I somehow convinced my dad to watch this film a few weeks ago by just randomly recommending it. He’s in his 70’s so has a very specific old person sense of humour. When I asked him the next day if he enjoyed it he said he had tears streaming down his face as it was “the funniest shit” he’d ever seen in his life.

It's funny because back in the day when the karate craze was going on back in the 80's after all the martial arts movies started coming out Detroit actually did have some of the best martial artists around. Flint Michigan too can still drive through that ghost town area of Flint and drive by a bunch of shuttered martial arts dojo's. My dad has all kinds of stories about them from back when he was a young man.

My parents took me to the movie theater in 2004 when this came out ... I was born in 97 so I was about 7 years old back then 🤣 They both had no idea what the movie was they just figured it was fine for kids since the characters are puppets, apparently my dad got a few looks of disagreement and made us leave at the puke scene. Overall awesome memory even if I don't remember it that well.

How are parents so clueless? I remember volunteering when I was 16 at the daycare I used to attend as a kid. One of the counsellors once mentioned South Park and ALL the kids piped up that they watched it too! I was dumbfounded. I guess all their parents just figured it was a cartoon so it must be for kids? Matt and Trey have said that filming this was the worst period in their lives if that helps in understanding how difficult it was. There were nearly 300 individual marionettes and around 1000 costumes. The film had to be constantly rewritten to accommodate the limited movement of the marionettes. Since they were all used to a different degree the batteries that controlled the facial movement would die at different times with no warning so that would often ruin takes and they got in it with the MPAA who kept trying to give the film an NC-17 rating. They couldn't even screen the film for review even by the producers because it was still being shot and scored right up till it's release in cinemas so critics were just given a 20 minute sizzle reel of whatever footage they had ready to go. I'm honestly amazed they even wanted to keep doing South Park after that. During the final season of Stargate SG-1 there's a segment in the 200th episode where they use the same company that made the marionettes for Team America and do a comedic recreation of an early scene from the first episode. It's genius. Even for that small segment it took quite awhile to film.

That's like the saying the Mickey Rooney portrayal of an asian guy in Breakfast at Tiffany's is "the most accurate and true depiction of asian culture." Such an absolutely brainless comment.

There’s a feature on the disc of the making of this movie. Matt and Trey were miserable and wish they never thought of the puppet idea. It’s a throwback to the Thunderbirds show from way back. There are also interviews with them on talk shows talking about how they’ll never make a puppet movie again 🤣 Happy 4th of July guys!

Trivia: Back when the movie was in production Parker & Stone did a joke on the movie executives. They showed the opening scene w the cheesy puppet and crudely drawn background. They were worried until the scene continued and showed the real puppets and scenery. Haha

@dmt Handmade I do remember those THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO !!😃 this was very much a tribute to those supermarionation classics and yet sooo politically incorrect 😆 this was almost painfully funny ! there was also a DIRE STRAITS video for Calling Elvis that done in the same style by the original creator Gerry Anderson . you check that out keep quality comedy alive Have a good one CHEERS .🙏

Apparently the film-makers were big fans when they were kids but thought it was all a bit silly. They developed huge respect for Gerry Anderson when making this film, frequently wondering how he managed to do some of the things they were attempting to do.There's a fair few subtle references to Anderson stuff scattered through this one.

Seeing movies like this, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters in the movie theater in front of a live audience really hits differently. Where everyone around you is like "I don't know what the HELL i'm watching, but the 40% of us left that didn't walk out in the first 15 minutes are just having the best time" It's like.... if you're in a theater and you're one of the ones who stay around while most of the people are just walking out of the movie, you look around at the people left and you just think "These are my kinda people. They get me."

Saw this in theaters as a 14 year old with a couple friends. Loved the movie but I remember the ushers not letting us back into the theater after we went to get our seats then left to buy snacks in the lobby. My friend's dad (who bought our tickets) was planning on doing some work on his laptop in the Starbucks next door but he ended up having to buy a ticket as well so we could watch the movie.

Those of us in the UK who grew up with Thunderbirds, we looked at that sex scene and thought, those are the Lady Penelope scenes we always wanted to see. "That's it, Parker, put the Rolls in the garage." "Righty-ho, m'Lady. Is that halright?" "Oh that's excellent, Parker. Jeff, come over here - you know there's room for two in my garage."
