The NBA gives its MVP awards to players who meet certain criterias... but what if the MVP was just given to the best player? We're looking at who would win it in those cases from the 1980s.

The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

One thing you didn't mention for '87 is that MJ became the first out of only three players to ever record 200+ steals w/ 100+ blocks in a season. The league somehow forgot to include him in the All-Defensive Team, so he repeated the same feat in '88, making him the only one to do so and earning him the DPOY. He also reached a career peak of 259 stls & 131 blks that year.

The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I was to grow up as a basketball fan in Chicago in the '80's and 90's. These days, being in the old Chicago Stadium and United Center for playoffs with MJ feels almost as legendary as being at the battle of Troy and living to tell the tale.

Sadly, Lebron fans are discrediting Michael Jordan"s victories and achievements. They like to say that MJ only beat the Pistons and Lakers when they get older. But all of he Pistons"s best players were under 30. Magic was only 31 years old and he was the second best player in the Nba. James Worthy ( age 29 ). Lebron fans forget to mention that Prime Lebron James lost to a team whose best player was 38-years-old Tim Duncan. 2014 Nba Finals. Spurs: Tim Duncan ( age 38 ), Manu ( age 36 ), Kawhi ( age 22 ), Tony Parker ( age 32 ).

@@allanhouston6759 Facts. And if we are doing their best solo runs (2007 Lebron vs 1989 Jordan), you will see the BIG difference in competition and success. Jordan faced 50-win teams from the first round of 1989 up to the ECF 63-win Pistons where he took 2 games. Lebron on the other hand, faced 2 .500 (41-41) teams in the Wizards and the Nets before facing a 53-win Pistons team (who are a farcry from the Pistons that beat the Lakers in 2004 or the Pistons that Jordan faced in 1989). Jordan, alone, was the ONLY one who beat the pistons in that postseason (the Pistons 4-0 swept Magic). On the contrary, whenever Lebron faced a championship-bound team "alone" in 2007, he couldn't even take one game. Note that Jordan didn't have Phil Jackson or a Star Pippen, just decent (just-got-off-the-bench-rotation) Scottie Pippen. People always love to brag about lebron getting to the finals where he got badly swept (the WCF was the actual finals that year) but forget that Jordan turned the 1989 ECF into the Finals (as the 1989 Pistons 4-0 swept the Lakers). I'm not even going to go into the individual performance cause Lebron averaged 23ppg on 37FG%...

@@allanhouston6759 Don't disrespect the Spurs like that. That 2014 team was legendary. Even in 2015-16, the next year... those old guys set the NBA record in the regular season for best home record in a season, they went 40-1 at home. And 67-15 which is tied for the 7th best record of all time. AND THEY WERE A YEAR OLDER. They only got overshadowed because GSW went 73-9. But they are one of the greatest teams in NBA history.

@@Flyhr Check your facts. 2015/16 Spurs: It was a completely diffrent team. Kawhi Leonard has matured and won a DPOY award in 2016. It was the team of Kawhi Leonard and the new team player Lamarcus Aldridge. Old Tim Duncan and old Manu barely played. Tim Duncan ( age 40 ) = 9-ppg FG-49%. Tony Parker ( age 34 ) = 12-ppg FG-49% Manu ( age 38 ) = 10-ppg FG-45%

I mean mj definitely was not mvp, definition of a ball hog volume shooter which hurts his team, he shot 12.2 more times than magic and had a 15% higher usage rate 38% all time high to 23% and Magic was a facilitator. There is a reason they were barely better as a team than when he missed the full year. They were below 500 and only made the playoffs because 8 out 11 teams in the east that year made the playoffs, they were the 8th seed and 5th out of 6 teams in their division, 25 less wins than the lakers, 19 worse than the celtics. And because of his ballhogging at that point in his career they were the 3rd worst scoring team, they scored 4 more points a game the year he played 6 games. Its the best boxline that was not actually indicative of performance in league history.

@harold mccoy From 81 through 87, Bird was the best player in the NBA, and it wasn't close. After that, Jordan was the best, and it wasn't close. The 80s and 90s there was never a question who was the best. Picking teams, only a moron (or a racist) wouldn't pick Bird first during the 80s.

@@roxydejaneiro5640 Racist Really? C'mon you can't say that everyone who has a differing opinion from yours is a racist since this is your opinion and not a fact because it is subjective. Jordan in the 80s scored more than Bird and was considered a better defender than Bird. Kareem was a dominant figure in the 80s as well even if he was declining. I like Larry and I think people just sweep him under the carpet whenever they are talking about GOAT NBA Players. That being said, I still won't go as far as saying anyone who disagrees with me is a racist. Chill out with the 'my POV is the right answer and everyone else is wrong' take.
