I know it was read to me, but I don't think I've ever read it myself, unless I read it to Prometheus. I know what you mean, most content creators post the "best books of" or "top" books or best 24 books of the year or best 10 books, etc. ad nauseam. The Midwife’s Apprentice is children’s lit (middle grade?). I read it ages ago and I think I enjoyed it. There’s a nonfiction book (a diary maybe?) written by a Spanish conquistador about Mexico. I had it on my old Goodreads account but I can’t remember the title. Something about New Spain? I’ll look it up and edit my comment.

I absolutely Positively Freaking Love This! I wish that I had kept notes so that I could do this. I will keep notes in 2025. I do remember though that in the book "On Hallowed Ground: The Story of Arlington National Cemetery" by Robert M. Poole. The land and House was awarded Back to the Lee's descendant and had he wanted too he could have made them dig up every grave and move every monument in Arlington National Cemetery! That one Union Officer made the Lee's Plantation house and grounds a cemetery to Spite The Lees. But the Lee's descendant took the money instead of being a bad guy. According to this book the court ruled in favor of the Lees because R.E. Lee's wife did send the money for the taxes but the Union refused it. Thank you for sharing this! -James & Bella!
@BookZealots5 күн бұрын
Thank you James~ I appreciate your enthusiasm. I already have On Hallowed Ground on my goodreads to read. If you talked about it, that's probably why it's on my list. Sadly, my library doesn't have it. Would you happen to know how much acreage was given back to the Lee descendant? This is great news. In the book I read, the Lee's weren't offered money for the house/property and their tax payment was refused. I know the home was used during the war. But it was illegally seized. Now I'm curious about why the gov offered money for the home/property. They knew they had illegally seized it. And it sounds like the descendent was a sell out. I would have taken the home and property and just left the soldiers. It was 1100 acres and the civil war cemetary was about 200. Absolutely I would have taken it back.
@Littlebiglibrary5 күн бұрын
@@BookZealots If I remember correctly the Government rewarded Him (the descendent) back the land. He now owned the land. The reason they offered him money was because the Government now wanted to buy and own the land because by that time the cemetery was well established and it would have cost a fortune to dig up every grave and move every monument to different land. Plus that section of land was so conveniently located near Washington D.C. The Government at first didn't consider it illegally seized because of the war and then they said Mrs. Lee didn't pay the taxes, but she did TRY to pay the taxes and that is how they won it back. I considered that book to be my number one favorite book of 2024. -James. edit: And the descendent did what was considered the Right Thing by selling it back. Although I should probably read specifically about Samuel Adams at some point… just to be fair. Do you end up connecting with (or vehemently disliking) historical figures while you’re reading about them. Like they are fictional characters or still alive or something. I find it way too easy to use not feeling well as an excuse for comfort food. Which is a recipe for disaster, since I have activity intolerance (actual medical term: not code for lazy) and rarely have I day where I *don’t* feel unwell, at least at some point. So I’m getting back to calorie counting consistently (just in in time for Christmas!), which has been the only effective way I’ve controlled my diet and weight since becoming chronically ill. I’m going to try to stay strict on my calorie counting over Christmas… it’s just too hard for me to be disciplined in my eating and calorie counting if I give myself a pass. One day becomes a week, becomes a month, becomes a year. Sounds like that must have been a good orzo salad!
@BookZealots7 күн бұрын
Hi Tahlia! I've never heard of activity intolerance. It made me think of when a physical trainer told me I was stressing out my body everytime I ran (for excercise) and that's why I wasn't losing weight. Back then I thought she was crazy. LOL She was actually ahead of most doctors. the other day I had to make a really hard decision and schedule the even and I was super sad and grabbed a licorice. Then I was whining about how awful it tasted then that started the conversation of "how do people eat comfort junk food when they're sad?" The food tastes awful. I remember this as a kid too.
@tahlia__nerds_out7 күн бұрын
@ Warning: I kind of wrote a book here… I believe that activity intolerance is the nursing diagnosis, whereas doctors tend to use exercise intolerance as the diagnosis. It’s essentially the same thing. A lot of times, nursing diagnoses for our patient careplans have a different wording so that it doesn’t sound like we are giving an official physician diagnoses. Nursing diagnoses tend to more descriptive, so as to better guide patient care for that shift, as well as to create a clear paper trail and paint a picture for why certain measures were taken for that shift. Physician diagnoses, in contrast, tend to be more technical in nature, and are the official diagnoses. Exercise intolerance is the limited ability to perform physical activities in the way that a healthy person of your age group would normally be able to. Things like heart failure and copd are common causes of exercise intolerance. For me, the cause is probably the combination of my three main diagnoses, with pots (dysautonomia) being the worst offender, closely followed by my mcas (an immune system condition). Because my autonomic nervous system does not perform normal functions (like circulating blood, for example) the way it should, so I’ll get lightheaded or feel unwell quite easily, initially because of the dystautomia, but quickly followed by my immune system letting me know that it is displeased by whatever activity my body decides is too much that day. On my worst days, the symptoms will show up when I’m attempting to do the activities (like cooking, cleaning, or even recording videos), and very often, even during normal day, I will be wiped out the rest of the day if I do more than my body deems reasonable… which can change with weather, type of activity, or when my body just decides that it doesn’t want to play nice. Activity or Exercise intolerance can look different for different people with different diagnoses, and sometimes even for people with the same diagnoses. Someone else on booktube shares my diagnoses, but I could not go on walks the way she does unless I want to pay for it after (or even during) the walk. Someone with copd or with heart failure might not be able to because their conditions would make them short of breath with a certain level of activity. If someone is unfamiliar with the terms activity or exercise intolerance, I think that they can initially sound like another way of expressing laziness. They just aren’t terms used or heard by most people outside of the medical field. Sorry for the essay; I got carried away! 🤓 Comfort food is a funny thing, and can be so different from person to person! Licorice wouldn’t personally be my idea of a comfort food either, but I’m sure that there is someone who considers it one. I think a lot of time, besides sweets of some sort, comfort foods tend to be heavier, warm foods (mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, chicken noodle soup, etc). But I can see where if someone really likes orzo salad (for example 😁), it could be a food they might find themselves going to when they feel sad or unwell. And mood eating can be soooo bad for weight (and health) management! It’s so important to develop good eating habits when young, to make it easier to have healthy eating habits when one is older. While fad diets can help in the short term, a lot of times it’s just about eating a balanced diet and calories in being less than calories out. If you read all that, I applaud you. Let’s see if KZbin lets me keep the comment…

