I am german and the US assisted in creating a certain "set in stone"-mindset on this topic over here, so if you think you cant voice criticism about Israels actions as a state in the US, then try to do it here, after having decades of over the top guilt tripping pushed on people, who had nothing to do with it, cause they werent even born then. There is a huge difference between remembering and acknowledging our past and its darkness, and criticising a government and certain indiviudals for their inhumane actions today. Some of Israel's harshest critics are the Israeli left and other liberal Jews, even though Jews are a tiny minority in the world. Jon Stewart is a good example. I can name ten more influential Jews who you have likely heard of who are critical of Israel. I would be much prouder of Muslims that publicly and unequivocally condemn the genocidal Jihadi Hamas' use of their religion to justify killing of Jews, and want Hamas destroyed (leaving aside civilian toll). I would be proud of "my Muslim brothers and sisters" marching in the millions to condemn the widespread anti-Semitism that exists in Muslim communities, just like they march against Israel. I don't think he actually disagreed with the sentiment. Knowing the damage it causes to careers, and how smart he is... He might have just covertly agreed with it. If we look at this from a scientific point of view, which he would usually do, and I preface this by saying that I absolutely love my Jewish brothers and sisters, the demographics of an industry, a workplace, or a group, 100% affect how that group operates. Exactly! As a fellow Brit, I can dislike Israeli government, foreign policy and the way in which they treat Palestinians, whilst still having no issue with the Jewish people themselves. My grandfather helped to free a concentration camp in WWII - we were brought up to have respect for the Jewish people and what they went through. Calling them out for echoing swathes of the treatment they received (ghettos, extrajudicial killings, restriction of movement, removal of possessions, etc) does not make me, or my Jewish friends who echo the exact same sentiments, antisemitic. It didn't make the Labour party antisemitic, either (they can be called out on other behaviour, but not that). Israel is a Jewish country, but it is not the embodiment of Judaism. It is supposed to be a democracy, and treating it as some sort of untouchable theocracy that must never be questioned undermines the very principles of a democratic state.
