I think this genre should be called "Oppression Fantasy". They're literally fantasizing being oppressed by cartoonish villains so they can imagine what they would do in that situation.

The problem with this show is that it glorifies hood culture as something that unites people, as opposed to reality where living in the hood mean you are constantly exposed to crime, poverty and have no opportunity, whilst the counter argument is portrayed as clownish and abjectly evil. We have: Two crime ridden, high unemployment towerblocks that are rundown. The characters warn each other about the danger of living there and the fact they have no future prospects whatsoever of employment, education or business. To the point where the main character is considering moving away to actually make something of her life which her deadbeat mom absolutely refuses to allow. Yet: Each and every time they say how tightknit the community is (you know the community where it isn't safe to go outside at night, super tight) and how much dignity they have and how their entire identity is tied up in living in those towers. We have: A property developer who is offering insane above market rates for rundown apartments in the towerblocks so that he can revitalize the area, attract companies that will want living space for their workers, reduce crime so it's a safe place to live and his most heinous crime of all, get all the deadbeats to move out of the towers and get new bigger homes somewhere else. Yet: Each and every time he makes an offer it is rejected by deadbeat mom (did I mention she had 2 kids from 2 different men) as if she is queen towerblock! Are you telling me not a single person took the money to move out and not only get a better home.... but move away from crime, poverty and towards a better future?! The shows asks us to sympathize with the objective villains of the story, the Hood, whilst making such ludicrous caricatures of the villains, by necessity of requiring contrast between their actions and the actions of the Hood, that there is no way the viewer can believe this is taking place in reality. This is a show made by a person who forgot that as a millionaire he moved out of the hood and is nostalgic for how he perceived growing up in it. Forgetting all the times his bike got stolen.

One of the things that bothered me most was right after Mom said that if the daughter left she wouldn't be able to afford rent she bitches about dad being a couchsurfer. Without her daughter she'd be a couch surfer too. And maybe if he had a daughter to leech off of he'd have a section 8 taxpayer funded apartment 2! She acts like she's better than him when she's not. She just has a vagina. I also love how he claims that he's been in the prison system. If he had and what we see is what he got I have no idea how they caught him. Because the police officers he wrote are so stupid they couldn't catch a cold.

I am reading "The Adventures of Robin Hood" right now, and enjoying it immensely. Robin was a Saxon nobleman who was stripped of his nobility and declared outlaw for opposing the usurpation of Richard's throne by Prince John while Richard was on Crusade. John's rise to power is accompanied by oppression of commoners, unjust laws, unfair taxation, and turning a blind eye to corruption by officials and clergy who supported him or paid him off. John Prince is a ruthless businessman, true, but apparently he's worked very hard to build his corporate empire. He employs the residents of Sherwood and Forest, and funds children's hospitals. He wants to revitalize the center of the city he calls home, and he's willing to help the residents of the area relocate to more affordable housing. I'm not seeing much of a parallel between John Prince and Prince John. We're TOLD John Prince "uses the police" to remove opposition, but they have yet to actually show the Police doing anything of the sort. Robyn's mother was trespassing and part of an unlawful assembly who were resisting arrest. True the Cop probably should not have pulled his firearm but apparently the crowd made him nervous. John Prince did NOT target anyone at that time - he just wanted the trespassers out of his building. These people have no clue how to write a villain OR a hero....

Yes. You can do pretty much whatever you want with your own property. Someone could, in theory, purchase the Mona Lisa and then spray paint all over it. They would be considered a cultural vandal, and denounced from every corner of the globe, but they wouldn't be breaking any law. I don't think there's any point in the show where John Prince behaves in an illegal, or even particularly immoral, way. As Jonny points out, he even funds a children's hospital. He's a pretty good person, and a far better person than the violent thugs that make up Robyn Hood's gang.

@@bulldogsbob Well, it certainly depends on what criteria you're measuring by. My parents loved Lord of the Rings, my grandfather read The Hobbit and LOTR to my mom in the early 70s, she ended up naming me after Lord of the Rings. Fast forward to having seen the fandoms and franchises of other fans having been systemically destroyed, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, and then they were coming for my franchise, Lord of the Rings. I saw the promotional material, the diversifying of it, which was extremely offensive to me. Luckily the show was bizarrely bad that it wielded no power over anything, and the fandom of Lord of the Rings proved much stronger than even that of Star Trek. Lord of the Rings is the franchise that survived, however by the criteria of the bastardization that strays furthest from the quality of the original of which it is based, Rings of Power is the worst TV-show of all time based on how it is the lowest thing, drawing on the very highest excellence. As for Velma, by the criteria of which show is the most explicitly diversely racist, it certainly hammers its perceived enemies in the most overt way. Over the top of down with the patriarchy and down with white people and down with white privilege type bullshit, it's not just implying it like most of the rest of the crap shows, it goes on and tells you outright!

Aw man, when the mother actuall says, "i cant feel mah leggz!!!1" the bedtime story scene from Major Payne springs instantly to mind. That clip right there would've been brutal. Edit: Just a word, too, destroying someone's car & slashing their tires wouldn't be vandalism, but more along the lines of malicious destruction of (private) property. You're completely right in your critique. These idiots are legitimately morally insane. 26:12 The shop class bomb thing is an allusion to The Clock Kid who was arrested for bringing a suspected bomb to a US school. It was a homemade clock. A backwards counting homemade clock. That looked amazingly like a IED out of a TV cop show (images of it aren’t hard to find). His father is a Sudanese politician who has repeatedly ran for president of Sudan and was an outspoken Muslim advocate at the time. As a former teacher, what he made was indistinguishable from the kinds of bombs and fake bombs kids make to terrorize other students and teachers.

