Also, on top of this advice, I just want to add if you're using a controller it's okay to turn auto aim on. This game is no fun if you're struggling to aim fast and fire (it was made for auto aim in mind as a main feature), especially on horseback, not even pros give a damn about not using auto aim with a controller. It will just aim for center mass and guide it, but you can still aim for important specific parts of the target real quick. If you were using a mouse I would suggest otherwise. - With auto aim on you can utilize deadeye like it's meant to be utilized, marking headshots fast and being a rootin tooten cowboy scootin and poopin' ~ sorry

John at the end of the episode when you thought Micah was antagonizing Strauss. He was actually kicking a dog hard on the side and yelled "get out of here your parasite!" And the dog ran away immedialty. The dog was innocent and was just sleeping (or relaxing) when he kicked it for no reason at all. Bill did cuddle with the same dog not a long time ago and Micah frigthened it away. Micah is pure evil and sadistic.

Hey john loving the series so far but a couple tips if i may. You can use the camp boat,just press Y, the three islands in the distance out from camp are where you can find iguanas (if your interested in getting the satchels,they require the varmint rifle) for hunting 1st, always crouch running will alert whatever animal your hunting and will cause the tracking bar to deplete faster. 2, use eagle eye constantly to refresh the tracking bar and see 3 star tracks. 3, you can safely ignore the tip about using poison arrows for deers and cougars. a normal arrow to the head will do fine. last use cover scent lotion, animals in this game can smell you and will bolt if they pick up your scent. In regards to bait im sure you know this but herbivore attracts deer,elk,ram etc while predator attracts bears,cougars,coyote and panthers. if your interested in catching some of the legendary fish you'll require special lake,river and swamp lure which can be brought in lagras. Thanks for hearing me out and keep the vids coming👍

John, when it comes to hunting, you should scan what star the animals are first. I think a 1 star animal will pretty much always give a "poor" quality return. Find a high point where you can scout an area, bring out the binoculars, and look around for animals that are 2 star (good) or preferably 3 star (perfect). Then, from there, use the correct weapon showed in the compendium and aim for headshots. You can also use baits to help lure animals to an area, that way you don't have to chase them around like you were with the rabbits. It won't spawn them, but if they're around they'll come by.
@GolemCC3 ай бұрын
I will add it doesn't need to be the EXACT right weapon. If it says "bow with poison arrows", a bow with normal arrows will probably work fine. It's just trying to guide you towards caliber sizes, e.g. not using a high powered rifle on a squirrel. As long as you make a clean kill with a weapon not too oversized you'll be fine.
@rabbitpvncher3 ай бұрын

i will also add to this that you dont need to check compendium, you can press check info (press Y on controller i believe) when aiming at said animal. you must one shot them to get perfect skin/pelt, sometimes the animal would still be alive after the first shot will die after a bit of time, or you get the option to do mercy killing for a "plus cowboy" binoculars are great to study the animals to see the stars on them if you havent studied the same kind yet

Just in case someone hasn't tried telling John this, but he doesn't need to skin the animals before putting them on his horse, it saves space and it doesn't get Arthur dirty. Also all animals have different values and aren't all 3 stars just because you use the right weapon. You also get a goofy cutscene if you are in camp while being too filthy, nothing major. Even if John doesn't see this or already knows by the time he does, at least ill get it off my chest to say I tried.

all rockstar games are pretty much like this but not to this level. a lot of people criticize rdr2 for having the exact same design philosophies to as far back to rockstar's ps2 games, but i think iterating on what they're best at has turned out to be a good thing. rdr2 is by far the most immersive and has the most detail. but even bully for the ps2 has every npc named with their own schedules and personalities, and even has the exact same "greeting" system where you lock on to the npcs and can either greet or antagonize. rockstar games are pretty unique.

i think the only thing i really dislike about rockstar's sticking to their ps2 era is that the missions are incredibly linear and give you no freedom, even failing you if you do it a different way than it intends. somehow rdr2 gives you even LESS freedom than those ps2 games in that regard lol

John you can also lasso a wild horse from your own horse, and then try to calm them down/ tame them from there. I don't know if in that particular case it may have been bugged, but in general that's something you can try in the future. Any time you have to "return a horse" for a mission for example, the lasso approach is the way to do it. Then you just lead it back from there basically. While still again, riding your own horse. Just don't let go of the aim button and you shouldn't let go of the rope.

