In November 2008, a British Frigate and a Russian Frigate were called upon to help a Danish-flagged cargo ship called the MV Powerful. By the end of the day, two teams of Royal Marines were launched to conduct a boarding operation against an enemy dhow.

@@mall231 The thing is, Russia really has no use for an aircraft carrier right now. It simply exists so that they can say "look, we have a carrier". The state of an aircraft carrier that isn't needed and isn't intended to fight anybody really says nothing about the capabilities of Russian ships that are actually combat-ready. And you don't need a carrier to fight pirates. As for ruling the waves, I'd say that's the country that has as many carriers as the rest of the world together. I'll give you a hint, it's not Britain.

Why were the pirates brought before a kenyan court? Why not theInternational Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Germany?
@LS-jv9hp
@LS-jv9hp 2 жыл бұрын
It comes due to a slew of difficulty of international laws which make convicting pirates very hard. Germany for example wouldn't have the jurisdiction to detain them for international piracy due to the working of German Law since no German nationals or German registered ships are involved. Kenya on the other hand laws are made in a way in which they can detain and convict international pirates if they attack any nations ships and crews and have been given the job and support by the UN, EU, and other organisations and nation states to operate a special court specifically for piracy in international waters.

Putin isn't really the issue - or at least he's just one part of it. Putin has always been willing to work with the west as long as they were willing to work with him, in fact not so long ago some groups in Russia used to criticize him for being too friendly with the west. But Putin, whatever his faults, puts Russia first and defends Russia's interests. And Russia under Putin has rebuilt to the point where it can do that. It's NATO that can't deal with Russia being strong enough and willing to stand up to them.

@@user-rf9mx4qf7z When I read Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn the characters seem to me to be similar to the English of the same period. The British are more self-deprecating, the Russians more stoic. @@redberries8039 Bear in mind with Tolstoy that it's a) 200 years ago and b) his main characters (reflecting his own background) belong to an upper class that was deliberately modelled on western Europe. Solzhenitsyn is more relevant to modern Russian culture, though even there the end of the Soviet Union and the 90s have left an imprint. I don't deny that there are similarities. People are people, I'm sure you can find a lot of parallels between any two cultures you like. But on the whole, I find that Russians are most similar to Americans - not the liberal city types, but the rural, more conservative, independently-minded kind of American. Although younger Russians in major cities are increasingly becoming more like the other type. I think the response to coronavirus shows some of the differences pretty well. In Britain, when they brought in new restrictions, most people followed them (and were angry with the ones who didn't). In the US, when they introduced restrictions, people went out to protest. In Russia, when they brought in restrictions, everybody shrugged, followed them for a week, and then life went on pretty much as normal. P.S. I don't think there's as much of the stoicism left in British culture as they like to think. But one thing Russians and Scots at least definitely have in common - they both do love their drink.