I think people have forgotten that the original story or Robin Hood-- well, maybe not 'Original', but the canonized version at least-- wasn't about the poor vs the rich, but about fighting against oppression, corruption, and injustice. If memory serves, there are many versions of Robin Hood were he was actually seen as a loyal ally of the king who was fighting against the corruption that was taking root while said king was away.

Robyn Hood is how a woke work can fail especially if it's extremely unsubtle and preachy about it's message: The race and gender-swapped lead, the negative portrayals of police, the barrage of partisan politics, and harmful stereotypes of straight white people. It also doesn't help that the writing is poor which turns off even people that might actually like the series. Some or all aspects of Robyn Hood also extend to HBO's Santa, Inc and Velma, which are also negatively received. Conversely, some woke works can succeed if the writing is good and they aren't too hyper-preachy. For instance, The Boys (2019) didn't show much in the way of wokeness as it's satire was targeted specifically at celebrity culture, corporate corruption, and cinematic universes using superheroes as a metaphor. Only from the second season onward did these elements start to become more and more prominent. More importantly, it's writing was good enough to be entertaining at least in the first season. That is the difference between Robyn Hood and The Boys.

Did they have the entire season filmed when episode 1 aired? If you look at how comically evil the "bad guys" are in episodes 7 and 8, it's as though the director/writer realized the "good guys" and "bad guys" were flipped after so many people criticized that part of the show, so the only way out was to make the "bad guys" jarringly and absurdly evil while leaving the "good guys" with the same self-righteous and immoral behavior.

I think one of the things about this show that makes me sweat a little bit is that I'm currently writing a comic that touches on similar issues of a rich family buying real-estate in a rebellious area in order to help young families and university students get a home. I even have a masked character who makes music that the rebellious area uses as sort of a mascot for their protest against the rich family and the municipality. Haha. Dear lord. I guess the big difference is that my story is trying to talk about the concept of change and expectations and how violating change feels even if it is for the better. But yeah there was definitely a moment where I was sweating a little bit, because I have put my all into this project seeing how bad this show is made me reconsider for a few seconds if I'm being stupid marking a story about a housing crisis lol.
@simonwahlen7150
@simonwahlen7150 6 ай бұрын
Nah I think you shouldn't worry about this show. This show glorifies staying in the crabbucket of a bad situation and keeping others there and then demanding of other or taking resourses. Robyn early tries to get a job and move out something her mother goes against because she wants her family to stay in the slum of an apartment project building. In real life apparently people celebrated the project micro appartment buildings in cities being torn down because it meant that there where now enough nicer buildings that people who where poor didn't have to settle for living packed like sardines. The thing you have to worry about and think hard about is the fact that making a generational change and getting people as a group to better themselves without forcing them like a tyrant is really hard. It's why a lot of developing countries struggle with stuff like getting a democracy with rule of law, because nobody can do it for them others can try and tell them how to do it but they need to want have it, understand it and fight for it themselves. So it might be really hard to write a "happy ending" where you solve the conflict since there really isn't a good broadly available formula in the realworld. But if you want to give it a shot or is going for a less outright "happy ending" and instead go for a "hopefull, change is hard but it gets better ending" or maybe not fixing society but helping the main characters grow and leave it with a cliffhanger of them still fighting to help their community get better but trying a new way. I don't know how you want your story to go but as one internet stranger to another go for it. Even if it doesn't go as well as you hoped for it will still be writing experience for future tries and stories. The more you try the better you become.

It’s funny how the story of Robin Hood has been changed from the government over taxing the people to “uhh rich people bad” completely changing the og story

42:22 you are out here throwing out some of the deepest morals I've ever heard in my life "You've chiseled it with such clarity into the face of reality" like goddamn dude, can you write a show? Please?

Well, the show is the triumph of stupidity. Most shows since 2020 and generally 2022 onwards have forgotten how rational people acts.

Mostly because the people involved don't know how rational people act.

Or how to write good dialogue that doesn’t sound like the writer standing on a soapbox, generally know how to do tone except for what they see in MCU or GoT and how to light their sets properly.

"Let me pay to relocate you and your entire family and friends to better quality of life, you win, and i dont look so bad" I guess the worst thing out villain has done is imply that he would rather relocate them out of his own pocket, rather than lawfully remove squatters to preserve his own public image. Sounds like a good deal to me

So that's why the most variably named Director is in Canada: hoping he won't have Elon Musk trying to subsume him.

Wasn’t the phone the “bad guy” destroys a phone he bought for the lawyer, his goddaughter? So it wasn’t a crime because it was his phone. The “villain” of the show is actually the best character lol.

Yeah, it sucks. I could only handle about 15 mins of the first episode. In all fairness though, X-Files and The Expanse were also shot in Canada and they were great.

Yeah, but "shot in Canada" does not mean it was a Canadian production. Wasn't at least X-Files a US production?

Hells bells you have the most devastatingly fantastic accent on this platform. Is there a location associated with your accent? Its fantastic. Also costume changes need to become a constant thing on the channel. Bravo sir, bravo!

U.S. Army guy here. We do not train with sticks whatsoever, and I'm offended that this show thinks that we would use such sissy weapons. We obviously train to use guns as the sticks that they shamlessly depict us to use.

21:55 Filming yourself in the middle of a crime is a godsend to investigators. It's what brought in the Philadelphia looters, the January 6th rioters, and so many other groups of criminals.

The rising prices thing is more realistic than you would think. If there is a noted 'increase in rate of crime' in certain areas, stores could end up with increased prices in order to cover the extra cost of either insurance on their products incase it gets stolen, or to cover increased cost of new security measures that need to be implemented due to the increased crime rate.
