The "shock" value trick is old. 1976, Vivienne Westwood, Malcom McLaren... The Sex Pistols. The Punk movement. Even back in 1967, Hans Keller asking Syd Barrett and Roger Waters on the BBC "why has it got to be so terribly loud?" The Floyd had just had their first single Arnold Layne banned. But by today's standards, what Jojo Siwa is doing is not shocking whatsoever. Quite the opposite. In 2024, you've got to embrace the Alt-Right to be seen as a provocateur.

Yeah she could’ve taken like a year break before her rebrand or at least a few months to give her time to fully adjust into it and HUMBLY re-enter the world with her new image. It’s not even like it was a 180 because she had those 3 years after coming out where she had her initial change and adjustment period into the teen/young adult queer world. If she had released karma in say June 2021, then it would be a pretty 180 in the span of half a year. But having only a half baked transition and calling it the switch of a decade/century/lifetime whatever is just giving narcissistic. Let others call you that don’t shove it down their throats. If you wanna say it afterwards, go for it but saying it before it was even released is not going to get any admiration

@@princessofjedi Okay, so speaking as someone else who's a little older, this is hard to explain but it IS really different than how it used to be. Like, even back in the early 2000s. A lot of songs had music videos that were just as, if not more, iconic than the songs they were attached to. And I mean BIG. Etched into the cultural DNA big. You may not listen to Brittany Spears, but you KNEW her schoolgirl gone bad outfit from Baby One More Time. You may not like MCR, but you could remember the spectacle of Welcome to the Black Parade or the antlers in Fall Out Boy's Sugar, We're Going Down. And then there was Literally. Every. Gaga. Video. And in the 80s/90s, it was even crazier since it was all new and people had no idea what to do with music in a visual medium! They'd drop some artists into a studio on a shoestring budget and they'd pull out a Video Killed the Radio Star or whatever the fuck A Flock of Seagulls was doing. It mostly comes down to exposure. Nowadays, songs from big artists get music videos, sure. But unless an artist is looking to make a statement of some kind, you don't get it as ubiquitous as we used to. You have to pretty much already be into the artist to even see the music video for their latest song, and you probably had to look it up for yourself. But in the classic MTV days, Weezer and Faith Hill played between Mariah and Linkin Park. Studios had incentive to make them stand out because people like... actually WATCHED them. Like on TV. On repeat. For entertainment. I dunno, it's just a very different approach to how it's all done now. I'm more likely to know a song from a TikTok meme than I am its official video. Not saying that it used to be better, it's just a different flavor, you know?

Miley also didn’t still look and sound like a kid when she was in her wrecking ball era. I think she’s dead serious but to me she just comes off as a wannabe. She’s wearing sunglasses during that interview for goodness sakes she took that from 2013 too.

No and the fact that she was 20 as well. Like same age as Jojo. And yet if you showed me it and didn’t tell me anything I’d assume she was at least 25-27. Maybe 24 at youngest. Yet Jojo I would say 18 max. And freshly 18 at that like 1-2 months

the most original thing she’s created is the jojo bow bow. she buys the rights to the song and claims it’s hers. she copies someone else’s aesthetic and claims it’s hers. even her style of abusing children is copied. everything she claims to be is copied and the only person she successfully plagiarizes is abby.

I really wish celebrities would stop comparing themselves to "normal people" and saying that they don't have "normal lives". What does that even mean ? They act like us "normal people" just wake up, go to work and watch them on the internet. maybe that's what some people do, but most people aren't that boring. us "normal people" live extortionary lives and do abnormal things everyday. Just because we aren't all wanna be pop stars doesn't mean we haven't seen or done anything interesting. Jojo's lil rebrand happens to the most uninteresting thing I've seen all day, let alone the past year lol

I get what you’re saying but when they say they didn’t have normal lives growing up its because their parents were pushing them onstage and in front of cameras as children and were trained to perform which is not normal or natural. It’s like a circus animal vs a house pet or wild animal.

Nobody “hated” Miley Cyrus when she had her rebellious teenager phase. I was an adult, so I thought it was a bit cringe, but I recognised it as what it was: a former Disney Princess trying to forge her own way and “prove” that she was an adult now by being as shocking as possible. I can respect that and I certainly respect what she has made of her career. There’s not much about Jojo Siwa I respect, unfortunately.
@Bree4207 ай бұрын
nah nah, don't lie. I don't like Jojo Siwa all that much. But back then Miley was shit upon so bad, lots of people started saying she lost her mind and cause children to be immoral cos of wrecking ball music video + twerking + the pole dance thing I think those were the big ones, very much in a misogynistic britney 2.0 way. Some of the reactionaries even questioned her singing skills. It was only a few years after that people started warming up to her again and now it's okay to be her fan again.

I was not 8, and I remember when Miley did her rebrand. The thing is, adults were mad at Miley, but her target demographic was NOT. People LOVED Miley. And I especially remember when Bangerz came out. The more she talks, the more I realize Jojo thinks she's Hannah Montana, and she just changes her wig.
@07Flash11MRC7 ай бұрын
I agree. that seems to be what's going on. Tbh, as a Miley fan I'm actually offendend by JoJo bringing her into this. JoJo's rebrand has got nothing on what Miley had to go through in order to have the legal rights to HER OWN NAME and then some. JoJo isn't owned by a company, she is free. She'll never have a moment like Miley, because - as she said in this interview - there is not going to be anyone who has so much power legally speaking that they can stop JoJo from doing whatever she wants. Miley had to work hard for that.

Jojo is a pick me girl and always has been a pick me girl, especially awhile back when she kept completely slamming Candace Cameron Bure, like she attacked that woman for no reason except she wanted attention and drama so that people would look at her. The way that she talks about her "music" is so self centered, and she has this attitude about her like "ahaha yeah look what I diiiiddd, I'm like SOOO cool and such a baddie." This girl is literally still a child. She just got out of her teens. She is clearly still very immature. And annoying at that. I was indifferent to her in like 2016 but now I legitimately cannot stand her.

My irritation with Jojo when she said that people were nice when she was 18 and 19 then flipped when she turned 20 isn’t a matter of her image. It was because she was still clinging onto people who, though kind to her, were MONSTROUS to others. She's so self-obsessed that she won't acknowledge anyone's pain but her own, but her mother and the Dance Moms environment trained her to even internalize and ignore *that,* so she can't self-reflect at all! People were nice when you turned 18 because they wanted to give you room to grow, change, and find yourself outside of your toxic bubble, Jojo. But you chose to embrace it instead overcome what it's done to you and other girls that get thrust into show business. THAT is why people don't like you in your 20s. It isn't the world's problem, it's you.

to your point at 28:23 she went on call her daddy and literally said "how old are you?" to alex who then said 29, and she said "seeee its people your age judging me" and I saw a stitch of someone being like "ummm jojo im 20 and also judging you so". She just refuses to take criticism unless she is the one channeling it through her own lens, like having a friend making a joke about her is okay only if she approves it. She wants to be miley so bad but miley did not get approval from anyone or call herself the next messiah of pop, she just did what she wanted, and accepted the good and bad with it.