@@tahlia__nerds_out LOL I'm so glad youtube allowed the comment. it's so persnickety. A lot of what you wrote described my husband and his MS. Some days he gets wore out just going about his normal routine and other days he's fine. Yes, the temperature can also play a big part in that as well. Blankets also can't be too heavy. He and I were talking the other day about exercise. He needs to exercise, but at this point would it do more harm than good? He did, however, get lazy and should have exercised early on when he was first diagnosed. Then he got lazier still relying too much on his scooter. And yes, everyone will have differing experiences with their health issues. Both of his parents had MS, but to varying degrees. His father had it much worse, but outlived his wife, because she got cancer. Regarding the comfort food, I don't think I have any. 🤔 I'm curiouse about that. If he buys junk food and opens it up, he eats the whold thing that day. I can eat just one and be fine. But I'm not a chocolate person. It's so hard to find good quality chocolate. LOL That's funny about the RK jr picture. 😬 Better eat right or he'll give you a scolding. Hmmm, I wonder what his weakness treat is. Based on what you told me about your dh going to the fast foods, I believe that you're not the one buying the junk food.

@BookZealots He'll be fine. Arnica cream heals amazingly fast. Coincidentally, I started reading an Anthony Trollope book Christmas at something (I don't have it handy, sorry). The husband is complaining he's sick, acting like he's on deaths door and the wife has no idea if he's really caught a cold or if he wants to get out of a gathering with the inlaws. 3 of the 4 of us have colds now and one is just like the husband and one is just like the wife in the story. The other of us sickies is on my computer reading library ebooks since we haven't got to the library for her 15 books/week habit.

@@Fernie4243 That is very good news. I had to look up Arnica cream. I've never heard of it. I think another content creator mentioned having osteo something or other and maybe the cream can help ease some of her pain? I saw your Trollope book on goodreads, but your telling about the characters and your family is hilarious. 🤣 Good thing your dear daughter can read ebooks. Has she exhausted your home library?

@BookZealots osteo means bone and I don't think it seeps into the flesh enough to heal bones, at least in the cream or gel. There may be another way of using it. I'll check my herb books. Arnica is widely used in Italy. A friend's son had an accident there and that's what they gave him. One of my sisters told me about it5 or 6 years ago and I have sung its praises several times a year. Don't know what I'd do without it. There is a herb that heals broken bones, but I can't remember what it was. I've never needed it. I'll look in my books tomorrow and if possible find a video with the information. Em has read all the kids and middle grade books we have, plus some classics, finance, medical, sci-fi in our library multiple times. She also has a stack of books we said she should/recommend her read and she is working through them. I think I mentioned she moved her bed into our smaller library which has Roman and Greek history, plus a lot of our Catholic and Christian nonfiction, Russian, Youth classics, books of speeches, and homesteading which she is welcome to read without asking. She likes lighter stuff too and that we lack.
@BookZealots7 күн бұрын
@@Fernie4243 Yes, yes, I'm aware of what osteo means, but when I looked up the arnica cream you mentioned, part of the search that came up: arnica gel improves pain and function in osteoarthritis. 🤷♀ Maybe the gel is more potent than the cream? Maybe it only works in certain parts of the body? Maybe the doctors are lying? The search also mentioned side effects and I discovered I wouldn't be able to use it due to allergies. And an herb that heals bones? I've never heard of that either. Oh yes! I do remember you mentioning your daughter moving her bed into the library. Brilliant. What does she want to do when she grows up? It seems like she has a massive thirst for knowledge. I LOVE that. 💗

