Oh, Sea Biscuit was recommended to me for the Mexico prompt by my kiddo.

ah racing in TJ? I had no idea. I'll check to see if my library has it. Thank you. Cheers to your smart kiddo who recommended it to you.

Seabiscuit that was recommended for “set in Mexico” would be perfect for the “about an animal” prompt too. Plus, it was an interesting and well-written book. Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth is the first of a trilogy that the same-named PBS show is based on. It’s a very popular memoir that should be pretty easy to get from a library. I look forward to following your progress 🙂

Thank you for the recommendations! I appreciate them. Shockingly my library has a copy of both books.It had crossed my mind to test the librarians with some of these prompts. It helps open their eyes to what they are missing. this has happened twice at two different library's. One was zero books about the Magna Carta and the second was zero books on the Great Depression. Crazy, right? I think I've seen the show Call the Midwife. How close is it to the book?
@nancyegee28045 күн бұрын
@ You are welcome! It was fun to think of some prompts. It’s been a while since I’ve read the Call the Midwife trilogy. I think there are some broad stroke similarities, but I don’t remember recognizing any specific characters or situations. I live in a small town. The library is beautiful but the shelves have more empty space than used. It’s a shame I can find more books to read from the jam-packed shelves of The Friends of the Library. I know you get headaches from ebooks. Have you tried changing the color - I read white print on black background and it has made a world of difference for me.
@BookZealots5 күн бұрын
@@nancyegee2804 I don't know how to change the backgrounds on ebooks, it would be read on my computer. I could try it. But the ebooks still come from the library and my library is very much like yours. The town we're closest to is about 2600, so we go to the bigger library and that town is about 12k, but the magna carta issue was in a town of over 300k: Lexington, KY. I'm going to try and figure out how to change the background on my computer. Thank you for the suggestion for that AND the books. 🤗

Hi hello and what a list! Some very cool prompts for sure, I might pick and choose a few if I run out of my reread!

Hi, hello~ I'm so glad you responded. I needed to verify that the dates you gave are for 2025. Because some people are trying to cheat and use past years and line up all of there books before the year starts. Waiting for the months is part of the challenge imo.

Maybe a book on Apache or Comanche takes place in Texas or Mexican territory ? A book in Sam Houston or the Alamo. Texas was once Mexican territory? Did the war of 1812 take place I. Texas or Mexico territory. I may explore those ideas to find a Mexico book. A historical figure that was born in Texas or Mexican territory. Billy the kid maybe? I have a book on Wyatt Earp I need to see if Mexico is in it. It’ll be fun to try to find books I already have to fit all the prompts.did any if the American wars take place in Mexican territory? Pioneer travel through Texas?
@BookZealots5 күн бұрын
The challenge is finding books I already own to fit the prompts, because my library rarely has books I want. However, because of the prompt suggestions, people are recommending books I have not read and of course the library has them. I shouldn't be surprised, but I still am. LOL I'm sure Prometheus has books regarding the Texas territory and skirmishes, but isn't that kind of cheating? 🤔 If I' desperate I'm totally calling it though. It's a challenge alright.
@user-iz6cc6lz3j-Vickie5 күн бұрын
@ we will call it not cheating!!!!! At least I will. !!! I was looking up books on Amazon best seller list and nyt best seller list and I have some of those. Some books I have fit more than one prompt. Done prompts I have no clue.

@@BookZealots I would join in but... I've done challenges like these for years... like the PopSugar Reading Challenge... 50 prompts, which I did every year from 2016 until 2021, then in 2022 I did 104 prompts with the Visual Theology Reading Challenge.. and I did some of those prompts the last 2 years. Now this year I've got something different planned. I do hope you enjoy reading books to fit all the prompts you got. I look forward to seeing where it takes you.

@@Eldertalk I've heard about the popsugar prompts, not at all Christian, that's a challenge indeed. I tried doing the theology one, but I was not impressed with it. Looking forward to what you have planned. Happy reading.

@@BookZealots The Christian prompts - he used some prompts repeatedly... within the 104. And I just don't want to read that many again. And PopSugar was okay for a few years but it got too woke for me. That's when I quit it. I like the prompts normally, but was already planning to do something different this year with exploring some specific genres in depth.

The Midwife’s Apprentice is children’s lit (middle grade?). I read it ages ago and I think I enjoyed it. There’s a nonfiction book (a diary maybe?) written by a Spanish conquistador about Mexico. I had it on my old Goodreads account but I can’t remember the title. Something about New Spain? I’ll look it up and edit my comment.
@BookZealots4 күн бұрын
I looked up your old account and found this book: The Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Díaz del Castillo, John Michael Cohen Is this it? I'll check to see if my library has it. It sounds interesting. I put it on my tbr on goodreads, but my library doesn't have it. =/ I might go to them and put them to the test and ask them to help me find a book set in Mexico. 😁 thank you for the middle grade book rec. That one the library does have! 👍👍

Do they need to be adult books? I'm pretty sure there are some Newbery winners set in Mexico and at least one about a midwife. Also, this year I read Lady Tan's Circle of Women which was very good. There was a prominent character in that book that was a midwife.

I had 30 picked out yesterday, when my daughter came home she handed me 5 more. I'm heading to my big home library shortly. Em doesn't know where her midwife book is but she knows the title so we might find it somewhere. (She picked up a stomach bug when she was out and I can't ask her to share presently.) I used Google to look for ideas on the female pirate but they all appear to be half dressed kind of books so if you have recommendations let me know.

I have the pirate prompt! And my husband swapped out a couple others and said "you'll like these much better". I'm missing 8 for a blackout. A couple we have books, we just can't find them.

Who will you be reading about for priate prompt? My library is a bust. I might not be able to get a black out. It will depend on them entirely. I might go to the librarians and show them how deplorably inadequate their selection is. LOL I'm feeling salty today.

@BookZealots We actually had a pirate section in our bigger library. Who knew? (I need to go through there more often!) We have a book called "The Mammoth Book of Pirates" by Jon E Lewis and it has a section on women pirates. Apparently, they were deadlier than the men. The whole book is about 450 pages.