For hunting I personally find that going around on your horse and aiming at random animals that pass by (so it auto-locks on them to check their stars) until you find one that is 3 stars is the best way to hunt them, they'll run away but you can track them or just shoot em in the head with deadeye with whatever gun is the recommended one while you're chasing them. I never really found much success with baits but they can help too if you want to stay in a specific spot instead of going around. I also recommend using binoculars a lot to study animals from afar, and scoped rifles can show the stars too when you're aiming at the animal despite it being really far. Also when you zoom in on the map it will show little icons of animals indicating it's an area you've visited where that specific species of animal is more common. Forgot to mention, even if you killed a 3 star animal if your horse walks over it it will bring down the quality all the way down.

Great playthrough so far John! Long time viewer, probably my first time commenting, but I've really been having a good time and looking forward to your updates. :D It's probably already been said, but the quality of the animal pelt is decided before you shoot it. Using the wrong gun or taking a bad shot will decrease the quality from there. You should hold RB to study animals when you have them targeted and you'll know their quality before you pull the trigger, and if you wanna bother with the ammo for the kill. A tip about sneaking up and getting that perfect shot -- when you use your Eagle Eye, there's white wisps coming off of Arthur and blowing in a certain direction. That's the wind direction, and you always want to be up wind from a hunt to increase your chances of staying unnoticed.

Tips regarding Arthur's weight - you can use the core drain rates on the detail page to see if you're increasing or decreasing based on how the percentages change. The quickest way to put weight on is eating big game meat, chocolate and alcohol, and continuing to eat when his cores are already full (when it stops making the 'ching!' bell noise). Weight doesn't show any changes though until after you sleep :) I hope that helps!

Yay, happy to see another upload. Hunting is so satisfying in this game man... I think I spent my entire Saturday just going for legendaries and perfect pelts. Dutch who? Edit: if you read this it’ll be long after the fact, but you asked how people hunt. I like to go to places where I know there will be animals I need (such as boars) and scope them out with the binoculars. You can see the star-grading that way (if it’s an unknown animal, Study it first) and also choose to track that particular animal. Then I make sure I have the right weapon for the clean kill and slowly follow it, crouched, with eagle eye as necessary. You can refresh the tracking by briefly going into EE so I usually will do that a lot. So far I haven’t used much in the way of bait. It took me FOREVER to track down 3-star badgers for all the camp upgrades, so now any time I see one I shoot one out of principle.

Still really enjoying this playthrough! Just ignore any nitpicking happening in the comments, I’ve found Rockstar Games to be very trial and error games. It’s taken me a couple of playthroughs of “Bully” and “GTA 5” to know all what to do. I personally think GTA 5 is as immersive as this one even though it’s older. The world is built in the same way for exploration. Hunting is an obviously bigger part of this game than that one since GTA 5 is set in present day, but it’s just as immersive. GTA 5 is a much more… I would say humor-based game though. It really embraces being silly and humor whereas this game has a little more of a serious tone probably due to the setting being the age of ending outlaws. I think these games have exceptional immersion, endless side quests/mini games, perfect voice acting, fun story telling, and look really good visually. Some flaws are overwhelming controls and directions flashing on screen at times that it’s hard to catch them and sometimes crazy glitches due to sandbox world loading issues, but they’re still incredible games. I love the hunting in this game in particular. It’s very rewarding when you finally get what you’re looking for. But I’ve rambled on enough in the comments. Only tips would be to remember to clean your guns because it’s affecting their ability to properly hit the targets. Don’t forget some of the mini quests from people in camp like Lenny was looking for a watch and I think Tilly wanted a necklace (?). Just to keep those things in mind before donating all of the loot. Not that it’s a big deal. The game rewards you for exploration. Be sure to always check around the fireplaces you see in random houses and places when you’re looting because that’s a spot used a lot people put cash in. When you start traveling up north, you may want to buy some winter clothing from the General Stores.