Hi, hello and that orzo salad looked really good! I actually took a photo of a scale reading at the beginning of the year and will be comparing it to one next week at the end of the year so I'm excited to see the full year end result. As of now I'm down about 15lbs consistently and sometimes it even goes to 20 down. I've been eating a lot less snacks this year than I normally have so I think that helped, plus I walk a lot even though that doesn't seem like it burns a lot of calories. I might get back to weight lifting next year since I've taken about a 6 month break from it but we'll see. I'd like to be under 200lbs by the end of next year fingers crossed that I can diet and work out to get down there! Thanks for sharing and see ya on the next one

Well done on your progress! How do you feel? My older son lifts weights. He's one of "those" guys if you know what I mean? Up at 4:30am etc. LOL I have a great story about him though, so I'm glad he is one of those guys. But wow! Twenty pounds. I want to lose about 20 pounds. But it's not so much a number, more than how toned I get and so yes, lifting weight is part of my workout. But the muscle definition can't be scene if the fat doesn't drop off. Walking is great exercise. Well done! I hope you reach your goal. 🎉

@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff doing as the Georgians' do? Is there any cuisine you miss from home and is there a favorite Georgian cuisine that is your favorite? My husband is first born American on his mother's side. =)

@BookZealots There are things I miss from UK like custard. I saw a ranking of 48 European Cuisines and #1 was Italy, #4 was Georgia and #13 was UK. My father was from Halifax, so we had some dishes from Lancashire and Yorkshire growing up like Lancashire Hotpot and Yorkshire Pudding. You can google "Georgian Cuisine" And "English Cuisine" To see the variety of dishes. Georgians use walnuts, pomegranate, cilantro and dill a lot. When I cook I usually cook spaghetti bologna use or chili con carne both sound foreign but we're common for us growing up and done in an English way. Today Chicken Tikka Massala is the most popular British dish, first created in an Indian restaurant in Glasgow. My mother wasn't keen on spicy food so like your mother in law pepper was the principle spice in her cooking. Georgia is also the birthplace of wine, archaeological evidence shows wine production in Georgia goes back 8000 years. I first drank wine when I moved here, growing up in the Methodist Church the communion 'wine' was very sweet and non-alcoholic. I could write more but this is already a rather lengthy comment.

6:04 crochet blankets *do* take up so much space! But they are sooo warm! There is something homey about crochet (or knit) blankets. We have them all over the house, and the ones my Mom has made are draped practically on every couch and rocking chair. It makes the house feel cozy. The ones my sister makes are so tight, they’re practically bullet-proof! Personally, I knit blankets rather than crochet th. Not so shockingly, I’ve only finished one blanket that’s not a baby blanket.

Hi, hello and it looks way too cold there to be outside! Sorry to hear about your chicken :( What a bummer! If I could learn a language it'd most likely be Spanish. It's the most spoken one here and it'd be nice to know a second language, like ya know most of the world lol but that's a whole other conversation there. But on a serious note not having someone around to practice with is the biggest hurdle to learning a new language I think I've been doing up my end of year wrap-ups for later videos and realized that I need a break from TV next year, like in a big big way. I'll still be doing the re-read year so that'll be fun, but instead of TV next year I'd like to catch up on my PC and PS5 game backlog. Plus GTA6 SHOULD be coming out towards the end of next year so I'll have that to look forward to. On the serious side I've been thinking about going back for my Master's degree too, but we'll see. I need to just bite the bullet and sign up and get to it but I've been talking myself out of it forever so I gotta get over that big hump first That chicken and rice looked so good! When I lived in San Diego I worked a little on Spanish in high school. I did better with the written word than the spoken. Go figure. But then I worked near the border and I was surrounded by it and accidentally picked up on things. My coworker tested me once. She was having a conversation with someone else and then asked me "what did I just say?" I don't know I wasn't listening. She says, what did you hear? Something about the border patrol? She says yes and that she had said it all in spanish. I didn't believe her, but the woman she was conversing with did not like me and she was also bilingual and she was surprised and nodding her head. LOL If you, and I highly encourage you, go back to school for your masters, you should take a spanish course too. =) What would be a bigger regret? Wishing you did? Or actually getting it? OH no, I got a masters degree, oh poor me? 🤣 Do it, do it, do it! PC, PS5, GTA6? huh? Are they all games or gaming systems? I'm clueless. hahaha, outsmarted by a rice cooker. Did it come with instructions? You're right, rice can be cooked in a pot just as well. We've already made the chicken korma again and tweaked it a bit so it was more flavorful. It was much better the second time.

Right! Even just being around another language is so much better than doing the apps or using KZbin videos PC is a gaming computer (personal computer), PS5 is the PlayStation 5 and GTA is Grand Theft Auto it's kind of a big deal in the game world lol And I think I did the instructions right, the tub even has measurements!
