I have been living in Thailand for 6 years now and have previously worked here. I want to raise one issue regarding private hospitals, which I had to deal with when I worked here. If you go to a private hospital you have to take into account that if the disease or condition is too risky for the hospital to treat, they will not accept you and refer you to a government hospital. In case you end up there in an emergency, the hospital is obliged to stabilize your condition before they can transfer you to a government hospital. The reason for this is that they are commercial enterprises and thus have to optimize their income. So it is good if you living here (or are a tourist) to be aware of this and inform yourself of the possibilities (e.g. extensive heart surgery, trauma surgery, etc).

Thailand's romanization started more than 100 years ago during King Rama VI who was educated in English boarding school for several years when he was till a prince. The system was later standardized by Royal Society of Thailand and all official road signs/places adopt this system. Roman alphabets are not confined only to English/American languages. Almost all European languages adopt Roman alphabets as their main writing system except Greece and Russia. Some non-European countries also do likewise including Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Even though most non-European countries have their own native writing system, they still adopt romanization to help foreigners recognize and pronounce road/place names including Thailand, China (pinyin) and Japan (romaji). Westerners or those who learn English as a second language must accept the fact that those romanized words are not necessarily pronounced like English/American common pronunciation. It is easy to adapt once you know how the native pronounce it. In Thailand, "PH" is pronounced aspirated P (people) and the most well-known is "Phuket" while "P" is pronounced non-aspirated P (papa). "KH" is pronounced like "King" such as "Ramkhamhaeng" while "K" is pronounced like "Gong" such as "Krungthep". "TH" is pronounced aspirated T such as "Take" and the most well-known is "Thai" while T is pronounced non-aspirated T such as "one ton". "CH" is pronounced as "J" (jar) such as Chatuchak. It can also be pronounced as "CH" (chat) such as Chang beer.

That is a good video. A comment about prices: Western products (food and goods) are generally cheaper than Canada and only slightly cheaper than the US. For example, coffee is expensive in Thailand. But, Thai food, of course, is a bargain. Rent may, or may not, be cheap depending on your choices. Health care can be expensive for an older person (like me) but packages are available. Dental care is MUCH cheaper than Canada and the US. I live in Thailand for part of the year. With green fees, sailing and entertainment, I don't save a lot of money here; however, I choose to be here for the lifestyle. Of course, the various styles of massage (etc.) are a LOT cheaper in Thailand.

In my opinion it isn't cheap any more, especially in high season. About 4300 Baht greenfee + Caddyfee 350 +tip for the caddy (400) +Cart 700 + taxi + expences for drinks and eating. You can't manage it with the money mentioned in the video. Moreover sometimes the course is very overcrowded (they have about 400 caddys) by big groups may be Koreans and others. The course is fine, but not for playing regularly.....

I stayed in Phuket for about a month back in 2012. I was seriously (and still am) considering relocating and so spent my time differently than as if on holiday. I looked at property and also spent time in the supermarkets etc. My biggest takeaway was that I would have to, and could quite easily, just change what I ate and drank, based on what was available in this different part of the world. Lets face it, I don't eat tuna steak here at home, because it has to travel some considerable way, and costs per kg, more than chicken or pork, and similar observations can be made in Thailand. Off the menu, would be red wine, cheese, which are expensive, but things like chicken and fish and vegetables etc, are far cheaper. Here in the UK something like fresh salmon or cod, you'd be looking at about £18 to £25 per kg. I saw red snapper fillets at just a few pounds per kg. Likewise chicken breast might be £6 or £7 per kg at least, but as Jonny shows, it is just £1.45 per kg. I certainly had no doubt that I would be eating and drinking differently, but in my mind, living like a king compared to back home, and likely saving a lot of money at the same time, and that was before the bonkers price increases in the last year or so.

For expats, Bangrunrad and Bangkok Hospitals provide excellent services at international level standard but less cost compared to ones in America, England and Australia. There is no need for prior appointment to see the specialist, just walk in. BTW, it's no longer Tesco-Lotus, just Lotus as Tesco sold all its stake to CP Group about 5 years ago. Originally, CP Group established hypermart Lotus about 3 decades ago and faced financial difficult during Tom Yam Kung meltdown in 1997 and sold majority stake to Tesco. So the brand was renamed Tesco-Lotus. Then about 5 years ago, Tesco faced financial difficulty so it decided to sell its stake back to CP Group and thus CP rebranded back to only Lotus. I think you still got used to the old name Tesco-Lotus as it was very common for 2 decades. However, even when it was Tesco-Lotus, Thais would still call it simply Lotus. Thais have the habit of shortening place name.

