5085 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lakewooddrone The hole on the back had a little lip on it. I filed that level with the two mounting holes. That way it would be flush against my mounting bracket. I put a liquid gasket on and around the hole on the back. Tightened it a bit, and let it cure over night, then gave it a final tightening. The fuel pump works on the pulse of the engine. Think pulsating vacuum. One pulse pulls the diaphragm, which pulls gas in, the return stroke of the engine pushes diaphragm back, pushing gas through the pump and into the motor. If the third hole on the back is not mounted directly to the motor for pulse, then it needs to be plugged. A vacuum can not be created when there are two openings allowing free flow of air. Wish I could post pictures on here, I'd show you what I did. I do have pictures posted of iceshanty.com under Michigan ice fishing reports. The thread is "stay at home plans" and or "stay at home....... boredom". Pictures include custom mounting bracket, gasket covering third hole on back, and mounted back on motor. Note.... have not started boat yet, as I'm in the middle of changing out the tilt trim motor. Hope this helps

@scottmcmillan5085
@scottmcmillan5085 4 жыл бұрын
The hole on the back needs to sealed off to work properly. If it is not sealed, vacuum can not be created. If by chance the hole on the back sits "flush" against your mounting bracket, it may create a full or partial vacuum. If it starts and idles fine, that does not mean everything is proper. Trying to run full tilt where the pulse is really giving the fuel pump a work out, will tell if you have a good seal on the third hole on the back of the fuel pump. Anything other than running perfectly is a vacuum leak via the third hole on the back. Hope this helps.

Here it is: Re: Threaded hole behind fuel pump on my Evinrude There are 2 versions on fuel pumps for that engine. One version uses the hole at the back as pulse hole, the other version the hole at the back is plugged with a screw and gasket and a separate pulse hose to the pump. I have three hoses like in the video. I understand where they hookup, but I'm guessing I simply plug the back like all the other videos and reason being is because, in my motors case, the pulse tube should do both high end and low end pumping? If my logic is correct the back hole is meant for low end pump pressure and the front third port is meant for top end. I may have those backwards but that was where my head was connecting dots. And due to this, some boats I guess don't need that back hole pressure? Correct me if Im wrong. I have a 1990 Evinrude 70hp im planning to attempt this on.
