In the rich history of the now-discarded Wild Card Game, it's easy to forget how disastrous the inaugural matchup was between the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals in 2012. Ugly defense, umpire catastrophes, and a cascade of empty beer bottles all over the field.

Braves fan here… I have absolutely tried to forget about this game. Even if it was considered a “right call”, the ump called it way too late. His arm doesn’t go up until the ball is close to landing.
@JD102790
@JD102790 4 сағат бұрын
That's the rule though, you can't call infield fly until it's absolutely clear an infielder can catch it with ordinary effort. The interpretation of that has been, "the player is camped under the ball" so he can't call infield fly until the infielder stops back-peddling
@Jacob_Ray
@Jacob_Ray 4 сағат бұрын
@@JD102790 so, even with that in mind, If he is still back peddling while the ball is descending I would not consider that ordinary effort, especially that deep into the outfield.

@@Jacob_RayI am an umpire, granted at the high school level, and I clearly think he could've caught the ball routinely had the left fielder not called him off. I 100% agree with it being called an infield fly. Umpiring isn't about making the easy call, it's about making the correct call. If you disagree, be mad at the rule, not the ump
@Jacob_Ray
@Jacob_Ray 4 сағат бұрын
I understand your thought process, and thanks for being willing to ump for the youth - it’s not for everyone! I guess my question then would be what is considered routine or ordinary effort? I agree the infielder could have caught it, but what I see in that video is a player still on the move to make the catch. The time between when he bails and the ball landing, to me, is not enough to be considered routine. Totally fine if that’s not how you see it, just my observation. *edit* I would also consider it a discrepancy to have to wait to make a call if it is indeed ordinary effort. Ordinary effort, again to me, is fairly straightforward and wouldn’t require waiting until the ball is close to landing.
@JD102790
@JD102790 3 сағат бұрын
@@Jacob_Ray I've always considered extraordinary effort as being in a sprint, leaving your feet, or making a play against the field boundaries. It is a subjective matter, which is of course is going to cause disputes when in a fringe situation. I do think level of play will make a difference too. We expect the pros to make more plays than kids do. In a high school game I've never seen a short stop be able to get that far into the outfield and camp under the ball like cardinals player did, so I might not have even had the chance to make that call.

Video idea. I just realized that Tyler O’Neill had 31 homers and only 61 RBI this season. That blows my mind and made me wonder if it was the record for most homers and least RBI, and then I thought, “a best power season with the least production by players sounds like a fun Jolly video” and here I am lol Love all the videos Jolly! Can’t wait for the next one!

I remember a Baseball Digest chart about it, least RBI for a player with 30 HRs. I think Curtis Granderson has the least, 30 HR and 59 RBI one year with the mets. I think he led off most of the year.

You're wrong as hell on this one, Jolly. If you understand the infield fly rule, then you know it was absolutely the correct call. I get why the casual fan, or those not familiar with the letter of the law would think this was the wrong call, but it wasn't. Yes, it DOES apply to infielders that have moved back into the outfield; nowhere does the rule stipulate that they must be within a certain distance of the infield dirt. Normal effort by an infielder with the appropriate bases occupied by runners is the only stipulation. Had Kozma not thought Holliday called him off, he would have caught the ball with normal effort. Infield fly. Period. Had this happened against the Cardinals, it would have been the right call. Just like the Obstruction call in Game Three of the 2013 World Series, this one might not be popular, but it's the correct call.

Yeah I'm cool with being questionable on it but jolly cake no where close to explaining the rule. Instead of just explaining the motive behind having it, Explain the actual rule from the rule book. Just another tough Braves playoff loss in a long stretch of brutal ones dating back to 91. This one stings worse than they gave up 10 runs in the first inning against the same Cardinals game in 2019. And to add salt to the wound, it's the last playoff game at Turner Field.

Even as a Cards fan, watching that game in real time, I thought that there was no way that was an infield fly. That call changed the entire momentum of the game. My guess is that Pete Kozma heard Matt Holliday behind him or realized that Holliday was close by. If not for Kozma's calling for the ball, I doubt Holbrook makes the infield fly call. Funny enough, the Cards later got lucky taking on the Nats in the NLDS. If not for Daniel Descalso and Kozma, they should have lost that series.

MLB, I haven't forgotten the awful infield fly rule. I'm biased because I'm a Braves fan. Something I read years ago on The Ringer I think would be a good idea for a video would be you could change anything about the season but you couldn't change who won the championship. Keeping it relevant to this video, the infield fly doesn't happen but the Braves lose the next round. San Francisco still wins the piece of metal.

Really was St Louis devil magic, a primary reason I still dislike St. Louis as a fan of an NL central team. It’s baffling to me that the umpire calls the infield fly rule as soon as Kozma retreats from catching the ball and sees it won’t be caught. Infield fly should be able to be called while the ball is still high up in the air and immediately be a dead ball, not be called only once the ball is missed. I think about this game often

To be fair the rule specifically doesn't say anything about the infield, and rather an infieldER. So theoretically, if a shortstop goes 40 feet into the outfield grass and sets up underneath the ball, then it can be called. I do NOT think that the umpire made the correct call. Kozma wasn't set up in time, and the umpire made a super late call. But the infield fly rule doesn't have to stay in the infield

Still think it was technically the right call, even if it wasn't really in the spirit of the rule. Because he obviously wasn't turning a double play in that situation. But the rule is that it should be called if an infielder can catch it with ordinary effort. Pete Kozma was camped under that ball, definitely ordinary effort.

I agree it wasn't in an infield fly, but you know the rule isn't limited by the infield boundaries. It can be called an infield fly if an infielder can reach the ball with normal effort. The SS was jogging to the ball so I think the ump saw that as normal effort and called it out. Do I agree with it? No, but I also think the braves fans are to blame for the delay bad call or not.