Haa! HH is a grrreat place to settle. I just hit 50 and already planning my ”golden years”. And yes, my money goes further in HH than in my native Finland. Also the climate is very very smoothing to my already aching joints… no - not those kinds of joints! 😃 I am hitting HH for a second time this year in December and once again I have a new base for my holiday operations - closer to the beach which is already calling my name! I also love the food scene in HH - wide and brilliant when it comes to variety. You certainly can find almost everything there… my efforts to find a wife have so far gone astray but hey… I have time to search! 😅

Tracy and Ray spends on average $2,200 a month living in a nice place like that? I retired early, left my W2 job last year, and currently looking at overseas places to live for a bit. I have around $10K passive income. I guess I'll be okay in Hua Hin.

If you're 60+ and want the retirement visa, the health insurance requirement is quite expensive and climbs in price every birthday. And I don't think it covers pre-existing conditions either.

About 30+ years ago my Thai friend said he was in some small southern Thailand beach town when he met a retired American guy from PA. The oldster spent 6 mo. a year there and non-winter 6 months back in the states. He lived a comfortable life on very little. Nice part was he had a young mama-San living with him. What am I doing in the US? Lol

If you want hassle and bustles of Bangkok, it only takes three and half hours by car/train from Hiahin. Beaches and mountains are near by Huahin. If you don't like innundating Westerners, you can go to Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Kan, Petchaburi for more rural Thai living. It's always helpful to speak some Thai. This way, you can interact with the locals. Life in Hiahin is great, if you like swimming, eating, and doing your own things. I know you can do it in other places, too.

Hua Hin is awesome but the beach there sucks. It’s covered in crabs and weird blue/silver mosquitoes patrol the water. Never seen those kids of mosquitos and didn’t even know they stay on sea water, but they ruined it for us each time we got in the water. Spent a month there and ended up swimming in the pool most of the time. Therefore, you could stay anywhere else in Thailand with a pool. All you’d miss is a walk on the beach.

Johnny, great video! but that train at the start will not take you to Bangkok. It was heading south 😂 Also I don’t want to come over as a smart ass, but …. 03:08 you are at Market Village. Village Market is a supermarket along the road at Monsoon Valley wine bar area. I lived in Spain for almost 18 years. Hua Hin is better.

@jonnyasia6 ай бұрын
Hi John, my apologies for missing your last message regarding visa. There are many KZbin videos covering this topic; it just depends on what visa you are looking for. For yourself, I am guessing retirement. I actually did a part 2 of this video covering visas, etc. If you go to timestamp 00:06:02, you will get more information regarding visa agents, etc. Please find attached link [kzbin.info/www/bejne/nom8YohjfJVsadEsi=7JmP8QJvHnbgCqkQ]. Thank you very much for watching, and I hope all is well and good in Tweed Heads. Regards Jonny

I guess Pattaya does not make the list since its a bit slizzy, its still one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Pattaya is getting more expensive these days compared to 10 years back. Hua Hin is a lovely place I visited 20 years back and had a great time, I plan to visit when I come to Thailand on my next trip. Great video

@@jonnyasia They used to have a catamaran from Pattaya to Hua Hin several times per day, I think they have cancelled it when I visited in March this year, hopefully they bring it back, its a better way to get there rather then on road.

A retiree who receives Social Security benefits, a State of Florida benefits , and other taxable income needs to know when moving to another country what taxes he would have to pay to the new country of residence in addition to the US taxes he is still required to pay to the USA, whether in the US or residing outside the US. If he has to pay full taxes to both the new and old countries, that could erase some or all of the lower costs of living in the new country. What information can Forbes give me about this problem?
@willsmith3911 ай бұрын
That new Bangkok to Hua Hin high speed train is going to make a MASSIVE difference to Hua Hin. Good and bad potentially. At the moment getting there is a pretty knackering taxi ride, a really uncomfortable old school train that shakes you to pieces and takes almost 5 hours or a flight where you spend longer getting to a from airport and all usual airport hassles. A 2 hour comfortable modern train puts hua hin very much in easy reach BUT means tons more weekend break tourists from Bangkok. Will really help local economy but will likely make the place a lot less chilled
@kmichael185011 ай бұрын
I am guessing it will still be 2.5 - 3 hours on the train to be honest. One other benefit coming is the elevated highway construction out of Bangkok towards Hua Hin is estimated to make the drive 25-30% faster than it is currently, and should be done by 2025. So that's very promising and should make the drive down much easier.
@willsmith3911 ай бұрын

Hey Jonny, My husband and I spend 3 months every winter January-April in Thailand, we are in English and young 50 somethings! We usually stay in Koh Samui or Phuket and fancy a change. We have been watching your channel and would love some advise with areas to rent in Hua Hin as we have never been before and plan to come out next year - 2025. We definitely like peace & quiet, a new villa with a pool and easy access by scooter to restaurants and the beach. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
