You know, I was never into the Jonas Brothers as I was never their demographic. But today when I saw they had a tiny desk I figured I would give them a fair shake like I do to everyone else on Tiny Desk. The first song was a pleasant surprise, the second shows how their voices are all a little different- which might be a recent development, but I appreciated it as their lives are very different and that showed through their voices, and the third was a nice fun journey showing how their voices work well together. This was a good concert, while it didn't evoke strong feelings in myself I do appreciate what the Jonas Brothers do, and will likely listen to more of them. Disclaimer: I was feeding my son breakfast when we listened to this, so my descriptions might be a little off

They actually have very different sounding voices and vocal techniques. Nick has a lighter, breathier, airier, and more nasally tone. He excels in the falsetto register. Joe has a fuller, more colorful chest voice and he excels at lower register singing and belting. He can do the high notes too, but his tone sounds very different from Nick. I honestly think Joe is a much more natural vocalist (it just comes easier to him). Nick sometimes sounds like he's struggling to stay on pitch. You can see that come through in their faces too.

This performance got me to check out the official videos for the new music from the Jonas Brothers. I don't understand how a music producer thinks that covering up this actual talent with overdubs and autotuning makes the music any better. I'll listen to this Tiny Desk recording a million times before inflicting the official studio release on my ears again. Please let one of the executives from the label hear these comments and then compare this performance to what they are trying to sell us. I will pay money for a stripped down performance like this highlighting a musician's talent over any technological wizardry they might apply in the studio. I also look forward to every new Tiny Desk performance exactly because it lets me see what the performer can really do.
