Beautiful work! I have worked with wood for many years! My mother-in-law gave me my father-in-laws woodworking tools after his demise as I was the only relative interested in woodworking. He was a Japanese furniture maker and made exquizite pieces. I just look at his tools as I do not consider myself good enough to use them yet. Your work reminds me of him.Thank you!

Exquisitely done again Dorian! I see some of the "needlessly complicated" crowd are out in some comments rather missing the point. Not only do they miss that this series is to demonstrate, test and improve your skill. But also that this type of scarf joint has an extremely high shear strength for axial loading. So if you're erecting a fence, yeh, it's needless. But, if you're supporting exterior walls under high compression, this type of scarf joint is essential. There's a few 1000 year old temples that will testify to this ;)

Dorian, Having watched every one of your videos, I can only assume you are a hermit or monk. My wife would have left me long ago if I invested the time and effort you have in anything but her. Thank you for memorializing the artistry of these masterpieces of engineering. My only objection to the end results is that their beauty cannot be easily appreciated by the casual observer. You almost have to already know what you are looking at to understand the complexity or watch the actual assembly and disassembly of the joints. I wish to build something like a table which would display clearly upon it's upper surface a joint demonstrating the process to form wider surfaces rather than just making corners and longer pieces. I don't especially care for the "bow tie" effect. My ultimate goal is to build a table as a gift for my sister. I have an idea for a table joined by the legs that protrude though the top similar to the locking pegs in a scarf joint with additional more common techniques joining the lower legs for stiffness. Unfortunately, it's still just an idea! Suggestions? Thank you, again! Jim

NO WONDER ITS SO DIFFICULT TO FIND THE JOINTS IN JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE!!! That joint from the outside looks like a groove in a post with a board sitting in it. In actuality, its a locking joint that is beautiful artwork, meant to last many generations and NEVER EVER BE SEEN :( but AMAZING!! I love the simplicity of the finish of the joint but the amount of forethought required to use it in a practical application and execute such a joint well.

I work at a custom interior manufacturer, and I have to say we rely so heavily on glue nowadays! (and we have to use shit materials because of costs, but that aside.) It's good to see how real joints are made, I'll definitly be trying them at home!

I'd have chopped the octogon with a saw, then switched to the plane. Really cool joint! I might try it in something soon.
