That's where I heard it, too. Love the original, but this update is perfect for this age -- my own and these bittersweet times. The song itself is a masterpiece that stands on its own.

I have such an appreciation for this version of the song - it’s so neat hearing it as she is older now compared to when she first recorded it… she has been able to look at both sides now- it’s just such a beautiful reflection of life - makes me sad and happy at the same time

I had never heard this later version until now. Always loved her original, but now that our years have passed, her current interpretation really exudes the experience of her life, more so than that of her 21-yo self.

I have always been in love with her...I will always be in love with her...from childhood dream to grown adult there is a vision we have, a vision we reach for; you are that dream for me...and you've exceeded any hope I ever had...the grace and beauty of your vision Ms. Mitchell still pulls at our hearts and brushes our souls...a million flower petals at your feet, with beautiful sunrises and sunsets to light your way...thank you, thank you for "carey" "paved paradise" "furry" and "hejira" and "both sides now..." we shake our heads and wonder how anyone as lovely as yourself could somehow grace this earth. And we smile...knowing we've had the chance to feel you in this world...your brightness lights our hearts.

I was born about 10yrs too late to appreciate the early work of the artists of Joni Mitchell's era. I remember this song as a youngster on the radio as a Judy Collins hit (and not liking it at all). Fast forward to 2003 and this version of the song appeared in a heartbreaking scene in the hit movie Love Actually as Emma Thompson discovers a Xmas gift her husband purchased wasn't intended for her, but another woman. This scene AND the song really got to me. Now as I listen to this recording with the hypnotic orchestral intro leading into the opening lines of the 1st verse I am overwhelmed with a sense of both the beauty of the song writing and arrangement, and a deep sense of sadness. This is a powerful piece of audio, and if you don't FEEL something when you listen to it, I gotta wonder if you're alive.

I heard this version for the first time during the wonderful sky ballet during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. A boy ran through the wheat and flew through the air. It was wonderful.

Great photos in video. Luv this encore recording, a smokier, deeper voice of a more-lived Joni 💗 ... think our 8th grade class choir sang this song for graduation in the 70's, a tad heavy! ; )

Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere Looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and they snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way that you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show And you leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions that I recall I really don't know love Really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud To say, "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way Oh, but now old friends they're acting strange And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all It's life's illusions that I recall I really don't know life I really don't know life at all

Like Sinatra singing "Last Night When We Were Young" in 1965. Not to be played in front of children, lest they get a peak into how we all start staring into the void at a certain point in our lives.

When I was young, I liked Judy Collins' version of this great song. It was a faster tempo, and Judy did a great job with it. I think this version by Joni is now my favorite - slower (like me).
@ramblinrose82 жыл бұрын
when I was young the very reason I didn't like Judy's version as much was because it was too fast...it seemed just tinged with a bit of bitterness to it, because the fast pace was a bit more forceful...I've always loved Joni's versions...just a difference in opinion...what we like is not right or wrong it just is what we prefer...glad you love the song regardless
