This is probably giving her too much credit, but my take is that shes not actually trying to shed her child star image but rather seem edgy to her built in fan base, who are too young to understand how cringe it is. I think she was losing them and knew she couldn’t possibly entertain a fan base older than 10. “Effed around” was the evidence I needed for this: she could have said fucked (and lost her pg13 rating preteens loooove to think they’re cool for swimming in) or she could have said messed and lost their interest. The problem is that… she went from being this cartoonish bubblegum pop persona to a cartoonish “rock” persona… it’s like going from barbie to monster high… like they are the same type of thing, just styled slightly different but still very kid friendly. Like Miley gave a total 180 change both in image, music and overall behavior. Britney did the same, although she didn’t have to drastically change her looks. It’s this that most people who try the good girl gone bad pipeline don’t understand… drastically changing your looks isn’t enough for it to work and it’s not even necessary.
