Omg, I was so disappointed. I left the theater going “wow, Todd Phillips really doesnt know how to do a musical. I use the Color Purple 2023 for example - that was a perfect blend of dialogue into song that moved the story along brilliantly. This - the music is the worst part of it - I love musicals so when my eyes are rolling when a song started - thats a problem! 🤦🏾‍♂️

Nice review. As an audio person, I might suggest your recording-room have some ‘soft materials’ (couch, bed, pillows, carpet, blankets) in it. It will absorb the room reverb & your voice will sound ‘closer’. Rooms with hard surfaces (especially flat parallel/right angle walls/floor/ceiling) will bounce sound the worst. You’ll be amazed 👍

I reviewed this on my site and lmao I said the same thing on there and twitter. Phillips did not want to make a sequel and he was like "okay, watch me blegh this film!" Also, a lot of the singing, even from Gaga, is not good. Someone told me they didn't want her to sing like a singer. Just an awful film, but I admire Phillips dedication to tanking it so they'll leave him alone.

Based on the reviews, it does appear that the director had to make a sequel because the first installment performed so well. I had no idea that the first film made a billion dollars. That's pretty insane. From what I'm gathering from the reviews, I wonder if the director had a separate film in mind (a musical), but the studio wouldn't allow him to move forward with it until he made the Joker sequel. I bet he combined what he was considering for another film with Folie A Deux. He wasn't prepared for this. So sad.

They could have did a sequel. They could have focused on him establishing his identity as Joker. How Harley Quinn found him but not being manipulative, he manipulates her because he doesn’t trust anyone n put her through test to see if she is really for him. His cronies bust him out of jail/court and Quinn established a place for them underground and he start to build his enterprise. Without the musical!!!! It could of been perfect

I wished they made a standalone sequel to the Joker focusing on a grounded representation of another villain like The Riddler or Harvey Dent. I felt that all was needed to be said with the Joker character in the first one, but the world could be further explored through the lives of other villains in the making.

Great review. I don't think Fleck was doing a blaccent when he was repping himself. There's a trope of the older Southern gentleman with a drawl. There's an old show called Matlock where the title character has that drawl.

I saw it. I enjoyed it. The first one was with him, losing his meds. This one was him on and off his meds and a fan girl that stopped him in the ward. It was good. I don’t believe it needs all this criticism. I would say DC needs to stop with the dark ass movie concepts. Joaquin Phoenix was amazing and so was Gaga but this genre just doesn't appeal to the traditional comicbook/superhero fan. It was really dark and with music translating the mental state of Joker and Harley ppl will just be confused or go to sleep like my husband did. It was too much to process. I would even go as far to say if you're struggling with your mental health or sexual trauma don't watch it.

You know, I didn't even go see the first film--or watch it all the way through on TV. I'd probably prefer this, if only because I like some of the songs they use, and I don't care much for Phoenix's Joker--the make up is wrong. So is the film giving him a defined origin. Joker is a mystery nobody can solve, and to solve him is to ruin him. (Yes, I also say this about Jack Nicholson's Joker). But there shouldn't have been any sequel at all. I think the only way this could have succeeded is by keeping the budget low, and all the nitpicking covers up the fact that the original film wasn't very good, and just succeeded by way of star power and novelty. This had no franchise potential, because Joker here is not a supervillain--he's just a deluded head case. Most of what happens in the first film makes no sense, and it's strongly implied it's all in his head. So once you start taking it literally, it falls to pieces. It's the movie audience's fault this happened--they made it such a huge hit, the studio had to have another. Phillips and Phoenix had way too much power, as a result of this, and they used it for an ego trip. Surprise, surprise. But I do look forward to the musical numbers. Once they're on KZbin. I like Lady Gaga singing standards. Much better than the songs she wrote herself. Which are okay, but I just like the old songs better. I was born that way. ;)

Anyone who went to go see this new installment of the Joker gets no sympathy and deserves to have their wallet upset at them. Suckahzz! If truth be told, part one was a blatant misdirect. It was really about the failure of the mental health system to provide adequate diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Period. There was nothing at the end of that movie that left me with the feeling that that guy could in any way, shape or form, become the head of a criminal organization. It was “art” I guess, but it was definitely NOT the origins of a REAL super villain. Upon leaving the theater and chatting with friends, we gave it. “Meh”. Vowed that would be the first and last time we’d see it. When it hit a billion we all said: “you know part 2 is coming and DC is going to be emboldened to make it worse”. lol. You got me the first time, never again. There was nowhere for them to go, but down this path after the first one.
