People like the Stepmom who would say and do such things to a kid in this day and age make me think about my paternal great-aunt, my grandpa’s sister. In the late 1940’s, she and her husband chose to adopt and instead of adopting an infant, they chose to adopt a 5 year old boy who was given up for adoption at age 5 by his birth mother because she was a single mother and the man she was going to marry refused to raise another man’s child. My dad’s cousin has been grateful his entire life that his adoptive parents chose him and has never had any interest in finding his birth family.

I had to stop seeing my mother for awhile because she let my 7 year old daughter get hurt while babysitting. We had to go to the Emergency Room because her ankle was sprained. Grandma was drunk at 9:30 AM. I had to protect my kids too. Forgiving someone does NOT mean allowing another person to continue to do what is wrong. It can help heal one's own self WITHOUT letting abuse happen again. Stay safe!

I wholeheartedly support not posting pictures or video of what happened to the child. But I think it’s completely fair to share it in person with any person who has a vested interest in seeing it (i.e. family and friends). However, I would make a post on all social media platforms that anyone who is not supporting your family with regards to this matter will be blocked from the family, and that includes in person contact with the adults and especially the children. This is a hill to die on. I hate that this child has been subjected to such abuse by someone who shouldn’t have been in the house but was allowed in by a trusted family member whose poor judge of character has caused permanent damage to a child.

Now I know I have the huge benefit of getting to look at the big picture and not just one life-moment at a time but, OP and his side focused on the wrong person overall. The step-mom was the crazy one and at that moment and in those moments, they need to focus on step-mom. But that's 1% of the time. 99% of the time they should have focused on the OP dad, who's job in this situation is the gatekeeper. Instead of having a last talk listing all of the past step-mom events, they should have done it much sooner and worked on the dad. By the time poor Luke got punched in the face, it was already late. The fact the OP dad failed in his job of protecting Luke from step-mom's violence, everyone including extended family should have come down on him right then and there. It's one thing for a crazy person to go crazy. It's quite another for you to open the door for the crazy person when you're supposed to be looking after kids and letting crazy person go crazy with no consequence. If OP and wife didn't come home at that time, maybe Luke would be permanently hurt or dead with OP dad saying, "don't cry Luke, she's just misunderstood". You had one job OP dad.

Too many people miss understand what it means to forgive… forgiveness sets you free. That being said, restoration of relationship is absolutely NOT a requirement for forgiveness. You did the right thing to press charges. There is never any excuse for CA and for the child's sake, trust issues and many other reason he needs to know that the adult that hurt him will not be allowed near him again, and that nothing in the situation is his fault but she was wrong. Its best she have no access to your home or any of your children as she would not only be at risk of abusing the child again if given the opportunity but given her apparent anger issues your children with his sister would also be prime targets as she obviously holds things against her and would probably try to hurt any child connected as a way to get revenge or assauge her anger. Its difficult that this probably will cone between you and your father as well as your children and their grandfather , and children benefit from grandparents as long as they are not abusive, but you also have to mske sure if you continue a relationship eith your dad, your stepmom wont put him in a position of allowing her near the children as apparently he cannot control her. She may due the worst and force your father to pick between her and you and your family. If she does this then the best thing to do is tell your dad you are sorry she us putting him in that situation but you love him and he is always welcome should he wish to visit but hope he understands that you have a responsibility to your children and she just cannot be allowed near the children. Leave things open with him for both your sakes as she is the type that will one day walk out of his life and he will modt certainly come to enjoy having his son, DiL and grandchildren in his life. Dont post your 'evidence' but dont destroy it. I would put it away in a safe deposit box, so no one can accidentally come across it. Their may come a time when someone may need to see it if she decides lets say, to claim you are lying and trying to cause trouble, especially if she sees its not posted and thinks you destroyed it and its then your word against others, or when Luke is older and needs to know for himself, or your other children need to know what you were protecting then from if she decides to sey thry were kept away unfairly or so on. In many ways its Luke who is the one who needs forgive them but that can only happen when he is old enough to understand and grasp it all and make his decision. The most important thing is that he knows that what happened was not something he caused or could have prevented or fixed and that all your children know that keeping them from their grandparents was because you have to protect them all equally and the lack of contact was not something anyone was to blame for except for your stepmom.

TL:DR - OP's step mom is crazy and smacks a 4 year old after he tells her he's going to be a ring bearer in the wedding alongside OP's son. My summary after listening to most of the video: OP has a stepmom who is very controlling and has planned every social gathering since she and OP's dad got together. OP's fiancée has custody of her half brother (4yo) because his parents died. Once they started planning the wedding, stepmom kept trying to insert herself into it and take over (contacting the wedding planner, showing up to dress appointments uninvited, etc). Fast forward to the main issue, OP and fiancée went out to spend time with her family, so OP's dad agreed to watch lil bro and their baby. They return from dinner and find both kids screaming and that stepmom smacked lil bro after he told her he was going to be a ring bearer. (She freaked out at this because she doesn't consider the 4yo to be family and that he shouldn't be part of the wedding). OP and his fiancée pressed charges. Then they eventually went no contact with his dad and stepmom, who now has a child abuse charge on her record. 🌟the end🌟
