Hi Angela, thank you so much for buying The Story Thief, my feminist retelling of Henry Lawson's short story, 'The Drover's Wife'. You are so right that retellings are increasingly popular, especially from a sidelined character, which is the case in my novel - in which I take the perspective of the drover's wife's unnamed infant daughter, resting on her mother's left hip, whom I have called Lillian. In the case of 'The Drover's Wife', there is a longstanding literary tradition of drover's wife retellings, and Australian writers have been putting their spin on this story since the late 70s with Murray Bail, Frank Moorhouse and Barbara Jefferis. As you rightly noted, Leah Purcell recently produced her indigenous reimagining (via play, novel and film!). My novel has been 10 years in the making, and weaves both Lawson's story and Russell Drysdale's painting of 'The Drover's Wife' through the narrative. Lillian's personal journey of love and loss is set against the backdrop of Australia's coming of age in art and literature, and as a former British colony. I do hope you'll enjoy it!!

There’s so many interesting ones here. Wow! I’ve meant to read the Christopher Isherwood. I didn’t know Lucy Worsley wrote biographies!

I watched the 84 Charing Cross Road movie many years ago starring Anthony Hopkins. Loved that quiet, bookish movie and picked up the book subsequently. The movie was rather faithful to the book. Both were great. The movie of A Single Man was excellent too. Again both the book and movie were great.

Hi Angela! Really enjoying your videos and I wanted to thank you for sharing your reading! I wanted to mention Helen Rebanks’ spouse as he has also written a couple of acclaimed books on nature and farming, The Shepherd’s Life and English Pastiral. He is James Rebanks. I haven’t read them but heard only good things if you are interested in reading more about the Rebanks’ lives after reading The Farmer’s Wife. Also can confirm the excellence of 84 Charing Cross Road and A Single Man, both the books and the movies. Happy reading!

Great variety of books! Remarkable Birds 🦢 looks beautiful and Secret Voices sounds so interesting. I’ve heard nothing but great things about James. I just read my first book by Percival Everett called The Trees and I loved it!! It was an amazing book. Enjoy! 📚

I love reading from the Miles Franklin longlist, I think Praiseworthy will win it this year or Edenglassie but really happy that Angela O'Keeff is making an appearance, loved her Night Blue a little while ago.

I am finding your offerings just perfect! I enjoyed the shellseekers many moons ago, and I must find it again! I like the idea of the women’s diary anthology as well. You always seem to find the most beautiful editions. Unfortunately corporate bookstores have killed off the independents in my city so there are no lovely stores to browse through. They are mostly Instagram offerings and other Goodreads popular reads etc. very uninspiring. Thanks for bringing these to our attention. ❤

@@AngelasBookcase And this afternoon, just like that there was a copy of Remarkable Birds on the shelf of my local bookshop! It's not there any more 😉And I realised that I'd been coveting the companion Remarkable Plants for a while. That will find it's way home too soon enough.

I adore Madeleine L'Engle's books. She is my favourite author. If you haven't read her non-fiction, I would highly recommend. Much of her work is spiritual memoir in nature and while some of her writing is a bit dated, I just love it. Secret Voices is now at the top of my must buy list!
